Rysheed Jordan

I was a bit critical of Coach Roberts but he should be remembered as a good and decent man who took over a broken men's basketball program at St.John's , tried his best, and left it a better program than he found it.

There is no need to kick Norm. Norm deserves the thanks of all St. John's fans for his efforts.

Revisionist, based largely on what Lavin did in year 1. Proof is that while each year there are a handful of programs that have a mess in terms of violations, illicit activity, etc, no one will be calling on NR to come in and clean it up as a HC. His theme song for his SJU experience is Fleetwood Mac's "Over my head"

My daughter has a friend from Philly who is friends with Rysheed's cousin. The cousin said that St. John's was a lick for a long time because he wanted to get out of Philly but didn't want to go too far. That being said, if Norm was still here, we would not have been that happy medium.

Seriously, can we stop with the "if norm was still here" nonsense!?!?... It's pretty OBVIOUS that coach Lav is a much better recruiter and better head coach than Norm... however, I appreciate the fact Roberts took over the program right after Jarvis basically DESTROYED it... he tried his best, CLEANED up the mess, brought in mostly HIGH character kids... but just couldn't get that break-through recruit OR have a break-out 20-25 win season...I thank him throwing out the garbage and trying his best... God Bless Ya, Norm!!... That being said, I am glad he is LONG gone!!..lol.... Long, Live... LAV!!!

Mr. Glass I was the one who raised the issue of " If Norm was Coach" to refute Joe's statement that the bright lights of NYC attracted Rysheed to Queens. I tried to explain to him that NYC had nothing to do with him coming to Queens but rather our great staff and their ability to put kids in the Pros. That is why we are now getting top talent to Queens. In Coach Lavin I trust.
As for the rest of your post I agree with every word.

Totally agree Lavin and Co. had a lot to do with it. But you can't say the NYC location had absolutely nothing to do with it. He posted pictures of MSG, visited NYC, and even added comments like "the bright lights". Also, the mere location being only 80-90 miles from Philly also helped a lot because he said he wanted to stay close but not too close. That helped put us in prime position. If I had to guess I'd say it was 70% Lavin and Co. with 30% NYC stage/location.

NR did not hire himself.

The reality is that someone with head coaching experience should have been hired to clean up the Jarvis mess. NR had no previous D1 head coaching experience.

Blame rests with the individual that hired Norm and stubbornly retained him for the performance of the St.John's basketball program during the NR era. NR was put into a situation he should never been put in.

Yeah, he was in over his head, but the fault lies with Fr. Harrington and his phantom committee who didn't have the guts/foresight to set their standards higher. Norm took his dream job, did his best and restored dignity to the program. There's no need to continue the attacks. And this is from somebody who was calling out Norm earlier than most others to the point of a threatened ban.

You guys are right on. with Norm. Was never a big Norm basher but was disappointed with abilities. . In the Corp world your boss hires someone who can not perform at the level expected, he receives .warnings and eventually is let go Agree responsibility was with those who hired him. Their judgment is at fault . Where is their accountabilty

I will agree with everything you said. FH is to blame for his hire and retention. But still I wont be thanking him for cleaning up the program, or leaving it in a better state than he found it. He is inept as a head coach, couldn't recruit big time talent, and nearly relegated us to permanent second class citizen status.

I do not ever bring up NRs name out of the blue to bash him. But I also will respond to anyone who thinks that we should be thanking NR for restoring our program. NR couldn't bake a cake if he had all the ingredients and the recipe. He just doesn't have what it takes to be a head coach. We all know that, so let's stop thanking him. It only would serve to feed his own ego that thinks he was actually the man behind the turnaround in 2011

Norm was a nice guy. Tried the best he could. Should never have been a high major head coach. I don't like bashing him, but I am glad hes gone and replaced by Lavin.

Should Joe Torre never have been a major league manager based on the performance of his Mets team? Bottom line is the bottom line but people do learn and grow. I have noted in other threads that it always seemed to me that Lavin's UCLA teams were less than the sum of their parts. We will see if that has changed with this years STJ team.

First of all, I said he restored dignity to the program, not restored it totally. Secondly, as far as Norm's ego is concerned he just took credit for recruiting the players that Lavin had success with his first year. It's no different from Fran taking credit for jarvis' success his first year, or any other coach in similar circumstances, it's just human nature.

Remove the word "could", Rysheed is the missing piece for our team and he will start from day one. Hoops Weiess told me last year that Rysheed was the best PG in the country. I was a little skeptical because he was scoring so much. However I had the opportunity to watch him in open runs playing with the team as well as Mo Harkless, Justin Burrell, and Paris Horne.
Rysheed has incredible court vision, he can make any pass. He does not try to dribble the ball upcourt if there is someone in a better position ahead of him. One game he had Gift on his team and he made Gift look like a world beater getting the ball to him where he was most effective. Players were constantly running because they knew he would get them the ball.
The most important thing is that players love playing with him. D'Angelo was on his team for a few games and was constantly smiling at the plays Rysheed was making by passing the ball.
Another game he was on Paris and did not back down at all defensively.
Due to what I have seen so far, I am anxiously awaiting the start of the season.

Thanks for the quick review! I think I speak for all of us when I say we need more mini scouting reports from people in the know who have seen him play with the team. Very exciting, let's really hope he is the final puzzle piece to a sweet 16 run or dare I say even beyond.

Orlando was just cleared to play last week and I did not get a chance to see him. Hope to see him play this week. Will give a report as soon as I do.
