I think Otis first posted this link but definitely worth a repost.
In it CRP speaks about how a friend on Wall Street enlightening him on the concept of working with a one day contract. On Wall Street, one single bad decision can cause a termination, no matter what you previously accomplished.
One thing Rick speaks about is respecting everyone you encounter and listening to what they have to say. It's definitely one of those things that seems very basic, but difficult in practice to execute daily.
After getting to know CRP tiny bit over the past 6 months and being st a bunch of events with him, i can tell you he is absolutely engaging and attentive to anyone who approaches him. He learns and remembers your name. He graciously poses for countless requests for photos and autographs. He is so respectful in his interactions and interestec in what you have to say.
Over the years I've seen Coach C. act in this manner. I introduced my daughter to him once at a dinner, and for the 10 minutes they spoke, you'd have thought she was the celebrity and not him as he peppered with questions ecpressing great interest in her responses.
Jay Wright has this too, and has this gift of immediately finding common ground in a conversation. Real deal as a person and I always say this guy would have been successful doing anything he chose - climb the corporate ladder, politics, tv, etc.
Now, it's self evident but I'd put Rick in this category. As a coach, he fires on all cyllinders, and understands ALL aspects of building a powerhouse program here. His next task is engaging students on campus among a long list of things to rebuild and possibly elevate our program to new heights.
Monday was our annual President's dinner, a fundraising event for student scholarships that raised almost $3.5 million.
We have many incredible alumni, a handful were homored with the Spirit of St John's Award. Solly Walker's impressive granddaughters accepted a posthumous award to him. I was completely unaware that John Bender, an insurance company executive who grew up in Rockaway, founded The St. Baldrick's charity and raised over $300 million to fund pediatric cancer research. Just two examples of the literally thousands of St John's alums who have done great things large and small to make their community, city, country, and world a better place. So many of you fit this category.
I wish every hs kid about to choose a college was present at ths last few days of events. We ARE Sr. John's, a fantastic institution and community.
