I may be wrong, but I thought Richmond was the highest paid player on the roster this year, at approximately $1 million. So we're going to double that next year? If so, this really is getting out of control.
An incoming freshman got 7 mill from BYU. That, I think, is insane.

NIL is all shrouded in mystery where it's hard to tell what the market is & what a good or bad deal is. But assuming our budget is increasing next year, maybe the % of money Kadary's getting this year is equal -- or close to equal -- what Luis gets from us next year at 1.75 or 2 mill.

RJ would certainly be worth it. Familiar with Pitino's system, preseason Big East Player of the Year, and all the things he needs to work on align with team success: more passing, less predictability, consistent on defense, and better three point shooting.

I love RJ. Just think the rate at which these player salaries is going up is insane, and unsustainable for all but a handful of schools.

Should the NBA to use a blend of the NHL and MLB model where they allow their players to be drafted and allow him to stay in juniors or college.

Make it where the NBA team has until the drafted player’s junior year to bring him in, or forfeit the player and he re-enters the draft. Players who receive NBA salaries cannot receive NIL money.

The fear of course is that it may cause some teams to hoard players because they can keep drafted players on the team without paying and use their NIL money to overwhelm the transfer market.

I guess, unless someone corrals the NIL in, nothing will change.

And yes, I am stealing this idea from Moose (not proud of it though), who tossed this around pre-NIL.

This and/or a posting fee system similar to Europe where you'd have to pay the school that you're getting the transfer from makes a lot of sense also.

good breakdown: https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2024/07/second-round-pick-exception-details-for-2024-25.html

"...the second-round pick exception allows NBA teams to sign their second-round picks to standard contracts without requiring cap room or another exception (such as the mid-level) to do so.."

i could see RJ leaving if a team is guaranteeing* one of the type of deals highlighted

39th pick of the draft, surprise rookie of the season. Similar to RJ, but much better from 3pt.

We may be "lucky" that this NBA draft is absolutely loaded.

2 mill guaranteed from us + an insurance policy paid for with a good chance to play himself into the first round is way more appealing than coming back for a senior season used to be prior to NIL.

If someone is promising him a late first, he has to go. I think NIL be persuasive for mid-second round caliber players. I guess we'll find out.

The shins may make him more likely to get safe/guaranteed money. This is the first time all season where I think RJ actually getting drafted in the first feels like a possibility. Amazing how he's blossoming.

I think folks are underestimating the urgency here with RJ to go pro. He’s 22. When is the last time there’s been a 23 yo drafted in first round (honest question)?

"but much better from 3pt"

This is so crucial to the NBA right now...you have to be able to hit the three at a very high clip...RJ is currently missing that piece. He's got pretty much everything else that checks boxes for NBA. Yes he can develop that piece but man he's even a 35% three point shooting clip away from being a top 20 pick

Yup. Right now he's shooting 26% -- which is actually a 6% jump from from last year (maybe the injury makes you give it a grain of salt). A NBA team may overlook that if his FT % is very elite, but it's a pretty good 75%.

I completely agree with you. If he can have 45/38/80 statline along with more consistent focus on defense + less predictability on offense, he can be a lotto pick -- no matter his age.

The thing with RJ that doesn’t rattle the Stats is his heart and determination .

How many times does he get the ball underneath on a rebound , with bigger guys all over him AB’s he still gets the ball and scores

His putbacks are amazing .

Plus , he usually will shut down the other team’s best player or scorer by playing scorching defense

And , as we saw against UCONN , his midrange J is lethal . Clutch .

That shot he made off Zuby’s pick was off the charts . He actuary grabbed Zuby’s to accelerate around the pick to get the ball and shoot
He shoots a high arc to boot

I don’t care what the rep is on McNeeley or Solo Ball, RJ was the best player on the Court on Friday .

If he plays pro next season, it will be as a two-way player primarily in the G-League until his shooting improves. 800 people in suburbs v. sold out MSG. Kind of appealing.

We are a Final Four contender with him. He plays his ass off on defense, plays even harder on the glass, and he's our best offensive player.
