Providence, Sat. Mar. 5, 12:30pm, FS1 & (Radio ?)

This was about as ho hum a loss as you could imagine - outcome never in doubt, unless you believe that crawling within 13 makes it a game.

I believe Mullin is a super competitive guy, and I also believe that when the outcome is already sealed, he gives up, and can't wait till the game is over. How else could you explain when all 5 of our guys decided not to chase a fast break when one of our guys launched an errant 3 very late, and not one of our guys made it to halfcourt? I would have put the last 5 guys on our bench in at point? Or the matador defense one of our guys with 4 fouls played when Providence took t to the hoop on him late, presumably to keep himself on the court to pad his stats.

You can look at the box score and try to pick out bright spots, but when your team gets tattooed 17 out of 18 Big East games, there usually isn't a warrior for us standing out as one of the best players on the floor. Some of those same guys with a decent box score had embarrassing turnovers trying to take the ball to the hoop, or launched long off the mark 3's with plenty of time on the clock when a basket could have brought us within 10 points.

There are a couple of guys to really like, and thankfully they will be back.

I just hope that going forward the staff coaches all 40 minutes hard, and takes our guys to task for not playing hard, smart, or unselfishly - no matter what the score.

Is Ben Bentil from Providence a future NBA player?
He's listed at 6'9, 235 lbs
He's only shooting 31% from 3, but he's taking 4 a game, so it seems he stretches the floor / and can keep on improving in that area.

What's his athleticism like? nba material?

Great title...Ma Newer...

WRT Jones, his mental lapses can be frustrating but I agree that he did improve this year and on a team with better starting talent could be valuable...certainly best back to basket player that we have...not saying much but if he is coached up may be able to finish a bit better

Steve Lavin said Jones was a special player and as good a post up player as he's ever coached. It's just a shame that he never demonstrated those skills while he was being coached by Steve Lavin.

Beast, I hate to say I agree with this pretty sad commentary. We have to see improvement from the coaches next season or there's going to be a lot of long nights. The other coaches in this league work every minute of every game. They know the college game. The college game is 30 precious games with every possession important. The game preparation and game coaching is a difference maker. More so than in the 82 game NBA season.

I know Mullin has great character and work ethic. He has to use these traits to learn how to win at this level next season and beyond

Anyone thinking that he just needs better players is sadly mistaken

Couldn't believe when I saw that...also don't like to see our guys walk back to the huddle during a timeout

Also noticed Balamou refused to be part of a foul line huddle during the first half. No repercussions. Guess the 5 man staff didn't notice it. Adjusting their seats on the bench maybe. :)

Beast...your last point is something I was thinking about today...I think this will be part of Mullin's personal evolution as a coach...he seems to be such a low key, "let is slide off your back" type of guy that he rarely if ever gets heated with the team (at least from what I have seen in games)...maybe it's just his style or maybe as you say a case of resignation that he cannot get much more out of these guys so "hakuna matata"...for me, no other explanation as I can't take seeing the lack of hustle, closeouts and bad shots...I am sure gets frustrated as evidenced by some of the mass changes...hopefully messages are being delivered in practice...

That said, he was the type of player that always figured things out...I am sure he will adapt especially when his own expectations ramp up

What do you suppose will be Mullin and staff's process for the staff's "self annual review" of sorts to see what changes they need to make within their staff unit operating - whether it be X's & O's, game day/sideline demeanor (perception), huddle style etc. Conferring with Mullin's contacts to get advise/consulting for ideas, outside input etc ?

My point being... let's take something like "scorer's table".... Clearly gets visible attention on fan board where guys like us scruntinize everything... but does this type of stuff ever get relayed up back to the staff ?

Scorers table most definitely was mentioned directly to Mullin casually by others. He hasn't done it in several games I think

Although the sitting leaning back with legs stretched out look for most of the game while getting blown out isn't a great look either but it's at least a step up from the scorers table so that's progress

excellent posts by you and beast

Many of the guys who played today are not Mullin's players and he had to do his best to manage them. Next year he will have coached all of the returning players at least one year and he will have his new recruits joining them. I can't believe the complaints about him. Next year will be when I start to evaluate him and his coaching staff. In addition I think many are underestimating the improvement a team can make. In 1988 Rutgers went 7-22 and in 1989 they made the NCAA tournament. Just one example but it can happen.

I don't think either Yakwe or Sima need to take "massive leaps in their games." They both had fine freshman seasons in my opinion--especially considering that Sima was injured and Yakwe had to sit out a bunch of games. They both have tremendous raw talent and have made huge strides.

Mussini, unfortunately is just not a Big East player IMO. I would also submit that Ellison is not either.

Agree about Mussini; not sure about Ellison, although from what we've seen to date, definitely not starter material. For the record, Mussini (who seems like a terrific kid who gives it his all) finished the regular season with a team-low .337 FG% and shot .309 from three-point range (only Amar and Felix shot worse). Not good stats for someone who came here with a reputation as great outside shooter. Streaky, yes; but great, absolutely not. (On the plus side, he did make .872% of his FTs.) Barring a huge turn-around, his PT will most likely take a big hit next season (especially if Alkins comes here), and I wouldn't be surprised to see him go back to Italy after next season.

Sorry for posting the pics twice, my computer froze during the 1st upload & I didn't realize that they went thru.

BTW i do think that this group of young men may have finally gotten frustrated and worn down but
They did not get tattooed 17 out of 18 games. if you even took the time to watch any of the big east games there were a few terrible loses but there we many hard fought games (2 nova games 2 xavier games, seton hall, the first PC game both marquette games and the first creighton game) that they we were in and had an excellent chance to win.
Half of which we may have won if we had a point guard .
So everyone just relax root for the redmen on wednesday and wait till next year. Word
