Repole on the radio

Just listened to the whole interview. Repole sounds like a guy on the outside. He said he is in the founder's club but not sure what that is. He said he wrote a $100,000 check to refurbish the locker rooms and that's certainly nice. The. He said he would pay $10 million of the $20 million upgrade to CA, but unlike Villanova's donor there was no pledge and no check.

He is right that there is ineot leadership, but by trashing the BOT and Gempeshaw it is clear he is not on the inside at all. He didn't break from these guys, he was never part of these guys.

Francesa saying he broke from st John's 10 years ago is crap. Other than mc the presidents dinner a few times, he did squat for the school, and the last 3 times he did it he committed late, showed up late, once in a crumpled brown jacket at a black tie affair. They went to Bruce beck, who unlike francesa was always prepared.

Calling for Bobby to be fired, and trashing the board at the same time (the guys who could fire bobby) makes zero sense.

Hes right about Hurley though. To get him would have cost $3-4 million. One thing he didn't say was that he offered to write the check. In fact he stayed far away from the process. Guarantee, if he walked in with a $20 million check, and said "dont let money be an object, let's get our man", it could have been different. Instead he is saying the school cheaped out, but didn't say he offered.

Gonna say, like many uber successful guys, schools court them to get them to donate big. The Life I'd Good guys ignored Villanova. The owner of the Tampa bay rays told Sju not to bother him. Repole git a lot of attention but the only big donation I'm aware of is thec100k in this conversation. Most board members have been generous in the 7 to 8 figure range - one guy gave a $ 10 million Christmas gift to the school with no strings.

Repole may be 100% correct about inept decision mb making for a coach. In fact I think he is. But hi early seems a lot more upset that he isnt part of the decision.

I couldn’t care less what he has or has not donated. He had the platform and used it. Agree or disagree with him but he spoke passionately and truthfully from his and many others points of view. And frankly, why shouldn’t he want to be on the “inside” and influencing decisions with the history of debacle after debacle? Hell, I’d like to be, and I guarantee I could do a better job than these buffoons. I have interviewed and hired many people for significant leadership positions and I know basketball. I am sure Repole has done the same 100 times more than I have. Take the personal politics and agendas out and this is not rocket science.

Of course he does and if course you do.
But don't be so sure you could do a better job. 3 university presidents, several ADs, and board members with far more career success than any of us have failed.

Beast, with all due respect, I think you are over complicating a very clear and simple issue. There is mass dysfunction that stinks from the head. If Gempshaw wanted to save money and Oliva wants to call the shots, they could have left the AD position vacant. That would have killed two birds (and a program) with one stone

Personally, I could care less about whether Repole donated "enough" or acted the right way when he did. This program will be a joke until there is a shake up at the top.

So what? Many incompetent people have had “success” as you appear to define it. I know what I can do because I have proved it to the only person that matters in that regard, me.

Don't piss off the owner of ****ing Vitamin Water and BodyArmor when he's a proud alumni of your school. That's all that needs to be said.

Beast, IMHO this kind of thinking is why St. John's has been such a mom & pop failure for the last many years. I suspect there are many contributors to this board who have had more success than this pathetic excuse for a board/executive team and are more than qualified to criticize incompetence when they see it. Cragg is the school's chance to be relevant rather than a complete embarrassment ; SJU athletics should embrace the idea of learning from Duke. Why wouldn't you want to learn from success?

So tired of hearing from apologists on the state of this God forsaken program and Administration.

On a side note: I literally got no work done today -- I've been on the site nonstop. I anticipate that will no longer be the case with Norm 2.0 as coach though.

I had a friend text me asking me if I heard the interview and sent me a link. I told him I hadn’t but saiid I am sure “He ripped the circus sideshow that is St. John’s and the mess that is the basketball program is.” He responded I was right.

After listening to it I realized I understated it. We were ripped right in the big top for everyone to see. Good for him.

I have been basically silent with a few comments about other things other than this whole coaching fiasco. There is plenty of blame to go around among Cragg, Oliva and Gempesaw but this reads like a something out of a Stephen King novel.

The same school who makes a big deal about a new practice facility that was poorly designed overall and outdated in a year, built with poor materials and questionable workmanship, built a soccer field with donated money next to a baseball field that was paid for by the City as a temporary home for the Brooklyn Cyclones but couldn't build a decent facility between them to house decent locker rooms for the soccer and baseball team along with offices, still has that same dysfunctional, small can’t get out of there own way mentality.

You don’t do a national search and bring in an AD and then not let him do one of the biggest part of his job, deciding who should run your only revenue and supposed flag ship sport. And as an AD if you are not going to give an extension to a legend, you have to have a back up plan with a list f candidates who you are reasonably sure who accept the position if you make a real competitive offer just in case the legend walks. Whether you think Chris should have been treated better and not “let go” or not, the fact is this whole process was handled poorly from the start (again why I feel all three mentioned in my first paragraph are culpable for this train wreck of a program right now.

Congratulations guys. At least DePaul has a nice relatively new arena that they can call home. We can’t even rehab CA right.

All this and I agree with the poster (sorry forgot who) who doesn’t think any of this will change a thing. The only thing I see is Cragg leaving a year from now and not looking back and four years from now another coaching search will begin with us being worst off than we were at the end of this year.

Oh great, I have YES on the TV and a St. John’s commercial just came on. Someone is rapping about feeling the energy and feeling the sport and the commercial shows several teams with Men’s basketball being featured the longest. The last line is “The support has no ending because St. John’s is all about winning.” I don’t know wether to laugh or cry.

Cold, awful take. He said they were afraid of him. He tried to be as classy as an upset passionate psycho sju fan can be (like many of us on here). I’ve heard reliably he was willing to fit most of the bill for a big name coach, he did not bring that up because he doesn’t have too nor perhaps its shaky with NCAA regs. Regardless, if the President or Board isn’t responsible then who is? Lavin? Good for Repole. Shake these stiffs up. Money is not an excuse obviously. Make a ballsy hire.

The problem is, you've got the school's largest donor stating publicly that the school's president and right hand man don't support the basketball program the way they should, will not let the school's athletic director do his job properly, and are generally creating a toxic environment for all.

Unless I'm desperate for a new coaching gig, I'm staying far away from that scene.
Tim Cluess, because he’s desperate to get, finally, his dream job. He may be insane, but I love and respect his loyalty.

He's not even close to being the school's top donor. Not to belittle even a $25 donor, but it's not repole.
Pretty sure we saw some of the reasons why. Repole has the money do be so for sure.
Not to throw water on this, but I'd gotten inferences that Repole really doesn't know how to buy influence at a University. YOu don't make a million dollar donation and say if I give you this, will you let my kid in. You make your donations, and then when it comes time, you get preferential treatment that can get a kid who might get passed over in.

It's the same with influence. You make your big donations, and then you get put on committees, boards of lesser note, and then moved up to Board of Governors, and then Board of Trustees. You don't make a donation with the stipulation that you want to direct an activity, like who they choose as coach. A few years ago a staffer inferred that Repole never made a big donation to the school, because he put strings on his donation, and that's just not the way it works.

So now by this interview, while he may know stuff about what's going on, it's clear he is a disgruntled outsider that likely for now at least burned a bridge ever to be one of those people that influence decisions at SJU.

Clearly if Repole was on the inside of this s- show, he would be influence and not sharing his frustration on talk radio. He can't just say even privately, I'll give you $5 million if you hire so and so. Even then the stakes have changed. $5 million would even come close to the $20-30 million it would cost on a 6 year guaranteed to secure a top name coach.

I identify with his frustration and like many of you, am happy he said it, but I don't think this helped him one bit to influence the decision on the next coach.
Seems to me Beast that, in this case, you’re dissecting the dissident and leaving the apparatchik- bureaucracy unscathed.
Just sayin’.
