Repole on the radio

I realize their are many aspects to running a University outside of basketball. However, The Board is directly responsible. The President is the mouthpiece. BG is the President. Where the hell is he?

His primary function as President is to control the narrative. This is an important asset and a great marketing tool and money maker for the school. On the street they all look like a ship of fools. All these business people, all these lawyers and all these smart people can’t figure this out? It’s an embarrassment. Jobs should be lost over at Utopia Parkway.

This was eye-opening and I love Repole's enthusiasm. Seems like he has spent a TON of money trying to help us and Bobby & Oliva are blocking progress. Repole and Cragg stay, everyone else needs to go.

Now all these lesser mid major coaches are turning us down hahaha! And for very good reason.

The administration really ****ed this up. Make Mike Repole president.

It's pretty amazing that after the whole disaster of a search that we will end up with Pitino anyway.

Exactly the kind of coach we need here. Someone who sees the potential to make us great again(MSJUGA!) and has balls and the work ethic to get the job done. Not for the faint of heart.
The problem is, you've got the school's largest donor stating publicly that the school's president and right hand man don't support the basketball program the way they should, will not let the school's athletic director do his job properly, and are generally creating a toxic environment for all.

Unless I'm desperate for a new coaching gig, I'm staying far away from that scene.
He's not even close to being the school's top donor. Not to belittle even a $25 donor, but it's not repole.
Pretty sure we saw some of the reasons why. Repole has the money do be so for sure.
Not to throw water on this, but I'd gotten inferences that Repole really doesn't know how to buy influence at a University. YOu don't make a million dollar donation and say if I give you this, will you let my kid in. You make your donations, and then when it comes time, you get preferential treatment that can get a kid who might get passed over in.

It's the same with influence. You make your big donations, and then you get put on committees, boards of lesser note, and then moved up to Board of Governors, and then Board of Trustees. You don't make a donation with the stipulation that you want to direct an activity, like who they choose as coach. A few years ago a staffer inferred that Repole never made a big donation to the school, because he put strings on his donation, and that's just not the way it works.

So now by this interview, while he may know stuff about what's going on, it's clear he is a disgruntled outsider that likely for now at least burned a bridge ever to be one of those people that influence decisions at SJU.

Clearly if Repole was on the inside of this s- show, he would be influence and not sharing his frustration on talk radio. He can't just say even privately, I'll give you $5 million if you hire so and so. Even then the stakes have changed. $5 million would even come close to the $20-30 million it would cost on a 6 year guaranteed to secure a top name coach.

I identify with his frustration and like many of you, am happy he said it, but I don't think this helped him one bit to influence the decision on the next coach.
I don't know squat about being a big donor to a school(I'm a very small donor to a number of schools), but if I was going to contribute a good chunk of my hard earned money towards the hiring of a new coach, you damn best believe that I'd want at least a seat at the table when the options were being discussed. Especially when I knew that the decision makers were incompetent. And while, according to you, Repole isn't the biggest donor to the basketball program, he sure as hell seems like a pretty big one and one of the most passionate. If there's bigger donor(s), then that guy(s) is pissing his money away by handing it over to the clowns who decide what to do with it. The school needs him way way more than he needs the school. Sounds to me like they're the ones that don't understand how the game is played. Sorry beast, without knowing all the facts, siding with Repole 110% on this one.

This is the only thread I have read from start to finish. This after sitting in my car outside a store listening intently to this interview.
I felt like Repole was one of us unleashing years of frustration with the way this school has run the basketball program. I felt with Cragg coming on board change was coming. We and Cragg by now know, nothing has changed. The few on here who did not think this was long overdue help contribute to keeping things the same, are also the problem. This was a pr disaster, are you kidding, this program has been a disaster. Think of the last 25 years of students who have no idea what it’s like to watch year in year out a winning program. Imagine what it’s like to have your coworkers and friends bringing up the team to you and discussing the team with you in a positive light. That would happen all the time, you couldn’t help but feel proud. We got a glimpse into the inner workings behind the facade and it’s exactly what many of us felt.
Thank you Mike Repole, it’s time for us to demand change.

Speaking of anomalies, which this incredible episode is brimming with, when’s the last time you heard wailing and the gnashing of teeth from a millionaire whistleblower?

Sorry, Beast. When you have a billionaire donor with high interest in one of your programs, you find a way to cultivate a relationship and make it work. That's how the game is played. I am sure all the power programs have big time donors with even bigger egos. You make it work and use the $upport to grow your program.

That's the deal and if Joe and Bobby don't like it, they need to get out of the way.

I've never been a Mike Francesa fan. I have always felt that he was a blowhard and an egomaniac. But kudos to him for bringing Mike Repole on his show and for allowing him to speak freely about his feelings about St John's and the basketball program.

Things will probably be bleak once again for awhile. Here's hoping that Repole's comments will serve as a springboard to better times ahead for our university and basketball program.

Thanks Mr. Repole for all that you have done for St John's and for your passion for the school. I hope that you will continue to be a strong voice and a driving force behind a renaissance for our school and program in the future.

Clearly then all the other big donors just willingly and blindly hand their hard earned money over to the incompetent decision makers, and sit back and watch the mismanagement of their contributions. Repole sounds smarter than all of them for wanting to be involved in how his money is utilized.

The problem unfortunately is this will get play tomorrow than disappear locally during Easter wekend and eventually everything Repole said will be forgotten outside of the forums and whatever loyal fans are left.

I don't know if Francesa ever had a guest speak with more passion or frustration. Repole bleeds SJU

Not sure about that with reports that James Jones from Yale is our new Head Coach. Revenge of Bobby G and Oliva?

Thank you, Mike, long, long, overdue. This school has been grossly mismanaged ever since Harrington and his joy boys were running the place.

This is kind of like the NR situation all over again but in that case the donor who blew a fit had already committed millions to the university and was a board member. I don't believe Repole ever has, but I don't know for sure. My guess is had he done so he'd already be on the BOT.

He was a commencement speaker and it's possible a donation preceded or proceeded after that but 8 just dont think there's any real involvement on his part. Others here would know.

I can't remember if I thanked the original post -- I probably did -- but Beast is right. If I had to bet money on it, Repole likely has the largest net worth of anyone connected with the school, but he doesn't strike me as someone who will donate $75 million for a building. If he was happy I'm sure we'd have a really well-funded athletic department and a good coach. But his wallet stays shut until Bobby and Oliva are gone.

Repole reminded me of Ricky Roma destroying Williamson because he cost Roma a big commission and new Cadillac after he blew the Lingk deal. Brutal undressing of the clueless leadership.
