Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

82/83 team included Bernard Randolph, Tyrone Corbin and Kenny Patterson (Forest Hills High School). Dallas Comegys (he of the no call lane violation) who joined in the 83/84 season and Rod Strickland joined in the 85/86 season.
Horrible ending in 83 with a few injuries and players under the weather against Georgia in the sweet 16, horrible ending in 86 with Walter’s sprained ankle and a horrible ending in 87 with the no call on Comegys who clearly committed a lane violation while playing a home court game for DePaul.
If not for bad luck we certainly have not had much luck. I am not even going to discuss the technical on Billy Singleton a few years later and the bump by Sconnie Penn. Oh what could have been.

Not to mention Terrance Stansbury’s buzzer beater bomb in 84 and Vernon Maxwell’s heave in 88. Things are overdue to go the other way.

I agree 1000%.
The reason I didn't mention those 2 season ending games is we were not strong those years, we got into the tournament and that was great, but we could not have gone too far. The years I listed were very strong teams IMHO.

Understood. For me the two that hurt the most were 83 and 86. Both teams were #1 seeds in their region.

The 83 team proved to be the best in the Big East as well as beating defending champ UNC with Jordan and Perkins. The East Region was setup for the rematch with the Heels, but Vern Fleming and Terry Fair sent us packing at the Dome. Tough way for senior class of Russell, Goodwin and Williams to end their careers.

The 86 team was special. Although we had no bench, we proved we can play with the best losing to Duke by one (damn Johnny Dawkins) and drilled eventual National Champion Louisville in the preseason Big Apple NIT. Then dominated the Big East and got a favorable draw as top seed in the West with Louisville as the #2 seed. However the second Walter hurt his ankle it was a wrap.

I'm still shocked at how badly Lou's recruiting became during the program's best years when you end up with an 86 squad and the best player off the bench is John Hempel with his 3ppg.

There was so little depth going forward.

87 was not that much better with Terry Bross seeing major minutes.

88 had Lou patch together a JUCO backcourt duo of Boo and Porter.

The 82-83 team that beat UNC, I was at that great game in Springfield sitting front row, also had junior Matt Doherty ( who thank g d we never hired as our head coach despite Dee’s vociferous objections ) opposite junior Sam Perkins and a freshman Daugherty at center who I believe was the first pick in the NBA draft a few years later.
I agree with you espken which is why I listed 83 and 86 , they were such painful those losses. I listed 87 which was stolen from us but I got over that loss relatively quickly. I am still not over 83, 86 the Duke technical on Singleton and the Sconnie Penn bump.

87 could have had Gary Payton supposedly.

I know it was early in the tournament but what about 1990 loss to Duke. The refs stole that game from us. Duke went to the finals were they were crushed by UNLV.

Caught a bad break prior to 1986-87 season. Jayson Williams was a prop 48 victim and Moses Scurry lacked the grades for admission and enrolled at San Jacinto College. Both freshman would have fit in nicely with the core of Jackson, Glass and Jones.

Lou hit big with 2 McDonalds AA’s in 1988 with Sealy and Werdann.

And, per accolades, Chucky Sproling. Sproling was considered a top 40 player in the '88 class.

I seem to recall that Lou's targets: Daryll Walker, Gerald Greene, & John Morton, all spurned him, instead going to Seton Hall for the 85-86 season. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

How about the team that lost to Joe Barry Carrol and Purdue. I forgot what year that was. Maybe 79-80.

That was a very good team as well, that won 17 straight but could not beat the big dogs. Beat defending champ Michigan State AM (after Magic) but lost at Tennessee and at home against Louisville (eventual national champ) and Syracuse (infamous Louie Orr charge game). Got a crappy seed and had to play Purdue on their home court. Tough way for Bernard Rencher and Reggie Carter to end their collegiate careers.
