Rysheed Jordan Release
IMO the most significant thing that he can do is get the hell away from the people he used to hang out with. Easier said then done since some are likely family. Then, get counseling(he probably is already), stay clean, work on physical health/basketball skills and land a job (likely overseas). There are other things he can do to turn his life around, but I hope he starts by surrounding himself with positive influences. I wish him the best.
I agree. Best thing he could do is get out of Philadelphia.

It seems like a million years ago, but I think that was was part of the reason he chose St Johns. It was a chance to get away from home but sadly, it seems NYC wasn't far enough away. I recall him going back there for days at a time during the season, missing game(s), getting suspended, etc. I think there were stories about his mom being ill at the time, but based on how things played out that likely wasn't the only reason he kept going home.

I sincerely hope he gets his life turned around but in hindsight, he'd have been far better off going to UCLA or some other program where he couldn't drive home whenever he felt like it.

He is scary talented, one of the saddest stories we’ve had, but just imagine if it could be turned around with our help.
You serious?
Please tell me you aren't.
You don’t believe in second chances?
For someone who attempted to murder someone getting a 2nd chance on a college basketball team?????????
Lets get real.
I don’t believe he was actually convicted on attempted murder. And we need a point guard.
Hey, my bar is lower than yours, what can I say.
Your bar is quite a bit lower that's for sure. I have nothing against second chances in life. But putting someone who attempted murder on someone back onto a college basketball team ranks up there as a pretty ludicrous take. Because we need a point guard.............

That being said I just looked and saw nothing online about whether or not he was convicted or not. I do know he served 3 years in prison. No mentions of how his trial turned out. Got a feeling if he was innocent a bigger story would be out there being he served 3 years.

Good luck turning his life around. Thankfully he exhausted his eligibility by turning pro because I definitely wouldn't want to hear any more chatter about him going back to college hoops.
I can't find anything either. But I thought when the incident initially happened, he was facing much longer than 3 years in jail. Wonder what happened.
Seems that his trial was postponed a bunch of times due to changes in his legal representation. Maybe they cut a deal since he appears to have missed out on his right to a speedy trial.
Father Rock kept in touch with Rysheed throughout this ordeal. Will keep the young man in Prayer and hope that he uses this as a Learning Experience. Wishing him the best as he attempts to put this chapter of his life behind him.
By the way, today is Fr. Rock's Birthday

I know this is a long shot but I would hope he try and get his degree. I know he’s a felon but at least it would give him a sense of accomplishment. I was just reading about NYU prison to degree program and those redemption stories are great to read.

During his time at SJU, his aunt was murdered, his best friend was murdered, his mother fell ill and Rysheed, as the oldest of something like 7 or 8 kids, had to play the father role, since there was no father In the picture. And all of this happened when was 19, 20 years old.

Did he screw up in a big way? Yes. Has he paid a big price? Yes.

He deserves a second chance and I hope he gets it.

He already has, he is now a free man and what happens with the rest of his life is up to him; just like it was before.

Lifes a bitch sometimes, but that's no excuse for attempted murder.
He's a felon, so what kind of job is he going to get? $10hr?

He had the talent, went to a B.E. school, he should have stayed in Queens, played every damn game, got better every game, maybe get drafted. Get those funds rolling in, buy a house and get the hell away from THUG LIFE.

It's a real shame that he choose "THUG LIFE" over a "LEGIT LIFE", but oh well, it was his choice.
Now he gotta deal with the consequences of being a felon.

He still HAS talent. He’ll need to work real hard to hone that talent enough to earn a living playing ball, but that’s his best shot at getting out of Philly and of making a nice career for himself. . It’s all on him at this point, he’s not a kid anymore. We’ll soon find out how badly he wants it.

I'd think it would be a very hard sell for an overseas team to give him a shot.

Not a lawyer but if he was convicted of a felony can he even be allowed to enter certain countries.

Plus, how could he leave the country if he's on parole? If he can, would a team even want someone who tried taking another man's life? They have to be pretty desperate.

I'm guessing they set up a program for him before he even got out.
Maybe he could be a guidance counselor for troubled youth when he gets off parole?

He has four years of rust on him, and he tried to kill someone. There might be some other ways for him to make money using his basketball talent, but I don't think he's ever making money by playing in an organized league.

He was not convicted of attempted murder.
We all have our opinions but can we just get our facts straight before tossing our terms like “he tried to kill someone.”

He was in fact charged with attempted murder and did shoot someone. I wish Rysheed the best and hope he turns his life around, but make no mistake he was charged with a very serious crime.

The fact is he shot at someone, pretty sure that qualifies in the court of common sense. You are splitting hairs and it is coming off as ridiculous.

There are a lot of unknowns with regard to Rasheed's release.

- Moose is correct that a criminal conviction can be a bar to entry to another country. One or more of the Providences in Canada prevent entry of US residents with DWI convictions. It is likely that many, most or all of the European countries where Americans play basketball have restrictions for entry for those with serious criminal convictions thereby complicating his playing overseas..

- what was Rysheed convicted of ? I "googled" for information regarding that question without success. News reports after his arrest indicated that he was charged with attempted murder, robbery, criminal conspiracy and simple assault, among others. Because he was held in jail for 3 !/2 years there had to have been a final adjudication of his charges. It is likely that Rysheed plead guilty to a single lesser charge (perhaps robbery) and was sentenced to something like 5 - 7 years jail which with good behavior (and perhaps Parole) allowed him to be released after 3 1/2 years.

- Is Rysheed on parole ? Not sure anyone on this board knows at this point in time but it's a good chance he is. If he is on Parole then (assuming Pennsylvania law is consistent with others) prior to release he would have been required to submit a plan for his after release (i.e.. where he will live, work, etc.) and will be required to report to his Parole Officer for supervision who will monitor and can restrict his travel. I would not be surprised if Fr. Rock played a party in putting together Jordan's "after release plan" which would have included a plan for employment.

Thanks for the legal analysis Otis. If not playing ball, I can certainly see him working as a youth counselor/coach if he’s willing to do that. Talking to youngsters about potential pitfalls, etc. Mere speculation and wishful thinking on my part.
