Providence, Sat. Mar. 5, 12:30pm, FS1 & (Radio ?)

Poor roster or not, defense obviously will be a major point of attention for team & staff next season. We will never have sufficient fire power to overcome opposition getting 80-90 points a game. I had hoped to see some improvement as season progressed, but it never happened in my opinion. Oh well, keep recruiting!
Amen! And while there are some very good posters here that are very optimistic about next season, all would be wise to remember that just having talent will not make your team into a contender overnight. Hard work, coaching, team construction and simple luck also play a role. Right now I'm watching an incredibly talented LSU team get smacked by Kentucky. With the probable #1 pick in the upcoming draft.
Will next year be better? It should be. However until the incoming class plays a few games, and the coaches show good in game decision making, and I see major improvement from those remaining, I'm not ready to hop on the bandwagon, just yet.

Oh come on now Porgyman, hop on the bandwagon - the one that reads in bold red and white letters "OPTIMISTIC AND REALISTIC " - the one Oldschool Redman posts about:
13-14/15 wins = doable.
Better roster = will exist
More enjoyable season = absolutely
Involved with top recruits = we already are.

all the best
:)

If it is not, we will suffer more embarrassments...this crew never attempted to change the game on the defensive end...in many, if not most, cases our ability to hang around was more a function of poor shooting by the opposing team (e.g. Nova and SH)...if not for Yakwe and Sima, we would have zero defense...

Mullin's sharp...I am sure he recognizes and will take the necessary steps
I'm just glad he got over the leg cramps that stopped him from standing the 1st 30 minutes of the game while we were getting blown out

Unimaginable how bad our defense and ft's are

I'll be there on wednesday but I'm happy the season is ending

Best of luck to the seniors in your future endeavors

Mike, did you meet our defensive consultant?
Non existent. Funny thing is and I swear I'm being serious Nathalie asked me why our coach is so young ( she doesn't know who Mullin is ) I asked her what is she talking about and she points to St Jean standing directing things

Then she asks why don't we play defense

New Avi in honor of Nat & our D!
+1

Mullin talks about the need to close out on 3s better...So he obviously recognizes it...I just wonder if he resigned himself to the fact that absolutely no one on the team can play defense...the turnovers, poor FT shooting is easier to accept...lack of defensive intensity is a tough swallow...
the lack of D drives me crazy with no closing out of shooters. I can live with the turnovers.

We were shooting 0% of ft's up until about 10 minutes into the 2nd half. I think we were like 0 for 8 or something like that.

Sorry, I'm just not there. IF every recruit plays to their ceiling. IF Yakwe, Sima, Mussini and AA all took massive leaps in their games, IF we started playing defense like a Division I team, IF the coaching staff gets this new talent to play cohesively in a team concept, IF the ball bounces our way in a couple of close games next year, IF our OOC schedule isn't brutal, 13-15 games is doable.
In my mind, that's asking quite a lot. I want it to happen, I really do. I want to experience that feeling that I had as a college senior in Lexington, KY the night before our Final 4 game.
One other thing, from a self reflection standpoint. 30 years of hearing relentless hype about recruits coming in here has somewhat jaded me. I need to see performance, on the court, at this level, before I anoint any new freshman as "the next coming". Feeling otherwise just leads to disappointment.

I don't think either Yakwe or Sima need to take "massive leaps in their games." They both had fine freshman seasons in my opinion--especially considering that Sima was injured and Yakwe had to sit out a bunch of games. They both have tremendous raw talent and have made huge strides.

Mussini, unfortunately is just not a Big East player IMO. I would also submit that Ellison is not either.

Great title...Ma Newer...

WRT Jones, his mental lapses can be frustrating but I agree that he did improve this year and on a team with better starting talent could be valuable...certainly best back to basket player that we have...not saying much but if he is coached up may be able to finish a bit better

His recent improved play has earned him more playing time next year. Good for him.

Many here are looking at these Team's performance as a precursor to next year's team performance. Nothing could be further than that assessment.

Likely, few of this year's group will be on the Roster, next Year. This team had a talent level of a low Maac or below level. No disrespect intended. None of these kids would be recruited by any BE team, yet we asked them to compete in one of the Nation's top 5 Conferences. And, only 3 of them, Jones, Amar, Felix had ever played together and, none of these got quality minutes under Lavinwood.

BC is likely to finish with No Wins in the ACC Basketball season. This to go with BC's FB team going 0 for the ACC football season. BC hasn't been good since Al Skinner was there.. Their current Coach, Jim Christian offered this as a comment.. " We don't have any 4 or 5 star Recruits with our Program. We have to develop Players who are rated below those levels and hope they improve and be able to compete."

You could say the same thing about this Year's St John's team. The talent is just not there and complaining about Defense or Ft shooting with such a depleted Roster of young or 5th Year players isn't realistic. The team on the Court this Year is really a function of Lavin's horrible 2 seasons of Recruiting. Or, Recruiting players with issues like Jordan or Obepka. Both, of whom showed so little loyalty to the school, for whatever their personal reasons.
Without a doubt, Mullin didn't need to inherit Lavin's petulant and troublesome duo!

I am amazed that such knowledgeable fans are pot shoting Mullin for what THEY believe are his Coaching traits or mannerisms.. Come on! Don Nelson, one of the Winningest Coaches in NBA history , sat on the Scorer's table and wore Sneakers with a Suit and no tie, before it became common.

i am surprised too, with some exceptions that , such Unrealistic levels of Play were actually expected by fans? How could that be? But, you have to give the Coaches and Players credit for completing the Season, without all the perpetual Lavin Drama. No kids were caught smoking Pot, no one was arrested, nobody was in dire Academic Straits, no one was suspended. And, Lovett's limited qualification, is on the NCAA for whatever reasons they ruled upon.. Fair or Unfair, we don't know. Let's hope he has a breakout Year next Season, like the Kid, Brogdon on Virginia .

Like Louie once said, " Time to put the Balls Away." But, like a familiar candidate has proclaimed, We can hope, Chris Mullin WILL, " Make St John's Great Again." I have confidence it will happen.

Besides our horrible defense we have to be the worst passing team. I could mention some consistent offenders but they are all guilty. I expect improvement with their fundamentals next year.

Season constants-
Can't shoot FTs and can't defend the 3.

Add to that list the penchant for trying to make ill advised interior passes in traffic and long, out of control cross court passes..

WRT defending the 3, we don't even attempt to defend the 3...our guys (Mvouika and Mussiini are the big culprits) routinely lose their man...the team should be told to do their own job and not worry about whether the rest of crew is doing their part...

Anyway, we will be put out of our misery soon - thankfully...Loved going to the games and always will irrespective of results..but this was just too tough to watch...

Perhaps we should decline the Big East tournament :)

No. We will be in the game against Marquette. As far as defending against the three we have to stop clogging the middle, allowing the open shots from the corner. Heck, let Sima and Yakwe worry about the guy driving through the middle.

That's my point...guys like Mvouika drop off their man to help out which he is incapable of doing (too slow, can't jump and just reaches in)...he should be told to just stay on his man and not worry about what everyone else is doing...same for Balamou

Jack, I believe the Player's coming in , will have much higher levels of fundamental skills than this Year's group. Hence, they wont have to be improved.. Many of the Players on this Year's team won't be on the Roster. And, the ones that return might be Bench or Role Players. Have Faith in Mullin. He knows what it takes.

Who is this Lindsey guy? And will someone please introduce our defense to him?

He averages 6.5 points per game and I believe he shoots the three at a 35 % clip. Defense? Wide open shots for Bentil and him.

Speaking of Sima and Yawke...I don't know why they weren't on the floor together more today. They were both in the starting lineup, but it didn't last long. I don't recall another time when they were in together and given the state of our defense, I don't know why.

One more & put the balls away. Looking forward, but realistic re next season. Sure staff needs a break to recharge as well. Recruit !!!

Recruit !!!

You've written that all day. Yet, the one thing we all agree on, is that this staff has hit the recruiting trail hard. Every night that we don't play, someone on this staff is at some high school game.

Maybe "seal the deal" would be a better mantra.
