Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

To be fair, I don't think many Gen Z'ers are growing up college basketball fans, and it doesn't help that Pitino has been in exile the last six or so years.

I think it will take winning, and making the tournament, to see a noticable difference between year 1 and year 2. They weren't alive for his first Final Four run with Louisville, let alone the Kentucky era.

So true, my son and his friends call all team sports sports ball stuff. And those select few who are hoops/fb fans look to the big boys, for example my nephews who are of the sporting ilk wouldn't consider a non power 5(4?3?) school. One went to Wisconsin, one went to The U.

Perhaps Ricks teams do take a while to jell but I think it’s important that with all of the hype the program has had that this team does fairly well out of the gate. Unfortunately the Pitino haters are out there in numbers waiting to pounce on a poor start.
I agree they'll be better in January & February (they better be as the competition will be tougher) but still expect them to do fine OOC (9-2).

That’s the Pitino hallmark. Heat up late in the year and go on a run

I’m so sick of the 11-1 or 10-2 non conf record only to start 0-3/1-5/2-4 in big East play. We’ve finished the conference above 500 once in the last 8 years…

Schedule is tough for first 2/3 of conference season before mid February with 7 of their 8 games vs. big 4 in first 13. Hope for 6 wins in the last 7 as I anticipate the conference record is somewhere around .500 (6 or 7 conference wins) going into that stretch.

Hahaha let them hate. Rick is soooo smooth.

Rick and the crew is gonna have the joint rocking.

It all begins tomorrow night, and I seriously can't freaking wait.

That's not gonna happen this year.

The bad news is we heard basically the same thing every year under the previous coaching regime.

The good news is, this is the Rick Pitino regime so take it to the bank, we will be dancing this year.
I can see it now, selection Sunday, with CBS showing a live shot of Carnesecca Arena. Soon after “St. John’s” is official, the cheering and applause start, and Dunlap does a “Selection Sunday Dance.”

And the selection committee sees a video of his dance and St. John’s selection is rescinded?😂👍

Yeah studies have shown that Gen Z isn't watching sports as much as the prior gens. I get it in a sense, now people have far more entertainment options with stuff like Netflix and YouTube.

For myself I used to watch the World Series every year but now I never watch baseball on TV unless my team is playing. That said, I think baseball (and other sports) are still fairly popular regionally with younger fans even if they're not tuning in for other teams as much.

It's a changing landscape so there's only so much the school can do, but hiring Pitino was obviously the best decision possible. As someone with younger siblings, my 30 year old brother knew all about Pitino (and my dad saw him coach the Knicks), but my 25 year old sister and her bf / group of her friends never heard of him. He won't get the younger generation invested with just his name, we'll need to win first

That’s because Gen Z thinks anything longer than a 15 clip is too long and takes time away from any of their other 37 social media platforms and accounts.

Now, get off my lawn…

If it makes anyone feel better, I was at the Tennessee/Tennessee Tech game last night and the arena was maybe half full (almost no one in the higher sections). The only clear students there were in each student section behind the basket. Obviously an awesome experience to go to, but it shows that even a top 10 team in the country in Knoxville on a Monday night can't draw a sell out.
