Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Based upon my analysis of the current roster and this year's transfer portal, it's clear what Rick and his staff have to do: get good players.

Not disputing it sucks, but on a defensively challenged team, could we have used him if Pitino could rein him in a bit?

That said, I don't know particulars of why he is no longer here. That leak never trickled all the way down to the masses like some other players' situations.
None of this is really directed at you, just piggybacking on your comment.

So far Jones wanted to play for Stubblefield, CMA and then Penny. I would graciously call those guys "players coaches." I don't have the exact background on why he entered the portal either, but I have never seen one piece of concrete evidence that it was a Pitino decision. Even though it is portrayed as such here. The idea that Jones looked at how hard Pitino works and rides his players and said "check please" makes sense to me. Pitino isn't for everyone. And I haven't seen him play but his fans here say he is thriving. Which would mean he made a good decision, when he, Jones, decided to put his name in the portal. Because I would hope nobody thought he thrived at SJU.

Or this, again, a guess, if we use (and I've seen nothing to support it) the theory that Pitino forced Jones to transfer. Maybe it was that Pitino preferred Luis, a sophomore, to another player (Jones) with one year of eligibility. Pitino didn't know Luis would be hurt. And based on watching Jones last year and Luis this year I can't imagine a world where they could co-exist on a basketball court. And Pitino did not know that Luis, and guys like him, were going to get granted more free transfers. In the world they were recruited both Luis and Ejifor were great players to land. Then the NCAA lost their nerve - again.

Or maybe Pitino ran Jones off because he didn't like his face. Or, the most likely, that he preferred the graduate programs at Memphis to SJU.

I don't have inside information on his departure either.

Yes , in that game yes . But , if you were a teammate would you like to watch Jones fire away and never see the ball ?
It’s more his shot selection attitude . Like I have the ball and I’m putting it up . Screw you .
If you want equally opportunities for the players watch baseball where everyone gets 3-4 at bats 😉

Sobering and realistic commentary Mug
Realistic with the exception of using how one player has performed this year as "anti-Pitino" recruiting ammunition that actually has impact. I just don't see that happening. Track record matters. You can pick any top shelf coach in the country -- from Bill Self down -- and point to plenty of kids who didn't work as hyped.

Ain't gonna be just one player this applies to

Surprisingly I'm not feeling crushed by this loss.

Starved for success I believe we anointed Rick a savior, a magician, a basketball god who functioned way above all others. He would strike the stone with his staff and water would pour out in the desert. He would turn water into wine at Cana so the guests at the banquet could revel.

Then i hear the distant echoes of a great SJU coach who was stolen away for a paltry sum by UNC and who took a bunch of NYC players with him. "You coach, and I'll get the players", he challenged, "and I'll beat you every time!", taunted the great Frank McGuire.

So we in our glee of hiring the great Rick Pitino, assumed that Rick could coach all thess kids up, sift through the portal with an eye for gems, and have them playing together like the New York Philharmonic. It was never reality but we wanted so badly to believe it. Scientists have said that mana in the desert may likely have been the feces of insects. We ate it up.

Before you think this is smoke and mirrors, let me stop you right there. Rick csn coach as well as anyone, probably better than anyone. He can teach the same. He can snd will still outwork everyone. He is that good IMO.

I like our roster, i really do. What we are missing is a stud, a Tyler Kolek, a Bryce Hopkins, a Spencer, Clingan, or Karaban (to show you how good uconn is). I think we have a good supporting cast, not great but good. We are The Office without Steve Carell, MASH without Alan Alda, Seinfeld without Seinfeld. Good, but not good enough to watch.

So as Howie Rose likes to say ironically after wins "Put it in the books!" This team is just about done. Our magic number is 2 with 6 to go. Two more losses and the fat lady sings.

Can we go 5-1? Sure. Is it likely? When you root for the Mets, Jets, and St. John's you know the answer.

As Kenny Rogers sang "You got to know when to fold em, know when to walk away and knowbwhen to run."

I'll stick around till the patient dies but im ready to put the balls away.

Agree with most of this but as I said in a former post, why wouldn’t we believe Rick could do it he said so himself…….”St John’s will be back fast, not in years but in months” Why would we not believe him, He’s Rick Pitino.

Obviously Rick has forgotten more than I will ever know, but the absence of a regular rotation and distinct roles for guys even this late in season is puzzling. I am sure he had his reasons, but hopefully next year those areas will be clear rolling into BE play with some modest adjustments as things evolve of course.
