Roster

I will take a shot:

From what i am told the three suspensions are not marijuana related, but for a different infraction.

This is just another example of the inmates running the asylum at SJU and why the coach needs to go.

Winning is great. I am happy the seniors are finally playing in the NCAAs. But the culture of the program stinks from the head down. I believe at SJU we can win and we can do it the right way with kids who will represent the school in a positive way and not embarrass us.

This is why i havent gotten on Lavin for not landing Briscoe - he is a major talent but we would have sold our soul to get him - and the way he made "the announcement" into such an event, can you only imagine what he would try to pull here? No player is bigger than the program and we dont need that here. We can win but more importantly we can win the right way.

The Lavin Era has destroyed the clean program Norm restored here. We can get on Norm for being a horrinle coach but at least he had dignity and he brought dignity back to SJU.

Lavin has recruited criminals, kids who were academic question marks who he still relied on to be major contributors to the program, there have been numerous suspensions (two years ago there was one that costed us an NCAA birth), the team has underachieved and we are looking at a major rebuild starting next week once we are bounced from the NCAAs because the recruiting has been less than stellar.

And this is why i have called for Lavins head all year.....he takes ZERO accountability as the program descends further and further down the toilet.

For the sake of the seniors i hope they beat SDSU and play Duke tough, but playing as a 9 seed in the NCAAs with two Top 10 recruiting classes is all smoke and mirrors when you look at the big picture of the embarrassments and underachieving seasons the program has experienced and is headed for....which is why this Coach and his very, very overpaid staff must be fired.

No one wants St Johns to succeed more than I do. I have been following SJU my whole life, i love St JOhns and i love our basketball program, i love the tradition, i love going to MSG, CA and road games to see the team BUT we need to get back on the right track. There are good coaches out there available who will come to SJU and who will work hard to restore the glory that we all deserve to see, but we need to get them here ASAP.

I haven't got time to look it up...but I seem to remember suspensions, transfers and other negatives under Norm as well. We never sniffed a tournament, so no one cared. That doesn't translate into a clean program.

This program has been star crossed ever since the school didn't want to help Frank McGuire take care of his ailing son...

Lavin has recruited criminals

Can you please list the criminals that he brought here?

I applaud Avon for his love of St. John's basketball!

As a shy teenager 12 years ago he wrote a similar missive (see below) but never sent it out of fear of losing his job.  I am glad he has matured since and is contributing to society in a positive way.

Jarvis has recruited criminals, kids who were academic question marks who he still relied on to be major contributors to the program, there have been numerous suspensions, arrests, drug use, illegal payments to players, the team has underachieved and we are looking at a major rebuild next year because the recruiting has been less than stellar and we have walk ons as starters.
And this is why I have called for Jarvis' bald head all year.....he takes ZERO accountability as the program descends further and further down the toilet."

Any way we can keep this thread about the status of our roster and not yet another Lavin debate? Man this is getting old....

I would normally agree, but in the case the two topics are related.

Not really. But clearly one poster in particular, with his personal agenda, is so much trying to make it so.

Tony, there are two sides to every story. Sometimes BOTH sides are wrong.

What does that even mean?
Stop wasting our time and ruining threads with your gibberish.

Did Norm recruit Lance at Lincoln??? You can say what you want about Lav, but this isn't the Seton Hall team from a few years back where guys were getting collared for armed robberies.

Not trying to be a conspiracy theorist, but in our NIT game against PC:
1, D'Lo shows up with a black eye
2. Balamou is not on the bench because of an "eye infection". Which is now being called an "ankle problem".
3. Branch starts over Sheed because "he's a senior and he's played better in practice"
4. The team mails it in and in a post game comment, D'lo says "we had no energy and I'm not sure why."

Since then CO gets suspended for drug use and allegedly 3 other kids are about to be suspended for other violations of team rules. Am I the only one connecting dots here? . Its like there was some sort of wild party in the hotel room the night before the PC game and all hell broke lose.

Please expand on the Frank McGuire situation with his son. I've never heard that. Thanks. Incredibly, Dean Smith followed McGuire at UNC, which makes that lineage rather contemporary

I'm with you. This is crazy

2. Balamou is not on the bench because of an "eye infection". Which is now being called an "ankle problem".

Ummmm no... That's bullshit..he just sprained his ankle a couple of days ago... Stop trying to make shit up. First hand info that he sprained his ankle and is trying to get it ready for Friday by getting treatment on it 3 times a day.

From The Book: ACC Basketball by J. Samuel Walker page 79-80

In 1947, he was unexpectedly offered the head coaching job at St. John's where his salary of $7,500 per year was the highest in the country.

McGuire soon proved his ability to win at the coolege level; his teams finished in the top 10 rankings in 1950 and 19521 and played for the national championship in 1952.

When approached about the UNC job, his initila reaction was, "Why leave New York?" But he was staioned in Chapel Hill during World War II and liked the area. He also thought living in NC mighgt provided a better enviornment for his son Frankie who was born with cerebal palsy.

With those considerations in mind, McGuire, accompanied by his close friend Harry Gotkin ( a former star at St. John's), traveled to Chapel Hill where he quickly emerged as the leading candidate.

Carolina offered him the job at $9,500 a year.

For those of us who are basketball junkies (I guess that is all of us !), I highly recommend this book.

Samuel Walker is the brother of former UVa. star, Wally Walker.

Frank McGuire left SJU because of the 1951 college betting scandals. NYC BB and MSG took a tremendous hit.
I had a cousin who had cerebral palsy whose family moved to Nassau County in 1950 so he could attend what was then one of the best schools in the country at that time for children with cerebral palsy.
Also the air in Queens, Nassau County and Westchester in 1952 was prestine.
I don't blame McGuire for taking advantage of the opportunity but he wasn't totally honest about his reason.
