Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Is it a Donation to the School or to a Company giving players a NIL? Doesn't really clearly state. NIL would benefit the program and that is what it says...
The FMV part of the price is the value of the dinner and is NOT tax deductible as a donation. So for this evening, of the $1250, only $1005 is a charitable deduction. Strict IRS rules, though it is up to the individual to report as such.

This is a fundraiser towards the athletic department budget. There are capital projects such as creation of a basketball only facility, and operational budgets such as salaries and other operating expenditures that are all greater than revenues produced by all D1 sports that the university offers.

Spoiler alert this guy has St. John's finishing 18 - 13 overall and with a losing in conference record of 9 -11.

I will be surprised if this team with this coach does not win 20 games and does not register a winning conference record finishing. I see StJohn's finishing in 5th place in the Big East regular conference standings but playing very good ball at the end entering the tournament.

I think we are being underestimated in general.

If that occurred would be the low water mark in terms of conf and overall record. It would put us short of an ncaa bid or maybe play in game and that would be a disappointment.

Otis I agree with your outlook. 20 wins, 11-9 in conf and 9-2 OOC feels probable. I think its possible to overshoot that, but no more than a game or 2.

In short 9-13 in conf wins; with 10-12 likely.

I think we discovered the identity of Making Plays.

I'm surprised to see Seton Hall being picked to go 10-10 and to finish ahead of us in the Big East by Bart Torvik. Seton Hall seems to have inverse projections to us - they are projected 25th in defensive efficiency and 96th in offensive efficiency whereas we are projected 90th in defensive efficiency and 32 in offensive efficiency. For context, we were ranked 105th in offensive efficiency last year according to Bart Torvik so it looks like we significantly upgraded our offense. This seems consistent with Pitino's statements that he wanted players who can shoot/score and that he can teach them defense since vice versa is much more difficult. I'm optimistic that Pitino and the staff will teach the team defense and that we'll be much better than the projected 90th in defensive efficiency (for context, last year we were 59th in defensive efficiency according to Torvik and I'm expecting better defense than last year).

I did a bit of a dive into where the teams we are playing in the offseason would be ranked according to Torvik. I assumed we get to play Houston, which obviously is no guarantee, and it looks like:

Stonybrook - 220
Michigan - 56
North Texas - 107
Dayton or LSU?? - 71, 46
Houston?? - #7
Holy Cross - 292
West Virginia - 61
Sacred Heart - #269
Boston College - #99 home
Fordham - #147
Hofstra - Hofstra #122

The Big Six Schedule Awards according to the link/article, our schedule the last five years consisted of:

  • Total non-conference games: 55
  • Top 100 opponents: 10 (18.2%)
  • Quadrant 4 opponents: 34 (61.8%)
My review of this year's schedule has us with 5 opponents in the top 100 if we end playing Houston in Charleston. Only 3 of the games are Q4.

  • Total non-conference games: 11
  • Top 100 opponents: 5 (45.45%) or 4 if we don't play Houston (36.36%)
  • Quadrant 4 opponents: 3 (27.27%)

So we are looking at potentially half as many Q4 opponents (3 "cupcakes" makes a lot more sense than the nearly 7 per year we've been averaging. Plus, a solid bump in the level of Top 100 opponents. Torvik has 6 BE teams in the Top 50 so between out of conference and non-conference, it should be a very solid schedule.

I'm going to refer this post to kranmars and slyfox for questionable non use of paragraphs

LOL, I actually had initially broken it up into a second paragraph after the third sentence but then decided to combine it into one paragraph right before I hit send...should've trusted my first instincts!!
It’s the pre season so compliance with Paragraphing has bern eased for the summer .
21 RedStorm was a more than adequate explanation .
