Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

How many games in how many years has SJU played at Barclays’s in front of pathetic crowds and it takes Pitino one game to figure out what a waste.
Is he so much smarter in basketball matters than most or were the SJU people in charge just a little too slow to make smart decisions?

Not hard to see who calls the shots, Ed Kull will adjust 😇

Not a fan of Barclays. Bland arena and personally a PITA to get to personally.

But if you included the game in season ticket packages there would have been more people there. I was flying and didn't see the game and didn't bother to look into it when I landed and saw the score. How bad was the attendance?

Not so fast. Rick didn't want any games at CA, so there was a scramble to book all these Garden games, then fill them in with UBS when the garden wasn't available. Barclays was not a home game, right - part of an invited doubleheader. Rick now regrets ubs because of pathetic ticket sales. He overestimated our fan base and would pull ubs games back to CA. He understandably wants a big program right away, but starting with Michigan sluggish sales and ubs poor sales is coming to realize our paying fan base is much smaller than he realuzed and will take winning to grow. But to be certain, the small CA season is on his urging.

We will get there. Just win

It’s funny because I actually hate Barclays but love the convenience of it.

There weren’t many St. John’s fans, probably even or slightly more BC fans. But id also say plenty of Colorado/Miami fans also left after their game, so it was one of those typical mid season tournaments where it was just a bland atmosphere because people left after their team.

The context of the weather should also be noted. There were talks of 25mph winds which I’m sure limited some from going.

Wasn’t UBS tickets not on sale until December?

The Michigan game was SO deflating to go to. I can’t imagine casual fans who went to that were hunting for tickets in December. I’m sure tickets will get sold if we win, this year.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Hopefully Hofstra @ UBS will draw somewhat ok because of the Hofstra base and on a Sat early day. Maybe a lot of Long Island families.

Seton Hall on a Sat might be ok..However, the DePaul game on a Tues night would be a tough sell and likely few going to pay for that match up.

Assume the costs to cancel not worth it?

Sparse.

I notice Steve Masiello spends a lot of time with Chris Ledlum at breaks or when he comes out. Perhaps he has helped him acclimate and let game come to him more.

Coming off injuries, players often are in a big hurry to fully feel productive & sometimes force things. Ledlum seems a bit more under control lately. Finishing bunnies still a work in progress, but do notice he uses body better to draw fouls which helps us.
Wow that’s a great notice. Mas has his ear Ledlum completely trusts him. Mas spent a lot of time with him on the off day in Charleston

Ticketmaster now controls sales. Not sure of what the holdup was but in any case demand has been much lower than expected. Those games will likely be pulled back to CA next year

I do wonder if Pitino will rethink how many games are played at CA in the future once he realizes how much of a home court advantage it provides, despite all of its other shortcomings.

I agree, lately there have been some positive CA comments from Pitino, I think he now sees this is not a program with a fan base to support 18 large arena games. Even if it was MSG. I will make no predictions about that for the future.

From what I can gather on Ticketmaster the UBS attendance is going to be bad. I heard rumblings from people that it was UBS fault but it is insane how long it took to make tickets available. I know three couples who were planning on going to Hofstra, got sick of waiting, and made other plans. Schedules fill.

But I don’t especially care if they play at UBS either, even though it’s close to me. And with two of those games being Hofstra and DePaul I don’t see those as arena worthy anyway and expect tiny crowds.

There is a balance that SJU has accomplished in the past when successful. Enough games at MSG to be a major style program. Buy type games and a few lower level BE games at Carnesecca.

For over 30 years Pitino coached at programs that would never have been booked at CA. It’s certainly not a recruiting selling point, or comfortable (!) but there is no rent to be paid and it provides a better home court advantage than a one third full arena.

And Rick likes to win.
