Ray Salnave List of Three

With Greg Williams, McGriff, Posh, Cole, and Wusu, I would pass on Salnave. In my opinion, he would probably be better off attending LMU.
I dont think he is a pg so he is not competing with posh or mcgriff. I dont see Wusu getting big time minutes as a freshamn. So I think he would be battling with willimas and cole for minutes.

And coach mike isnt playing favorites. If Salnave thinks hes better then cole and williams, then I hope he comes on board and battles it out with those guys for playing time.

The competition for minutes is going to be tremendous this year. i cant wait to see what kids step up and earn time. These practices are going to be highly competitive. Its a great thing for this program.
Salnave's stats are solid, almost 15 PPG, shot 36% from 3, and 85% from free throw line, while also leading his team in steals at 1.5 a game.

I like the fact staff is recruiting and trying to upgrade the roster, the numbers will always work themselves out, and the best players will always emerge. You see big time programs all the time constantly recruiting even when they are full on scholarships and trying to upgrade even if their roster is already stacked. I like the mindset of never stop trying to improve your roster.

At least his 3 point shooting % is headed in the right direction over his career. Can never have enough decent shooters.

I'm not sure who he'd be replacing, but I'd have no issues adding him for 1 season. He's going to have to earn his minutes if he's here. So if he was a last minute replacement for LG, or for a late transfer like Caraher or Mcgriff then so be it.

Not sure it matters any way.

Unlike our previous regimes who were constantly leaking information, I love how tight lipped our staff is and have us all guessing. If CMA has now spoken with Ray this is a very serious recruitment. And my guess is that this isn’t a contingency plan for LJ. I honesty think this staff is looking to have the deepest most skilled bench and will do what they need to do to assure they put the best team in the court.

No brainer he wants SJU. Very good pickup if we lose LJ. Agree with those that said the PT will work itself out because as a SJU fan I want to see as much talent as possible. Time is coming we are going to have to make a choice, as there is no reason to enter season with a wasted scholarship, especially if we can have a grad transfer that wants to be here. I’ll take the kid that wants to be here.

Exactly & suspect the mystery of how or if roster space opens will be known within a week.

No inside info, but I’m getting the feeling that LJ is gone.

Myles Powell, Heron & Figgy all shot just under 40% last year. Kid shot well from 3 and 85% from the line while taking by far most foul shots on his team. Also led his team in steals. Wouldn't be a bad pickup at all imho if someone is leaving.

That's what it feels like, with the flurry.

Zagoria:

Could Ray Salnave be coming home for his final year of college basketball?
St. John’s hopes so.

Red Storm head coach Mike Anderson spoke Thursday night with Salnave, the 6-foot-3 former Cardozo High School star who is a grad transfer from Monmouth and is also considering DePaul and Loyola Marymount. Salnave had previously spoken with St. John’s assistants Steve DeMeo and Van Macon, but not directly with Anderson.

“Mike A. and I were talking and to his shock, he loved my confidence and how I get down,” Salnave said. “He thinks I could do a lot and help with a lot. He told me that he’s looking for an experienced guy that’s not afraid of the moment that could provide big impact. He liked how I could play/defend multiple positions and thinks I would fit really well in their system.”

St. John’s guard Rasheem Dunn also called Salnave several times. In the 2014 PSAL AA championship game at Barclays Center, Salnave went for 16 points, including the game-winning free throws with 2.5 seconds left, to beat a Thomas Jefferson team that featured Dunn and former St. John’s star Shamorie Ponds. Ponds also had 16 points in the game.
“Rah and I were just chatting and he was saying to come home and how he knows I’ll do the right thing,” Salnvae said. “But he told me he spoke with the coaches about me so that showed me he wants me there.”

Cardozo coach Ron Naclerio, who coached his team to that 2014 championship, is a St. John’s alum.
“As an alumnus of St. John’s and former varsity baseball and JV basketball player there, it would be sweet to see Rashond show what he can do there,” Naclerio said. “He would be the third Cardozo player to play for St. John’s The other two were Darryl “Showtime “ Hill and Ryan Williams. But I really want Rashond to make the best choice for him and not the people around him. He was special to coach!”

Salnave averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists last season at Monmouth. He will be immediately eligible for the 2020-21 season.

Zags really making it seem like he’s a priority for us. Why would we go this far if we thought LJ was coming back? Does anyone know if LJ finished the school semester? Usually a telling sign a player is going pro
So are you expecting 45% from Dunn?
No. All the more reason to add a 2 guard who's percentage is better than 40.

Ray's stats were solid in some areas and not so solid in others. At this point we need any shooters even with a capacity to reach 35%+ from 3. We needed much more offensive firepower last year and I would welcome Ray with open arms. Seems like the type of kid like a Rutherford who may not be a star but will be rock solid with a better team around him than Monmouth. If it means McGriff is leaving it would make a lot of sense. If it's LJ leaving then I think our expectations just went down by 2-3 wins if not more.

Not necessarily. How do you know what the newcomers will bring to the table? Not to mention, a few of holdovers may very well continue their ascension.

I vividly recall having a debate with a friend after the Johnnies lost Lopez and Hamilton to graduation, and he felt St. John's would take a slight step back. I immediately told him we would be better the following season due to the remaining personnel stepping up (as they had shown down the stretch of Lopez's and Hamilton's senior season) and bringing in Barkley and Thornton. Well, we all know how that turned out.

No, we're not bringing in a player of Barkley's talent but Cole could be on par with Thornton. The team won't exactly be devoid of talent, and the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.

Yes, the odds say this would be a better team with Figueroa but I can't nor won't definitively say based on who's returning and what we're bringing in.
