Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Barclays and UBS are poor substitutes for MSG. Nothing beats MSG in terms of atmosphere or convenience. If we can’t get decent enough crowds at MSG, then just play at CA. There is nothing worse than a game in a large arena that’s 2/3 empty. That is DePaul basketball.
I’m willing to give UBS a chance but Barclays forget about

Not so fast. Rick didn't want any games at CA, so there was a scramble to book all these Garden games, then fill them in with UBS when the garden wasn't available. Barclays was not a home game, right - part of an invited doubleheader. Rick now regrets ubs because of pathetic ticket sales. He overestimated our fan base and would pull ubs games back to CA. He understandably wants a big program right away, but starting with Michigan sluggish sales and ubs poor sales is coming to realize our paying fan base is much smaller than he realuzed and will take winning to grow. But to be certain, the small CA season is on his urging.

We will get there. Just win
Rick said during early press conference that he wants to play ALL BE games at the Garden. It was too late to schedule all for this season. Hopefully, all BE and a few Top 25's at MSG will be the plan for next season.

I do wonder if Pitino will rethink how many games are played at CA in the future once he realizes how much of a home court advantage it provides, despite all of its other shortcomings

Only if by end of year we are putting big numbers at MSG

Understood. Thanks.

Four of the five remaining games at MSG are weekend 12:00 start. I believe these are the best times to attract a large SJU crowd at the Garden. I know getting avaialble weekend dates at MSG is difficult but mid-week (especially 8:30 start and/or vs bottom BE tier team) more difficult to get large crowd.

Not a fan of Barclays. Bland arena and personally a PITA to get to personally.

But if you included the game in season ticket packages there would have been more people there. I was flying and didn't see the game and didn't bother to look into it when I landed and saw the score. How bad was the attendance?
Not great attendance…I was able to purchase center court ticket (row 17) on Stubhub for $48 plus $20 fee

Attendance would be worse than what just happened
The only way Barclays works is if it’s part of the season ticket package — pure and simple. A weekend would also be very helpful + the university should make this as easiest as possible for students to go to. Charter a bus, set up a pregame spot (plenty of options) get a restaurant to give a discount to students nearby, etc.

I think Pitino may be realizing it isn’t a bad idea to play a small, emphasize small, number of BE games at Carnesecca. He’s commented a few times how he think it’s a real home court advantage and tough for the opposing team. Of course no power 5 games or the better Big East programs/traditional rivals.

DePaul at 6:30 on a Tuesday night in February anywhere besides CA seems unwise. Have we ever played them in an arena? Maybe when George Mikan played?

Espken can correct me, but we played them at MSG in the 82-83 season to a sold out crowd. We were great that season, finished the regular season number 3 and they were still good. They were fantastic 78-81 I believe.
