The maturation of RJ Luis has been breathtaking and to some degree, much faster than expected.

Last season Luis might do something spectacular and rarely seen before, but just as likely to drive wildly into a pile of defenders where you could see a train wreck happening before your eyes. Still there was that potential.

Coaches often preach, "Let the game come to you! Stay in control! Don't force things!"

As our lead unraveled yesterday, there was RJ, calmly draining shots from the outside because the defense gave him the daylight he needed. Inside he took it strong and if hammered made his free throws.

Yes, Kadary's winner was the marquis punctuation at the world's most famous arena, but without RJ's steady 2nd half, we'd be an unhappy bunch.

Had some of my family with me yesterday, including my 4 year old grandson (on his way to becoming a Johnnies fan). My son-in-law, who knows college bball inside and out said, Luis might just be the best player in the country right now.

Quite possibly a first round pick. Enjoy him while he is here. Great kid. Another Pitino success story, maybe his next Donovan Mitchell.

In the new reality, don't think every portal kid will give sju serious consideration.

Suddenly Rick looks 40 and not a peep about packing it in.

Umm, RJ missed 2 key free throws, including the front end of a one and one, at the end to let Providence continue their comeback. Not to denigrate RJ, just your memory.
And he threw a ball away on a 3-1. Steady isn’t the word I’d use. (This also isn’t an anti RJ post)

No. He played great at times. Just saying I wouldn’t call him steady. He does amazing things and boneheaded things
Thus the “giveth and taketh” descriptions noted here about his play. He’ll never be the cerebral player we all enjoy, tending to do some odd things. He forces shots a lot, but was fine in that respect yesterday. You also can’t minimize his rebounding, which has bailed us out a lot this year. Yeah, he missed a few key foul shots at crunch time, but also hit huge jumpers.

My conclusion is his good far outweighs the bad. He will never be a savvy, heady Mullin type guy, but brings a lot to the table and Pitino knows the team would not be where they are without him. Imo, he is not the super star some fans feel he is, but is an offensive asset on a team that sorely needs that. He is not a lock down defender, but manages to some generate timely blocks on the interior.

Lastly, Kadary is very good for RJ and seeks him out in good spots to shoot. That really helps him avoid too much “one on one or two” head down drives into traffic. He really in tandem with KR shoots much more in rhythm.
