Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

I’m not asking you to do more work, but I’d be curious what the NET for new coaches looked like pre-portal transfers. Because, while it shouldn’t be labeled as easy, your data does show a lot of the coaches actually making significant strides with new coaches — something that seems harder to do if you’re limited to jucos and high school seniors.

I suspect improvement is definitely easier but also is still incremental. Going from bad to the tournament is still rare. I think the year-over-year conference records show how hard it is to go from bad to even .500 in a year.

Cooley and Stoudamire have large NET improvements but those teams are still very bad.

Wrong W/L for Rick.

Still have confidence in Pitino and think we are extremely lucky to have him. Obviously the last month or so has been tough on the court and both Pitino and fans alike are frustrated. Definitely lots of things causing concern both from the play on the court and what's been said in postgame pressers.

On the court, it's troublesome that this team that was supposed to start peaking around this time of year is doing the opposite. The team was ahead of schedule, playing our best in the 6 game stretch starting with the conference opener against Xavier, the only loss in that stretch being a close game @UConn. You can maybe even include the @Creighton game in that as well. Starting with the Seton Hall game we've plateaued and maybe even regressed while other teams in the league like Xavier and Butler have raced past and are continuing the improve. We've been generally healthy the whole time too.

On the individual level, players aren't getting better as the season goes on. With the exception of Zuby, has any player actually gotten better over the past couple months? Soriano has his moments but has no consistency and is exposed by bigs that he can't push around physically. Dingle and Alleyne haven't come close to meeting expectations and it doesn't seem like they are on the cusp of figuring it out. Taylor has regressed (though not by too much) since earlier in the season. Luis has his flashes but still way too many boneheaded plays. Dunlap has been virtually invisible since his two game mini Linsanity run. Sim is still unplayable.

In the postgames, Rick is dropping clues that he's not as confident as he was once was that the success here will come in a big and quick way. His comments about how difficult it is to build a culture in today's college sports landscape as well as comments about how tough it is for first year guys to pick up the system tells me that he still has a good chunk of adapting to do, because a team with first year players playing major roles is going to be the norm across the country now and other coaches have figured out how to make that work.

On the recruiting front, while NIL is going to be the deciding factor for most kids, guys wanting to play for a HOF coach and committing here due "The Pitino Factor" has taken a big blow this year. You better believe opposing coaches are going to talking about how "The Pitino Factor" turned the second leading scorer in the country last year into a guy barely scoring 10ppg. Whether justified or not, it's going to give kids some pause.
All great points. Especially concerned about "The Pitino Factor" you mentioned.

Didn't really like Rick's "it's not going to happen this year" comment. Was he trying some "reverse psychology" to motivate the team? Was he trying to prepare the fan base for the NIT? Has he given up on the tournament for this year?
Any or all of the above are not what I expected from him.

When you hire Rick Pitino you get Rick Pitino. He says all kinds of stuff and always has. I don’t know how much of what he says even he believes. And at 71 I don’t expect him to change.

That’s not to say some of his comments are not worthy of criticism, especially on a message board. Or that I always approve. Personally I just smile, or cringe, or whatever depending on the day. But it’s all part of the “Pitino Experience” which I enjoy overall.

Fans have always been critical of the coaches who gave us the "coach speak" press conferences every season. We had coaches who wanted to leave the press conference the minute they started. This transparency is what sports writers and many of us wanted to hear from our coaches.

You have shifted gears here the last few games .
You got off Jenkins , since he’s our best player and jumped on Pitino .

Pitino didn’t jettison any players . Fr Shanley , Mike Cragg , Van Macon saw and reported on that Team’s players . Whatever they saw was enough to make a Coaching change and change the roster .
Posh and Storrr made their own decisions to leave .
It is difficult to converse with you because you jump to massive conclusions. I am not “on Pitino.”
I think he’s the greatest coach of my lifetime. I say repeatedly that I have full faith in him and expect to be good next year.

It’s exhausting to not be able to discuss anyone with any sort of nuance. He made mistakes…he is the first to admit it. He has a brilliant track record of learning and adapting.

I think the early Jenkins domination fatally damaged this team. We have two players who will go one on one all game long without a second thought and then 11 guys who overthink every single shot. The PGs main job is to get everyone involved and make them better.

We can’t complain in February that we don’t have a balanced team. That is not only a natural consequence of your leading shot-taker also dominating the dribbling, it is the expected outcome.

This is who we are now and there isn’t enough time for any material changes.

1+1 doesn’t always equal 2 in basketball. For good back courts that gel and have chemistry it is more than 2 and for backcourts like our’s, it’s less than 2.

I would like to clarify the narrative that CRP brought in who he wanted after he got rid of the majority of the team, as that is just false.
He brought in the players he could. Granted he started late and was clearly at a disadvantage. He also did not have a staff from day 1 and lacked the manpower to identify annd get in touch with the kids he would like to bring in. All he had was Van who was working his tail off. But perhaps he should have considered those factors prior to getting rid of the majority of the team. He put himself in the position of having to recruit over 10 players.
As for Posh, here is a kid who gave it all for 3 years and was screwed over his third year with the Curbalho circus, and was a defensive leader, something we are currently crying for. His intensity on D is clearly missed.
If he blew off a workout to go to AC with his girlfriend it was a poor choice. But lord knows I did far far worse than that at age 21 and would hate for it to be public info the mistakes I made at age 21.
If Wusu beat up a team manager please note that there have been other SJU players that have done worse but were given the opportunity by Louie to redeem themselves. In time they did and all parties greatly benefitted. The player learned to control his anger and became an outstanding player and SJU greatly benefitted from his ability.
Having said that I believe CRP is super smart and will figure this new landscape out. We should have a good returning core with RJ, Taylor, the 2 freshman, Zuby, Drissa, the 2 kids from Iona who are sitting out, and the three signed freshmen. We will be much less dependant on the portal and hopefully will not have to settle this spring on who we can get.
