Red White Game

CJ with possibly more rebounds in this game than in his entire St. John's career combined.

He needs to give us something this year, so hopefully different staff works in his favor. 4 rpg from him would have me doing cartwheels down Union Turnpike. But I guess I'm happy with anything that isn't 1.2 rpg.

Mvouika- Hit 3-4 threes but didnt do much else. Not the quickest player so I wonder how his defense will be, got blown by a few times. If he can hit shots and be a leader than that is a great addition.

Didn't see the game no not sure how he was used, but I'm always in favor of a slower guy who can shoot occasionally being deployed at PF just to see if we can exploit a mismatch.

Would like to see Lovett not shoot as many 3's and get more high percentage shots.

@rumbleSBN: St. John's Red/ White scrimmage - highlights of the brand-new squad's open scrimmage + recruits in the house. #sjubb

Williams had another surgery in the summer I was told so he's a little behind the curve. He can clearly shoot but seemed a step or two behind at times.

Wondering how long its going to take me to shake this headache and my ears to stop ringing. When you have so few people you don't need the PA announcer to scream and blast music.

Some take aways-

3 Up/3Down

UP

1. Johnson is THE Guy on the team. Attacked on offense. Poised. Shot very well. Agressive. Played under control. Looked very seasoned and comfortable which is to be expected after his time spent playing in the 2nd best conference (ACC).

2. Lovett. He is the real deal. Shot poorly from 3. Turned it over more than you would like to see But did almost everything else at an elite level. Great vision. Speed/quickness on defense which will be vital in BE play. pull up jumper looked better than I expected. can single handedly put pressure on opposing D whether zone or man

3. Shooters. I've been following the program since I was in middle school in The late 90's. I Don't ever remember seeing a St Johns team with this many shooters. We have about 6 guys who can drain it from deep consistently. Will make us very difficult to defend especially with our guards and penetrating wings.

3 Down

1. Returning 3. Was expecting a lot more from the 3 returning players. Felix looked more confident and played with in himself as always. Did not see much of a jump from last year. Amar looked out of place. They didn't find him on the wings and he didn't impact the game down low on either end. Jones looked like the most improved. If he focuses on rebounding defending and draining open looks- can def have a positive impact off the bench

2. Paint play. Will def be one of our weaknesses moving forward. Love Sima and he did well. But I wonder if he can get buckets in half court sets with 5 sets of eyes watching /reacting to him. Yakwe looked a little tentative. Will need both to rebound and stay out of foul trouble in BE play. One positive is that the both have the right mentality in the paint. On offensive around the basket they look to score rather than kicking back out.

3. Guard Depth. If we play Lovett and Frederico together with Mvouika sometimes as well. I don't see anyone who can spell the gaurds off the bench. Especially with the pace and type of offense we are going to play. That is not even considering If God forbid one of our guys has to miss games for injury etc.

Ps: I know it was just a scrimmage so not reading into anything too much.

How fun was it watching this team shoot? Like Jack mentioned earlier, that will allow us to stay in games.

What about Ellison?

For sure a possibility with him, though im not sure of his ability to rebound.

We had six guys in double digits!

Looks like we'll be surprising some people this year!

Good news-Our guys won the scrimmage

Bad news-Our guys lost the scrimmage

Yea that was great. They were lights out!

Ellison I think will contribute early but won't hit stride till mid January. He can do a lot of things well. Think he just needs more reps at this level.

We had 2 teams of our guys and only 6 men per team so actually 6 in double figures is kind of low. Nice to see a 32 pt scorer.

I don't know if this was mentioned but Jones had 15 rebounds. We sure could use him if Williams is not recovered.Williams stats were un impressive. Sure keeping my fingers crossed re, Lovetts eligibility.
