Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

That’s very deep HaHa ! It’s quite quite obvious in this day and age the effects of mental illness in society.

To blame being a bad sport time after time on his mental issue is a cop out. Is he not competing when he’s winning by 10 and

not acting like a jerk. Since he’s winning it’s OK but if he isn’t it not ? Than the act gets old real quick
Like I said, your posts say way more about you than him. Bad sport? Really!! Working the refs is part of the job description, see Jay Wright, K, etc., etc., etc. Jealous much??

Jealous of what ? Not having a coach with mental issues. Win at all cost ? I thought one of the issues we couldnt compete

before NIL was we weren’t willing to be dirty like other programs. is it working the refs or his mental issues. Or does he and

people get to choose when that applies. Like I said you get very deep HaHa

Serious question is this SJUWillRockNYC on a burner account lol

I agree with this sentiment but the only thing I will say, I have heard from a lot of different people who have witnessed it.... what makes Danny Hurley unique in his on court craziness, is he spends a lot of time directly insulting and yelling at the opposing coach

Which is something I find particularly odd. I am not used to seeing that. Obviously in most sports (football for example) there isn't a logistical way for opposing coaches to interact during the game.

But even in basketball I rarely see a coach actually focusing much of his rage on the opposing coach. I find it super odd. And I feel like this is why Rick is kinda messing with Uconn quite a bit. He's not used to having a coach come at him so directly and is just playing his own mind games with him. I for one enjoy the back and forth, especially because Rick can partake in this but still have our guys ready to play.
Interesting…during the UCONN game, during one of the many times he was working the refs, he seemed to be motioning toward the SJ bench.

By the way, always felt that Wright whined a lot as well.

In simplest terms, UConn has won National Championships from Calhoun on, have many deplorable fans I’ve seen at MSG through the years, Hurley always had chip on his shoulder and we have been mired in mediocrity.

Rick is giving us a good shot at relevance and contending for BE and Tourney success. His tweaks at UConn are amusing and his use of media is effective and getting attention. I have no interest picking at Hurley’s personality flaws, the guy can coach. If Rick was exactly the same as Hurley on sidelines, I think most of us would be fine if we are winning. This is not an etiquette class, rather a business (more than ever) and if the CEO is a bit of a prick, but is successful I am ok.

I have a soft spot for Pitino’s sarcasm and use of hyperbole (part of my unnatural fanboy). It keeps the program part of the news cycle and can even tweak opponents.

But also need to remember that the Big East was built in large part because of its charismatic coaches. Carnesecca, Thompson, Boeheim, and Massimino all were great coaches, but also entertaining (and even though Seton Hall struggled, we all know Raftery is a character).

Pitino is of course aware of this, since he walked among them for a couple of years and wants to recreate it for the benefit of not only SJU, but the conference at large.

A little back and forth between Pitino and Hurley, which admittedly does not reach the level of humor as when Thompson came out in the identical sweater Looie was wearing, but it is a start. It can come in handy as the BE negotiates its next TV deal.

We all rather have this type of banter, while finally seeing a light at the end of the program’s tunnel, than discussing how the NCAA tournament is almost a lost cause like we were in so many past seasons.

I wasn't at the Uconn game this year, but I have heard from people there Danny seemed to take issue with Rick leaving the designated coaching box, and would not let it go the whole game

Pitino was literally at the corner 3 spot against Villanova and received a warning from the ref. I don't blame Hurley

(Danny was at center court with his arm around the ref’s shoulder during a break in the game.)

That one was bad (and hilarious)

Being in the Pavilion for that was so funny because the game stopped and everyone was confused why, and when Nova fans figured out why they all started jeering at Rick. Rick just quietly walked back on over to his spot. I was cracking up

The replay on TV showing it was also hilarious since it was so egregious

Still the moment from this season where I got the most mad.

He didn't like the whistle he got in the first half. So he got to have a whole ass smoke session with the refs during the game. Put his arms around them, explained his gripes. Next thing you know UConn is getting calls left and right.

With Plans taking form on here by fans , does this mean Calhoun , Boeheim , Lavin , Mullin , etc are going to come ?

Also a question , is the Coaches Box the same dimensions for both Coaches ? Or , does it vary by School , Arena , etc ?

In other words , is there a Standard dimension to the Box ?

On TV , these boxes look like they can barely accommodate the Coach walking the sideline .

The only thing I know about the coaching box is that ricks not good at staying inside it lol

Raftery brought a lot of entertainment to what was a poor program at the time. Time for Stubblefield to work on his one-liners!
