Frank McGuire left SJU because of the 1951 college betting scandals. NYC BB and MSG took a tremendous hit.
I had a cousin who had cerebral palsy whose family moved to Nassau County in 1950 so he could attend what was then one of the best schools in the country at that time for children with cerebral palsy.
Also the air in Queens, Nassau County and Westchester in 1952 was prestine.
I don't blame McGuire for taking advantage of the opportunity but he wasn't totally honest about his reason.

2. Balamou is not on the bench because of an "eye infection". Which is now being called an "ankle problem".

Ummmm no... That's bullshit..he just sprained his ankle a couple of days ago... Stop trying to make shit up. First hand info that he sprained his ankle and is trying to get it ready for Friday by getting treatment on it 3 times a day.

Dude first off you don't know me from a whole in the wall, so don't go calling part of my post "bullshit". Second there's so much shit going on that I don't need to "make shit up". It was reported that it was an eye infection, if that was incorrect so be it. But lets assume for a second that you're report isn't bullshit, please explain how an ankle injury would have prevented him from being on the bench to support his teammates?

Do we know for sure that Jones won't be available for his rebounding prowess, that Lavin can't insert Stewart for his dead eye shooting that he showed earlier in the season and Lipscomb can't sit on the bench and twittle his thumbs?

Inquiring minds want to know.

At the risk of butting in and speaking for Raw Dog, who can speak for himself very well, I'll take a crack.

I understood Raw Dog's point to be that Balamou just recently injured his ankle. I don't think he meant to suggest that the ankle had anything to do with Balamou not being on the bench for the Big East tournament.

I agree that there is a lot of strange stuff going on, but I'll take Raw Dog at his word. It's posters like Raw Dog who have inside info that make me go on this site. The rest of the back and forth crap I could pass on.

Beat SDSU!

I will take a shot:

From what i am told the three suspensions are not marijuana related, but for a different infraction.

This is just another example of the inmates running the asylum at SJU and why the coach needs to go.

Winning is great. I am happy the seniors are finally playing in the NCAAs. But the culture of the program stinks from the head down. I believe at SJU we can win and we can do it the right way with kids who will represent the school in a positive way and not embarrass us.

This is why i havent gotten on Lavin for not landing Briscoe - he is a major talent but we would have sold our soul to get him - and the way he made "the announcement" into such an event, can you only imagine what he would try to pull here? No player is bigger than the program and we dont need that here. We can win but more importantly we can win the right way.

The Lavin Era has destroyed the clean program Norm restored here. We can get on Norm for being a horrinle coach but at least he had dignity and he brought dignity back to SJU.

Lavin has recruited criminals, kids who were academic question marks who he still relied on to be major contributors to the program, there have been numerous suspensions (two years ago there was one that costed us an NCAA birth), the team has underachieved and we are looking at a major rebuild starting next week once we are bounced from the NCAAs because the recruiting has been less than stellar.

And this is why i have called for Lavins head all year.....he takes ZERO accountability as the program descends further and further down the toilet.

For the sake of the seniors i hope they beat SDSU and play Duke tough, but playing as a 9 seed in the NCAAs with two Top 10 recruiting classes is all smoke and mirrors when you look at the big picture of the embarrassments and underachieving seasons the program has experienced and is headed for....which is why this Coach and his very, very overpaid staff must be fired.

No one wants St Johns to succeed more than I do. I have been following SJU my whole life, i love St JOhns and i love our basketball program, i love the tradition, i love going to MSG, CA and road games to see the team BUT we need to get back on the right track. There are good coaches out there available who will come to SJU and who will work hard to restore the glory that we all deserve to see, but we need to get them here ASAP.

I haven't got time to look it up...but I seem to remember suspensions, transfers and other negatives under Norm as well. We never sniffed a tournament, so no one cared. That doesn't translate into a clean program.

This program has been star crossed ever since the school didn't want to help Frank McGuire take care of his ailing son...

My mind is kind of burnt sincebeing up since 4am but Norm recruited Aaron Spears who was defintiely no angel and I thought he tried landing Roy bright who had criminal background. I'm positive there were others.

For the record I was absolutely fine with trying to get those 2.

jarvis fughhedaboutit. Holy shit his program reeked. Reeked of Wilile Shaw smoking pot and what about Grady Reynolds and I'm sure there were others that I cant remember

Our Icon Lou. What would people be doing here to Lavin if he had a player throw a chair into the crowd like jayson Williams did during Lou ?

Also I went to SJU from 88-92 and just off the top of my head Lou had at leasr 2 kids who couldnt play their first year due to academically ineligible. Chucky Sproling and Lee Green. Maybe others that I dont remember and those 2 were big recruits for us

I dont care about winning with integrity. Yeah I want a relatively clean program and I am tired with some of this crap under Lavin like all the non-qualifiers and this Obekpa stuff, That stuff needs to get fixed.

But in no way do I think any coach is going to come in here and run a completely clean program because I dont think we ever had a coach that ran a completely clean program where no players got in trouble.

The earliest betting scandals happened at CCNY, Brooklyn College, and Kentucky. We had a couple of players who got caught shaving points. That was later in the '50s under Lapchick. Some of McGuire's players at North Carolina also shaved points. I believe they were all New Yorkers. That led to his resignation there.

Being Facebook friends with Felix Balamou hardly constitutes having inside info.

too bad I've known them since they were juniors in highschool...my little cousin attended OSNA...have met up with them several times.you obviously don't know shit about me. since 2 hours before it was determined that co failed his drug test I made mention of it on the board. I'm sure Felix put that over his facebook

For Francessa the hard questions are who is Christian Jones and who is Myles Stewart. Too hard for Mike there.

Good to hear

So does that mean the rumors were false? Paultz, what are your sources telling you? Can you give us any insight as to how this rumor originated? Thanks

It sounds that way thankfully. Have no idea how rumor originated. I just shared what I heard from several people consistent with some internet exchanges. In retrospect I probably should not have shared what was communicated. Again, I never implied specific infractions, etc, just noted the rumors about three players not making trip.

Paultz you aren't a pot stirrer so it's much appreciated what you posted. On the bright side knowing Marco Baldi named the 3 players and was claiming the same thing I was smart enough to place a bet in vegas that it would be wrong. I had to give 10-1 odds because Baldi's track record is worse than Norms but in the end a win is a win

First time in program history a rumor regarding bad news turned out to be false.
