Rasheem Dunn Waiver Denied (APPEAL WON)

I am not familiar with the rules regarding a transfer request.Saying that and I know it has been said here, why is the AD concerned with this request when other students have requested to transfer,he had no coach at the time or is it just screwing the kid and the BE.I wonder what the numbers say regarding the percentages are for transfers going to power schools or conferences. Are they judged as harshly as we seemed to be.Just wondering?/

Do we know who fired whom? Did the new President or the new AD fire the coach? Sometimes people go in to conflict mode and lose sight about right and wrong because they get caught up in "us vs. them." This one feels like both a fight like hell scenario but also involve the media about the abuse of the son of a NYPD officer.

I've read that AD Garrett fired Coach Felton following transfers of key players. An interesting fact is Rasheem did not enter the transfer portal until Felton was terminated.

Let’s see how determined the adm is .if they take this lying down we will know.if they put resources in to a high power atty and take this all they way than that will be telling if not we all know where we stand and will have to live with it.but Dunn situation seems to be a good place to strongly take the NCAA to task

Did the NCAA not get the memo that our AD is from their golden child program Duke? Hopefully the backlash will help them see their errors

We can't allow this nonsense to happen anymore. St. John's has a stronger online presence than the average Power school and we need to make sure that's known. "Online/Twitter outrage" is obnoxious in most instances, however it's effective.

I spread this to the Big East message board, and will do follow up posts tomorrow:http://holylandofhoops.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7036&sid=3816705e8c3dc9f781b23b9fad7f1dba

News articles/forum threads will soon pop up anytime people search for "Scott Garrett". He's blocking a bunch of people on Twitter, so need to make sure our voices are heard.

Will give Garrett a call tomorrow, and then afterward CSU's president/HC when Garrett doesn't pick up. Everyone needs to help in getting this story to go viral.
What conference is CSU in?
They must have a message board as well?
Let them feel some pain on their home turf, if possible.
Not a bad idea, though their crappy conference (Horizon League) doesn't have very active message boards. I might sign up anyways.

On Holy Land I've already gotten some responses to my thread and posters from other Big East fan bases are getting involved. Nice thing about the current Big East is other members actually care.
I registered on the HL's message board and sent a civil message citing the punitive decision and opining that I didn't believe allowing this to stand would be good for CSU's or the League's recruiting prospects.
I also sent another email to President Sands and cc'd AD Garrett and new Coach Dennis Gates calling the NCAA's decision a Hobson's choice for Rasheem.
Let's hope St. John's appeal has legs.

FWIW.....I just sent the following email to the school's president. I copied Garrett and the current coach.

President Sands,

I would like to confirm your knowledge of the NCAA’s decision to deny a waiver for Rasheem Dunn. It has been reported by local New York media outlets that Athletic Director Scott Garrett refused to support this student-athlete’s bid to gain immediate eligibility.

Rasheem transferred to Cleveland State to play for coach Felton, who was fired in July of this year. As you may know, this is an atypically late date to fire a basketball coach. Regardless of your thoughts on Coach Felton, Rasheem Dunn left New York for Cleveland and sat out a full year to play for him. When that opportunity was abruptly foiled, Dunn transferred back home to St. John’s University.

Today, due in large part to AD Garrett’s lack of support, we know Dunn will not be eligible to play this year AND will have to sit out ANOTHER YEAR. This is devastating to the young man who is now essentially collateral damage. In case you are unaware, in situations like this, an AD will almost always give their “blessing” to the transferring student. In addition to hurting the student-athlete, many folks are acknowledging that the selfish, vindicative stance taken by Garret is not a “good look” for Cleveland State. I would imagine student-athletes currently being recruited by your school should take note and proceed with caution.

Thank you for your time. I hope you consider the situation.
Great, JF. I emailed each separately Your approach may be better.
Whatever works!
Send it to the President,
AD and Head Coach.

Dunn’s waiver denial is yet another example of the NCAA’s callous disregard for the welfare of student athletes. This should not be a surprise to anyone as the NCAA’s primary purpose is to serve and protect member institutions. Other examples of the NCAA's disregard of the needs of student athletes include the NCAA’s failure to discipline North Carolina for offering the no-show classes, thereby robbing student athletes of the opportunity to be educated. (Yep. that still burns me to the core.)
Given, the student athlete’s essential involvement in college sports, the student athletes need to form a union or something similar so they are fairly represented in any and all pending discussions regarding payment to student athletes. I am quite confident that the NCAA has lawyered up and is preparing their legal challenges to recently passed laws in New York and California, allowing students to receive payments for use of their likeness.

The NCAA sucks and Feds should dissolve it immediately.

Time frame of appeal is big question. Orlando Sanchez waited a long time as I recall for his adjudication.

Trust me, I think that the denial of the waiver request is APPALLING. With that said, we may need some more info before laying the blame at the feet of the Cleveland State AD. It appears that the verbiage being reported (about that AD noting that Dunn had had the option of remaining/playing at the school) is the result of a recent modification of NCAA guidance concerning waivers for transfers:

“In cases where an athlete was run off by a coach or essentially had their scholarship pulled for non-disciplinary reasons, the NCAA will require a written statement from the athletics director at the previous school stating whether the athlete would not have had an opportunity to return to the team and why the athlete is transferring. The committee is being instructed to deny cases where the athlete can’t document that they’ve been run off. That marks a change from prior protocol, where a key determining factor in "run off" situations was whether the previous school objected to the waiver request.”

While I don’t have much confidence in the NCAA, I do have full confidence that AD Craig et al is taking strong/appropriate steps on behalf of Dunn. At least to me, this appears to be a problem with the NCAA not being sufficiently flexible on a unique set of circumstances, which is resulting in an extremely punitive result.

The more I think about it, the weirder it seems to be. I could be wrong, but the school first needed to allow Dunn to transfer, right? So if they didn't block the transfer, why block the waiver?

1,500+ signatures so far......

Like everyone else, I'm livid. But as some others on here have posted, something doesn't add up. By all accounts, this seemed as close to a no-brainer as there could be for a waiver. Which leads me to believe that we may not know the entire story. So, I'm going to wait and see what comes out before jumping to conclusions.

Anyone desiring to register their feelings with the decision makers at Cleveland State University may wish to contact members of the school’s Board of Trustees.

Remember: the President of Cleveland State reports to the Trustees. Note- I bet the Cleveland State Trustees do not get frequently contacted by the members of the public

If you do chose to contact the Chair of the Trustees or any trustee then PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL.

Below is a link that identifies the member of the CSU Board of Trustees.

How can any reasonable explanation be given for the following:
A top rated impact football recruit , Justin Fields, transfers from Georgia to Ohio State and does not have to sit out even two days because he overheard a racist remark in the dressing room.
Dunn is required to sit two years and lose a year of eligibility.
AD Cragg should contact Ohio St. and find out what or how much did they include in the transfer application.

Yikes. 'Committee speak' and doesn't seem like a 'speedy process'.
Let's hope.

I may be wrong but I thought the NCAA has recently condoned / permitted athletes to play immediately at their new school IF the coach left or was terminated before certain school session dates and prior to the season?
In this case, I'm guessing AD Scott Garrett (who was hired in March) fired Coach Felton in July in the midst of a series of CSU players entering the transfer portal since June, and attempted to lure some back. One key player, Jaalam Hill, returned to the team.
Maybe AD Garrett fumed when Rasheem entered the portal 1 day after Felton was terminated and with some vague guidance from the NCAA, exacted his revenge?
Whatever. This stinks.
Let's get this punitive decision reversed.
