Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Who knows in a month, or two, or next year? But right now the absolute second Dunlap goes on the floor the other team clears out for whoever he is guarding and they score immediately. It's dramatically bad and you can't play a kid like that unless a game is fully decided.

Based on reports of his shooting ability he should have a fine career, and it would be great if it's all at SJU, but until his defense improves, he has to do his in-game learning mostly from the bench.
Was thinking if they Want* to play him, if his shooting is such an asset, they would have to play a zone with him up top... might not be bad with his length defending the 3....

Hopefully he gets some burn versus Holy Cross and Sacred Heart.
RP trying to get the team ready for league play and was going to go with his best players who were ready, and that is what limited Wilcher's minutes and to a lesser point, Dunlap's. They will get more burn against the remainder of the OOC schedule. As for Alleyne, from Zach's Post article on 11/21:

"I wasn’t surprised to hear Pitino bring up his conversation with Nahiem Alleyne in which the UConn transfer apologized for his play rather than ask for more minutes. Everything you heard about the kid after he committed in the spring is just what a high-character person he is. He doesn’t complain. He didn’t do it last year with the Huskies despite a limited role. You could tell what an impression that made on the Hall of Fame coach, and Alleyne certainly earned his 17 minutes in the win over Utah with his defense — Pitino has said he’s the team’s best perimeter defender — and shot-making. He is going to be a critical depth piece for this team."

I suspect Alleyne has escaped from Rick's doghouse.

I hope that Dunlap develops under RP . I don’t think Rick is giving up on Brady . He took him pretty quickly after he decomitted from ND .

You never want to give up on natural born shooters .

Don't think Rick would give up on anyone... would see it the other way- that a player would give up on Rick...

Given the nature of immediate gratification and with the free transfer- Kids now have the ability to seek a better situation (more PT) without having to sit.

This wouldn't be a topic 10 years ago, and we would be looking forward to seeing Brady produce as a jr/sr.

“Think about this: St. John’s has already faced as many top-100 non-conference opponents this year (four) as the previous two years combined (four). Its two top-100 non-conference wins are one more than the Johnnies managed in the last two seasons.”

The above statement proves our (3-2) start this year is greater than any (5-0) start from the previous regime.

Much too early to give up on anyone on this team or the team itself.
Before the season started an Assistant Coach on the team told me directly that Brady had impressed him the most as being better than his ranking and their expectations. I'm not worried about him at all. He's a freshman and he's going to have a nice career here

If we managed to reel in VJ that might cause Dunlap pause because now you are looking at a second straight season of riding the pines. But I don't know what the conversations between staff, Dunlap, and family were and what expectations for his college career were when committing.

Best thing he can do is hit the weights big time and make himself useful at the 3 and 4 as an upperclassman.

Great news. imho.

These are big boy problems that Pitino and company are paid to navigate.

When blue chip recruits are being recruited over, we are in a great spot.

Hopefully we land VJ and the staff has to figure this rubics cube out.

I have no idea what will happen with Dunlap but I don’t buy the conclusions drawn here; yes he needs to get stronger, most freshman do, but I think he is not playing simply because when given time, he played very tentatively and passively. He needs to show HE thinks he belongs. Way too early to draw conclusions.

This fact is truly concerning

— St. John’s was ranked 341 in non-conference strength of schedule last season and 333 the year before —

I understand Anderson’s desire to play easy teams for his never a losing season record but why did Mr. Cragg go along with it? Did he not see that each season the team went into conference play unprepared?

There was no doubt that Clayton would hsve been a great Player here .. Not much was made of it but , I think RP was very disappointed not to have both, Clayton and Jenkins in his Backcourt this year .

I’m trying to remember if Posh had already decided to transfer out before Clayton had committed to Florida ? Figuring Walter was coming here ?

No matter , it’s just natural to play “ what if ,” on occasion

Wasn't trying to go down the Clayton path again. Was more surprised RP was there.
