Revamped Big East

If that happens and BYU is football school #12, the question is does the BE (a) look to add Memphis and Temple for both sports, thus bringing football to 14 and also upgrading the league's basketball profile (as opposed to NOT adding Memphis and Temple); (b) look to add 2 basketball-only schools or (c) stand pat.

IMHO standing pat is not good enough from a hoops standpoint. Adding Memphis and Temple would seem to be a no-brainer. Both want to come, you still have 2 open spots if the league ever wants to go to 16 (ND and Nova?) and you need to do something to improve the basketball side since none of the incoming teams are remotely in the neighborhood of Pitt, WVU and Syracuse.

If they decide to go basketball only they then need to think really big and go after Gonzaga and Butler.

I never even thought BYU was a major factor anyway. Always talked about BYU/AF.

SMU, Central Florida and Houston joining as all-sports members, possibly by the end of this week, according to two leading college officials.

Good. Hopefully the first step to adding some semblance of stability. Just wish SMU was a football-only and either Temple or Memphis an all-sports member.

Key words: deck chairs, Titanic, rearrange.

In other words, is keeping UConn around for the next two or three years tops really worth bringing in some of the BCS's most mediocre basketball programs?

If AQ becomes history, bowl games will be in the control of the bowl committees once again so the ACC and Big East will be back to fighting for basketball supremacy again without the football factor since the ACC sucks in football just a littlle less than the Big East.
The ACC raided the BE to weaken its hold on basketball supremacy and not for additional schools to enhance AQ BCS bullcrapolla. The Big East needs to add Memphis and Temple to maintain BB as its signature sport. It will never be football. Unless John Calipari moves to Syracuse or Stoors in the next 2 years, do not count those programs as basketball powers after their coaches retire....especially Syracuse.
As for the football schools, they need to get the TV rights over any departing schools like in the SEC since it would make leaving the conference monetarily unfeasible. The $10 million exit fee is useless.

Boise, San Diego State, Houston, Univ. Central Florida, and SMU to the Big East.

Now for basketball...

I'm guessing Boise said yes about 2 seconds after the BCS drawings came out the other night.

And, to be clear, it's Bosie and SDSU for football only. Houston, UCF, and SMU for all sports. Apparently not happening until 2013, so I wonder what the conference is going to look like next season.

What happens to these school's basketball programs? Do they become independent? Do they stay in their current conferences?

Which schools?

The school that entered for football only...

I believe Boise has a deal with the WAC or the WCC, I get them confused, to place all of their "Olympic" sports, which is everything other than basketball, and I think SDSU has the same deal.

I would have been fine with SDSU for all sports. With or without that, the BE needs to go get Temple and Memphis for all sports now or 2 suitable basketball-only schools or the basketball conference will be severely weakened.

I agree with you entirely. But nothing I've heard or read suggests Marinatto is looking to add any basketball-only schools. Which is a shame. The conference needs to replace Pitt and Cuse. A basketball power like Memphis, Temple, or Xavier would be great - but football is king. And that's whats driving all this realignment mess to begin with.

I just hope this keeps UCONN comfortable. Because if they bolt - the party's over.

If Uconn bolts they would be in the Big East until at least 2015. Uconn's value to the ACC is basketball. Does anyone here see Calhoun coaching into his mid 70s?? I do not think so.

I think the ACC really got more than they bargained for with Cuse. Their football stinks and averages 32k fans per game and Boeheim won't be around much longer. They also have an active bball scandal. Good luck to them. Ey cut themselves off from e big east and MSG. Hope their fans enjoy traveling to florida, SC, Georgia for every game. The ACC has done wonders for BC...lol.

They want to solidify football which is fine. The utmost importance is maintaining a marketable conference for TV. The basketball side will be fine and take care of itself.

It comes down to territorial rights:

Louisville does not want Memphis in thee BEast
Sincinnati does not want Xavier in the BEast
Rutgers does not want Temple football in the BEast
Boston College does not want Yukon in the ACC

Good thing NC ST, UNC, Wake and Duke did not have that mindset or there would not have been an ACC. That said.....those schools still ARE the ACC! LOL!

MC, I am not sure if they are solidifying football or not but I am sure of one thing......Marinatto is weakening the basketball side of the equation with only Houston as a marketable brand in BB while we lose Cuse, Pitt and WV.

I would add Temple and Memphis even if it means a megalopolis conference UNLESS Louisville, Uconn, Rutgers and Cincy sign iron-clad agreements not to leave for the next 5 years.

Weakening the bball side, but only for now. They will be bolstered by the Big East bball league though. Look at it this way, what is so different from Houston and SMU from say a Baylor or Texas A&M ? Not much difference between SMU, Houston and much of the Big 12. Each team just needs to have strong coaches, and within a few years will be assimilated into the bball league a bit more seamlessly than many think. Houston has a strong hoops history with more final 4's than we do and a NC appearance.

Strengthening the football side of things and hopefully the money TV deals hopefully will keep everybody on board and maybe add more tomthe puzzle. I don't understand why people are worried about the bball side of this being weakened by ate am or two. Those programs will be augmented by the league and will be competitive before long.

If the ville doesn't want Memphis in the BE then why was Pitino quoted as saying he thinks we should add Memphis and Temple to strengthen the bball profile of the conference?

I don't think the rest of the ACC gives a rats as* about what BC thinks. If the conference wants yukon they'll go after them regardless of what their yankee second cousins think.

UCF just landed transfer Calvin Newell from Oklahoma. I think UCF is going to be pretty successful in the Big East. The coach is landing talent. By what means I'm not sure, but they'll be competitive.

In other news, Big East per several twitter sources, considering renaming the conference at meeting today.
