Rick’s Targets

Great start(my thoughts, if anybody cares to follow soon) but when this is over fan base will be happy. Some PLAYERS coming.
So when are they coming? That post was April 16, 11 days later who do we have?
3 Iona players, 1 VMI player, and Alleyne?
So maybe Alleyne and Jenkins will make us happy? Really hope Rick coaches them up big time and gets the most out of each.

It's turning into a disaster. You want to say oh Rick only been here a month, well Rick would be the first to tell you that he thought he'd do a better job recruiting, so whatever.

People want to give him a pass because he's only been here a month then yeah whatever, but this can't happen next off season otherwise just maybe it is ST. John's more then Rick Pitino which is why they aren't coming.

Overreact much? Jiminy Crickets. Post this next season when we have a trash team. Everything he is doing is planning to recruit heavy next year. A bunch of 1 year students that have come in. Also, these other schools have been on these players for months if not years.

Honestly I'd take Pitino as coach for the rest of his life. He is probably the best coach ever to coach at SJU.

While we wait for additional commits , let’s do a brief review of who has committed to date .

First , there is Jenkins from Iona . Rick has commented that Daniss would probably have started for him at L’ville . And , other Coaches have said he can definitely play in the BE and was not a typical MAAC player . So , chalk up a high quality addition .

Next , Alleyne from UCONN , a sold contributor to their season and Championship . He played for VA Tech before that and anyone who watched know he can play and will be a big contributor next season .

Cruz from Iona , a good player who was hurt early in the season which hampered him somewhat . He averaged 6-7 points a game and probably would have played more if not recovering from the injury .

Slazinski , from Iona ,was averaging double figures until injured and will be a significant contributor next season . Remember he transferred from L’ville and is not chopped liver .

The next commit is the kid from VMI. Acknowledged to be a good shooter . Sean Conway . Every team can use shooters .

Still in the Pipe line is Noah Thommasson from Niagara . Appears the only wait is for him to honor his pledge to visit all 5 schools he selected before committing . A noble trait of his . He’s a player and scorer .

Yes , we are waiting on some kids who have visited this week and time will tell their status .

All up, I think it’s more than decent roster . If we look at teams that did well in the Tournament , many had transfers and mid majors in their lineups or , kids that didn’t play much at their initial schools . Older players 23, 24 , etc are more experienced to College Ball than the 18, 19 year old . It helps .

I’m confident as the Roster fills , we will put a competitive team on the floor in November .

Also, again, we have RICK PITINO. Even if the talent is "subpar" compared to expectations, we will have the coaching advantage in every matchup we have this season. In my 31 years of watching St. John's, that's never been the case. We will outperform our talent regardless.

I can say I'm anxious about the roster filling out, but it's coming more from excitement than anything else.

Decent roster...competitive team. That'll get us out of the NCAA picture next year, for sure. I'm glad Rick is giving mid-major players a chance, but anyone who follows baseball can tell you someone who hits .325 in AAA ball doesn't necessarily project to .325 in the majors.

Some of us expected Pitino to make a major splash upon his arrival. I know I did. We've had a number of outstanding players visit...then leave without signing. Maybe NIL is the reason. I don't know. I know legends like Boeheim, Coach K, and others looked at the landscape and left. Maybe Pitino is behind the curve. It might be time to swallow his pride and go after recruits who had signed with us...and some of the, dare I say, players who are still around.

Don't be hating on me. I've followed this team passionately since Sonny Dove and I were freshmen. My doctor tells me not to buy green bananas so forget the patience argument. We have some players still around who can get us to the dance. Who we have now won't.

Let's not forget the biggest recruit- Joel. Rick convinced him to stay... that is looking huge right now. He would have garnered a lot of $$$ on the open market.

It will be refreshing when the season starts, cause at that point- when it comes to in-game decision making, questioning/comments from this board will hold little weight when one of the best to ever do it is calling the shots.

I agree to disagree with you.

First, many marginal minor leaguers come to the bigs and blown the doors off of everything!

Second, I'm about your age and I just had a banana this morning that I bought slightly green a couple of days ago. Meaning, alway have hope that tomorrow will come and it will be a brighter day!

Once more, Rick Pitino is the coach and not you, me, sjc88, mjmaherjr, Boo, SSG, Fizzy, Otis, Knight etc. There's a reason for that. We're not as knowledgeable nor do we have the many years of experience that he has.

Let's talk in December when BE play begins.

Kranmars, How's that for paragraphs? 😜

Of course, we'll agree to disagree. That's what the boards are for.

Pitino is the coach, not me. I'm not as knowledgeable nor do I have the experience. We can say the same about Norm Roberts. I got on Norm's case from the beginning because history virtually always repeats. He had a losing record as a coach before he got here. Same with Mahoney. Anderson never had a losing record...and he didn't have one with us, either. The schedule had something to do with it.

When Pitino got to the Celtics, he got ride of nine players to sign a pie in the sky guy...and the Celts never recovered.

Pitino didn't want Bernard King around because he wanted to rehab in private. That probably cost the Knicks a championship since they had Jackson and Ewing.

So here we are. I'm hoping Pitino isn't going to be the biggest disappointment since Alcindor went to UCLA...or Filipe Lopez and Zendon Hamilton signed with us. The latter two had outstanding careers...but we pretty much sucked as usual.

Yes Sly a competitive team AND a well coached team. “Take that to the bank”. CRP only knows one way = hard work and determination.
All the best

Paragraphs?
If the NY Times published stories with that many paragraphs each daily would be 200 pages and the planet would be benuded of trees!

As for Newsies positive outlook, it's not who Pitino signs with the first 4 scholarships but who he signs with the last four.
As for mid-major madness, please be reminded that our gang that couldn't shoot straight and that played the worst defense in decades at St. John's couldn't make ONE post season while FDU went to the round of 32.

I hear the years of frustration that often dictates projecting more of the same. It makes sense after all these years to see the dark side coming, but to be clear Pitino is not Norm Roberts, Mahoney, Anderson, Lavin, Mullin or Jarvis. He has been pretty successful in all of his college gigs. It is too early to judge anything yet, the roster is still being built, there are still a number of irons in the fire and even when the roster is completed it will be difficult to assess how the roster pieces will gel and perform together on the court.

The era of the transfer portal has altered the way we evaluate talent. Who here on this board was saying that Souley Boum coming from UTEP was going to make Xavier a force last year or Baylor Scheierman was going to go from South Dakota State to Creighton and be a main reason why they were nationally ranked last season. Let's not forget that last year's Big East player of the year was Tyler Kolek. I don't remember any projections of greatness for him when he transferred from George Mason to Marquette a couple of years back. The truth is there is far more here that is unknowable then there is anything that is knowable at this point. For me I will be in wait and see mode until we have played a bunch of games next season.

Nobody big is coming this year. If that’s not completely obvious to everyone then they are drinking too much kool aid or just aren’t that great with pattern recognition.

We’ll have a bizarrely experienced group led by arguably the greatest coach in the last 50 years. That might be enough to make things fun and win 19 games or so while they line up stuff to get better recruits next year.

I am highly emotional. I am so proud, I shed a tear.

Nah, I'm not overreacting at all.

These other schools were on players for years, how did these schools know which players were going to transfer from a mid major years in advance. I'm talking transfers not h.s. recruits.

Yeah, I was vocal on getting Rick pitino, if anyone could coach up avg players, it's him.
I am disappointed that we couldn't get any impact players though, having those help alot.
