I chase a fair amount of business and on long shots I think are worth pursuing I always tell people that work for me that if we don’t at least send in a proposal we know what the answer is. Doesn’t come to fruition more than it does but many times there are still benefits to the company in terms of gaining experience, generating out of the box thinking trying to offer creative angles to the offer, etc.

There are a lot of factors that make RP great:
1. He wins
2. He gets guys to the pros
3. He can flat out prepare and game coach
4. He is a master recruiter ans salesperson.

He can sell
1. Big east basketball.
2. NYC media capital, MSG
3. His track record
4. St johns long term history.

In sales you either want to be first in to make an impression, or last in to have the final word.

Rick can be dangerous in any situation where someone seems headed to a different school. He won't waste his time but he will pack his schedule and his staff's to go after any kid who he thinks will fit here.

Clock his ticking but he's been around the block and won't waste time. Competing schools know he is a dangerously good recruiter, and even if they think they have a kid sewn up have good reason to worry.

How does the old sales line go? Something like "you lose 100% of the deals you don't go after."

That is correct.

Problem is those with the agenda post the same thoughts over and over, and leads to a deep line drawn in the sand

I am guilty of that. As an unabashed Pitino fanboy, I will confidently sit back and watch the roster develop. But I believe it is silly for me to post that same thought in 31 different flavors.

It didn’t take long for Rick Pitino to get involved once Mgbako asked out of his Duke letter of Intent. And while Queens isn’t a particularly likely landing spot for the five-star forward, nobody should be ruling out one of the sport’s best recruiters when it comes to a New Jersey kid.

Mgbako attended New Jersey's Gill St. Bernard’s Schools, which sits just 70 miles away from St. John’s New York campus. Pitino has the pedigree, and the Red Storm is armed with a nice NIL weapon in the form of billionaire booster Mike Repole, who has signaled his intention to help the team win immediately. Counting Pitino out isn’t wise, even if Mgbako-to-St. Johns is a bit of a long shot.
