Red White Game

I like what ive seen so far

Lovett looks like he's playing at a different speed than everyone else. Johnson draining shots and Ellison looks really skilled.

Yes those three stand out the most. Mussini and Williams as well. Fingers crossed on Lovett.

Few observations:

1) this team will be able to stay in games on paper they shouldn't if they hit the 3 like this all year

2) we will struggle rebounding. Owens has been the most impressive rebounder so far and he won't play this year due to transfer

3) Have I been pronouncing Lovetts name wrong all these months? These announcers are pronouncing it like its Love it. I have always said Love Et.

4) the offensive sets we have run have been simple plays but look so refreshing due to the lack of sets we had the last few years. I'm impressed.

5) Sima is raw but looks very promising. Hasn't even started his 1st season but he already has more post moves than obekpa ever did

We have some shooters with Johnson, Mussini, Ellison and Ron. Owens also displayed a nice mid range jumper. Looks like a nice prospect for us to develop for next season.

I would've loved to had Obekpa on this team (if he could've gotten himself together).

Garf!

@StJohnsBBall: Five Star Basketball alums with camp founder Mr. Garfinkel prior to today’s Red White Scrimmage #SJUBB

@StJohnsBBall: Team Red down 8 points with 3:39 left.

Marcus LoVett paces Team Red with 22 points.

Got it.
Another huge turnout by SJU fans.
Students are out trick or treating. PS We could be coming off consecutive final four teams and this scrimmage would still be empty.

3s?

We're hitting 3s?

Stop the madness!

This NYC, sorry, but a scrimmage here ain't a scrimmage in a state like Kentucky. Commuter school, halloween, Saturday in the city, Mets in the series...you act like a team predicted to be tenth in the league should have 20k out for a scrimmage? :) Let coach have some success and then worry about the wagon filling up...sheesh. :)

thanks for the updates on this though posters...nice to hear about Lovett (hope he is eligible--one, he worked his ass off to be so, and two, seems like a player with real promise) and Ellison. I have this hunch that St. John's will not be the last place team in the league, but who knows?

Durand Johnson is by far the best scorer out there. The three returning amigos are a non factor.

Didnt see anything today from Jones that you liked?

Johnson is clearly the most ready guy.

LoVett is like an angry hummingbird. As long as these guys are passing and not turning the ball over he's an unstoppable force for the offense.

Ellison has a huge upside. Really impressed with him as a freshman. Athletically, speed, confidence and versatility. Yakwe will end up being one of my favorite players but he is not as polished or confident right now.

Mussini looks a lot more mature than a freshman. He is a nice counter balance to Lovett as well. He's deceptively quick as well.

Williams has potential to be a lot of things for this team but needs some polish. Hopefully it is just some rust from his time off and injury rehab.

Sima is our rock in the front court. He is not a raw, project.

Owens is an interesting player. I don't love seeing him shooting threes but he's surprisingly athletic, aggressive and confident. Between him Yakwe and Ellson these guys will be something to look forward to in year 2.

Amar and Felix didn't see much notable.

Biggest surprise to me is Christian Jones. He looks authoritative and confident. Never seen him move so much and be so effective even attacking the rebounds. If that carries into the season it will be a difference maker for this team that needs muscle and rebounding.

Mvouika also surprising. He is going to give us solid minutes and I didn't know he had that range and stroke.

Turnovers & Free Throws. This team has very little margin of error. Lovett will make this offense really fast but if they are turning the ball over or missing free throws they will just be wasted trips. Flash with no substance. If they want to win games they have to hit free throws. I suspect Lovett and Ellison will spend a lot of time at the line. These guys in particular better perfect their FT.

Great post

LoVett better be eligible.
We are going to get beaten up inside.
Ellison showed promise but has to turn down the reckless drives and finish stronger when he gets to the rim.
Johnson is the man.
Moose has good instincts but needs to get stronger.
Williams showed some flashes.
Sima has potential but needs to work on his positioning, he's CO2 at the foul line.
Mvouika has a decent shot but could be a liability at the defensive end.
Ali looked lost and Felis was Felix
CJ had a brief stretch but really didn't see much floor time.
Owens had a couple of nice baskets, he'll be stronger next year.
Yakwe has the most raw potential of anybody. Not sure if he needs a year off but he's going to be a killer up front.

Agree with Paul's excellent assessment.

Personally, I thought Amar looked totally lost out there, and unless he turns things around quickly, I don't think he'll be seeing much PT.

Biggest concerns are a huge hole offensively on the inside and LoVett's eligibility.

My thoughts

LoVett is so much fun to watch. Please lord grant us this one wish. Can Shoot, pass, drive, and draws plenty of contact. Think hed play close to 35 minutes a game.

Ellsion is such a good athlete, probably most complete on the team. Cant believe how fast he is in a straight line. Missed some easy ones today but thought he did a great job all around. Looks ready to go.

Johnson- You can see what he is capable of, will need him to not only score but rebound and defend at a high level to compete.

Mussini- Quickest release we've had since I can remember. Thin as a twig but seems to play stronger and quicker than he looks. Changes speeds well, couple very nice passes. Excited to see him play along side LoVett.

Sima- Tough to tell, I like his form on his jumper, really attacked the offensive glass. Obviously needs to get stronger but it seems like he has a pretty good feel for the game.

Mvouika- Hit 3-4 threes but didnt do much else. Not the quickest player so I wonder how his defense will be, got blown by a few times. If he can hit shots and be a leader than that is a great addition.

Williams- Cant get over how much he looks like Obekpa on the court. Anyone else? He hit some threes but he looks rusty out there, almost hesitant to make any moves. That one drive where he attempted the poster dunk on Sima was impressive. We will need him to commit to rebounding if we are going to be competitive.

Yakwe- Nose for the ball which is great to see. Physically strong and uses body well. His shot within 10-12 feet looks pretty good. Year off should help him develop skills.

Owens- Surprised with form on his jumper. Long and active. Great piece to have for the next 4 years.

Jones- Jones impressed me like he has in the past. Had to have close to 12 boards which was nice to see. Quick first step and has interior skills that this team lacks. His hands are very poor however. Hope he gets a shot at a consistent role this year.

Amar- struggled in the game but physically looked much better.

Felix- In the beginning I saw some nice things but as the game went on he kind of disappeared. Hope his arm is ok.

I think Owens surprised us all with his outside shooting. Could be a very important piece of the puzzle next year.
