Red White Game

We had six guys in double digits!

Looks like we'll be surprising some people this year!
We had 2 teams of our guys and only 6 men per team so actually 6 in double figures is kind of low. Nice to see a 32 pt scorer.

Main man = sarcasm. You know that. C'mon Man!

I deserve that but I did suspect sarcasm but also figured I would point it out for the uninitiated.

Positive in leaner Amar but negative in no apparent increase in muscle mass. Stamina is great in a big but you need to bang in side and we are not frontcourt rich at the moment.

One of my biggest takeaways that I'm surprised most people didnt mention was Greg St. Jean. He was coaching his ass off out there. From the people I spoke to he really has the respect of the players. Likely due to his closeness in age. This person saw many practices under Dunlap as well and says they are very similar. They see the plays they run in practice out there on the floor and in the past that wasn't so much the case.

Personally I loved the ball movement and the concise decision making. There wasn't futzing around and wasting time. Aimless dribbling etc. Everyone had a purpose with the ball. They were thinking ahead to when they received the pass and yes there were a couple passes that were too early or telegraphed but in time that will get better I'm sure.

Slice was doing a nice job as well. His team won.

Actually, the coaches switched off at halftime. Slice coached the white team in the first half, and the red team in the second. Vice versa for St. Jean. So, he actually did win the game, since his team won both halves (white team was up 13 at intermission).

I dont remember this being the case.

Agree with moose, st jean impressed me, team ran some solid sets.

I don't know if this was mentioned but Jones had 15 rebounds. We sure could use him if Williams is not recovered.Williams stats were un impressive. Sure keeping my fingers crossed re, Lovetts eligibility.

Williams looked like more of an outside player than somebody who' gonna be in the paint.

The ball movement was impressive especially for a group of newcomers. Hopefully it carries over to real games.

Never thought I'd say this, but I miss the sick athleticism that Lavin's teams had, especially since I have been calling for the need for 3 point shooters for years. That's the trade off, as it's tough to get both. Good thing was the ball movement and of course the outside shooting. Not sure where the rebounding will come from. Have to accept that there will be some difficult stretches this year. The by-product of the cupboard left bare, and not enough time to fill it. Great job by staff to get us competitive for this year, and finding some real building blocks for the next 4 seasons.

I think that top to bottom this team is as athletic as lavins team. Lovett quicker than anybody, Ellison is as good of an athlete out there. Yakwe,Sima both tremendous athletes for guys their size.

Remember you had Phil and Dlo getting 35 minutes a game. They were not elite athletes. Dom and rysheed, yea they were as good as it gets.

We didn't do that much w our athletes. Ill take players who can get the ball in the hoop.

The difference in style was very evident in the scrimmage. I will have no problem with the new style but adding a player with Alkins type athleticism would be fun.

Couldn't agree more with your second paragraph. Certain things on the floor are non-negotiable, irrespective of talent. Getting to the opposite corner every time there is a baseline drive. Others are not required but preferred, aided by talent. Trail action from a shooter on the secondary break. Good spacing doesn't magically appear, it's developed over thousands of individual and group repetitions. Part of frustration under prior regime was lack of consistency in both categories, and you didn't need to be at a practice to know the discipline wasn't happening. Don't need to be at a practice or watch more than Saturday to know that it is now. Not making more out of it than it is, but these are the things you should be able to see no matter red/white in November or @Nova in March, and it was great to see them.

Suppose it's obvious given how thin we are up front, but too bad we don't get Owens right away. Long, active, fluid for a big.

We have to put all of this into the context that this is an entirely new team and mega young team. Hearing that our style of play meaning ball movement, spacing, passing etc is that good at this early stage is very encouraging. While we might miss Lavin's teams athleticism, I think this style translates better to wins over the long term. In addition, we on,y had one round of recruits thus far. I suspect our athleticism will also improve over future recruiting classes. We were both lucky and fortunate to have excellent recruiting assistants wrangle this class together.

As most have said, it might be a mediocre year, but sounds like we are ahead of the curve building this team.
