I remember the All American meal at McDonald'sYep, .50 cents and subway tokens were .15 cents. At the Pizza shop on 169th St and Hillside you could get a slice and soda for .25. Those were some great days. Amazing, for less than $1.00, you had an amazing time.
Some of the video is absurd.
He was MVP of this u20 event (league?). The defensive potential stood out to me. And of the offensive end, aside from the skills, it is obvious he understands the game. Look how well he moves and finds space without the ball
Or go to jpods first for nickel beers then hit the big beersHow about having $10 in your pocket and hitting Friday afternoon Big Beer Happy Hours at Gantrys...then leaving a "few" hours later with plenty of money in your pocket to stop at Ed's Pizza...those were the days
Expecting somewhat of a learning curve, it excites me almost more for the year 2 potential when Joel is gone. Both him and Zuby, as you’ve said before will have a lot to learn defensively and scheme wise. A year in a non major role could be huge for that. And a front court of this guy and Zuby at the 4/5 is PLENTY of size. We’ve had some stretch 4 v traditional PF debates over the years, but this is the kind of player that makes me salivate at the 4.
Legitimate wing skills…excellent spatial awareness and use of angles (assuming soccer background here). His body control for 6’9-6’10 is absurd.
If you had to design a 4 to play next to Joel it would be this kid + 10 to 15 lbs.
What did Jpod’s go to RJ’s and then Safari Bar if I remember correctly? Good times.Or go to jpods first for nickel beers then hit the big beers
... just lacking experience (and weight) at our level.Reminds me a bit of a smaller Kristaps Porzingis which is high praise in deed. Arguably would be our most talented player just lacking experience at our level.
St. John’s use to have Rathskeller or the “rat” as we use to call. Nickel beer Friday was a thing until the drinking age in NYS went from 18-19 and ultimately to 21.Or go to jpods first for nickel beers then hit the big beers
At that time it was about a different player, now it's about two others potentially, on top of our 2024 commit from Greece. Rick has not put all his eggs in one proverbial countries basket...this is far more calculated, as we should expect. I think it took them a few weeks to get acclimated to the climate of the portal and NIL but then they got their sea legs under them and zoomed. This is funWorth noting there was a lot of chatter about a European big coming as far back as a month ago. When all the scholarships filled up it was assumed that it had fizzled. This last move seems connected to that original chatter now.
I had more than ten floor tickets for that game and the SJU game . As a student in Brooklyn night school it was easy to getGreat find!! I still have my program from that Holiday Festival.
Nedics ??The sporting store was Davega’s. There was also a mens Adams hat store and a Neficis hot dog stand.
Totally forget. My senior year it was jpods and gantry’s can’t remember after thatWhat did Jpod’s go to RJ’s and then Safari Bar if I remember correctly? Good times.
I had pretty good seats for the Michigan/SJU final (being only a freshman, I have no idea how I got them), and was amazed when I saw Michigan take the floor for the shoot-around. They were built like Big 10 football players. Meanwhile our guys, especially soph Sonny Dove, looked like kids next to them. Nevertheless, a great game, a great win, and a great memory. Thanks for posting this Ray, 1964-65 was truly an amazing year for college basketball. I was a senior in high school that year and made the trip to the Old Madison Square Garden as often as possible. Watched St Johns beat Villanova for the NIT Championship. Ken McIntyre was my favorite player on that team.
Princeton beat a Providence team with two friends of mine, Jimmy Walker and Dexter Westbrook to reach the Final Four in 1965 by 40 points. Bill Bradley was an other worldly talent in college.
I also remember sneaking into Alumni Hall to watch the 1964 Olympic Team tryouts. It was an amazing time, had some fantastic experiences during mu youth.
Does anyone remember the name of the Sporting Goods store underneath the Old Garden?
Marty Glickman, who called Knicks games on the radio, would shout out whenever a Knick made a basket (which wasn't often in those days): "Good ... like Nedick's!"Nedics ??
In 1963, my junior year of high school, I was 15 years old. One of my classmates got a bunch of us fake draft cards which was an accepted form of ID back then. I used it until I finally turned 18 after my freshman year of college.St. John’s use to have Rathskeller or the “rat” as we use to call. Nickel beer Friday was a thing until the drinking age in NYS went from 18-19 and ultimately to 21.
The night of the law change at midnight a bunch of us were kicked out of JPods. The bars claimed they were afraid of “midnight compliance“ checks.
No worries. As people may recall NYS still had the old picture less license. Which meant my older brother who was 2 years older went in first. One of our other buddies would slip out 10 minutes later and give me my brothers license and boom in the bar we were. NVM that my brother was two inches taller and had blue eyes. Hey it was dark out!
Come to think of it, this Portuguese kid (if he comes here) might have to get use to the drinking laws here. Just to keep this on topic. I hope he comes.
