Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

L live in northern Virginia and have for many years. When I was coaching my son's sixth-grade CYO basketball team, we visited George Mason to watch them practice. This was the year before the Final Four run. When practice ended, Coach Larranaga came and found us as we were walking out, introduced himself to the kids, took them into the lockerrom and introduced them to all the George Mason players. He was so nice to the kids, talking to them and high-fiving them. A great guy - and a terrific coach. I'll always root for him.

Here is a question…… does anyone else think that Jim Larranaga on the sideline a lot like Jim Boeheim?

here is a clip of Coach Larranaga showing his smooth dance steps.

Yes!!! Lol. Thought he was either a thin clone or a brother separated at birth. Lol.

Q: What do you want St. John’s fans to say when they watch your team play?

A: I want relentless passion. I want the fans to say, “I can’t believe how hard those guys are playing.”

Q: Do you plan on making St. John’s the hardest-playing, best-conditioned team in basketball?

A: I just want them to live up to my standards of all my teams. All my teams have been in great shape, all my teams play really, really hard. It’s a subjective thing. … There’s no ranking for that. I just want them to live up to my standards.

Q: What won’t you tolerate?

A: A lack of work ethic … lateness … inability to be passionate … [a lack of] appreciation for where you are and what you’re all about. Those are things that go into the making of a program. St. John’s right now has to go through a period of … you just gotta understand what work is all about, you have to understand how to be a pro, how to act like a professional. Oftentimes, they did not act like professionals, and they have to learn how to act like a professional, no different than I had with the Knicks with Mark Jackson or Patrick Ewing — they acted like professionals. And they gotta learn that. Because the stories I’ve heard, it was anything but acted like professionals.

Q: Do you fantasize about that kind of environment for St. John’s basketball?

A: Take this year for instance, they played Connecticut at the Garden, and it was 80 percent Connecticut [fans]. I want to get it to the point where it’s 80 percent St. John’s. The one thing you have to understand about St. John’s, as you know as well as anybody, is their subway alumni. A lot of their fans did not go to St. John’s. It’s just they’re college basketball fans, this is the local team they’re gonna root for.

Yes. Difference is larranaga is from nyc. I am surprised St. John’s never considered him as a coaching candidate

Imagine where St. John's would be now if we'd hired Larranaga 20 yrs ago. Would still be among the top 5 winningest programs in history and prob a championship or two

looks like we know who our PG is

Q: What are your favorite New York things?

A: The pulse of Manhattan is probably my favorite. Christmastime in Manhattan is one of my favorites. Sometimes I could just visualize sitting there with a bag of popcorn,

Q & A with Serby

Some interesting comments. Especially about the culture under CMA. Naturally he talked about "foregivness". Smart, and a tad bit self serving. lol. And he said what I've been saying all along; essentially that alum only make up a portion of our fan base. Put a quality product on the court and you'll draw NYC college basketball fans from all over the country to come and support SJU. Very refreshing to read.

Great interview by Serby. All I can say is we are at a different level now with him as Coach. My question to those in the know is “How bad was the culture with CMA? “ and why was Andre Curbello so revered ?

The answer to that last question almost brought a tear to my eye. First of all the fact that he understands how many UConn fans were at that game. And second, as someone like myself who is not an album, that he acknowledges they make up a large portion of the fan base. He just seems to get it, love to see it.

It still feels surreal. Wonder when that feeling will go away? Probably our first 3 game loosing streak. 😂

Q: Will St. John’s be in the NCAA Tournament next year?

A: It all depends on what type of players we get. I’ve gotta do a redo of the team. That’s not easy. So right now I’ve probably gotta bring in seven or eight players, that’s probably the most I’ve ever had to bring in. If we bring in the right players, it’s distinctly possible.

No BS'ing with him, he's straight up.

Q: What would your message be to St. John’s fans?

A: Buckle up, we’re gonna have a great ride together. And it is together. It’s I’m joining your team, I’m not joining my team.

I can't wait for Novmber.

And bumped it up from 6-8 to 7-8 new players. 7 new guys would mean 3 more to stay outside Joel, Storr and Traore. Still of belief that Posh and Wusu are in the discussion.
Braziler speculates that Keira, Storr and Posh may return as well and that Gardiner and Lendeborg have spoken to staff are remain committed.
