To me Clark Jr. is the potential answer for Yakwe that you noted Simon being for Mussini/Ellison minutes.

Still doesn't solve our huge gap for an under the basket presence

I think of Fun when I read the criticism of Bash. IMO he was our 2nd best player today. He was a little wild. But drew fouls and made the FTs. He also had 7 rebounds. If Ponds doesn't get ROY there is something wrong. Lovett looked a little off. Owens fouls too much and other than Bash our bigs didn't produce. Mullin must really be down on Yakwe, because he only had 2 fouls and Amar played , while he was benched. We even saw my favorite duo Amar and Freud at the same time.Dissapointing game.

I hear what you're saying about Bashir. He does play hard. But it seems like every one of his shots is forced and not a good one. Whenever he gets the ball, he gives me agita. But he does end up with good stats, which always surprises me.

After seeing how Yakwe played against Delgado, I hope he sticks around. He definitely took a step back this year, but I still think there's potential there. As for Clark Jr., at the end of the day he is 6'7. He will definitely help, but St. John's needs to add another big man to the mix.

Hoping a PF/C frees up after a coach gets fired or Matt A is able to convince a grad transfer to come here. Because I am really tired of seeing this team get beat up in the paint. You'd figure between Owens, Ahmed, Yakwe, Clark Jr., and another big man, they'd be okay up front next year.

And as for Ellison, he's unwatchable. Might be a great kid, but literally provides nothing on the court. Not a good shooter, bad court vision, turnover machine. I thought maybe he would take a big step forward, but this year has proven he is just not meant to play at this level. I'm not a fan of encouraging kids to transfer, but I hope Mullin makes it clear Simon will be taking his minutes next season.

I think a lot of shots were bad today. Because we really have no inside game Providence was really able to guard the perimeter. W Simon and Clark coming I'm not too worried about Ellisin. Unless he steps up his minutes will dwindle. We really need another Center. Hopefully Matt will be able to grab a grad transfer to fill that role.

I'm as frustrated as anyone with Malik's play, Mostly with his playing like he thinks he's "the man", and his decisions with the ball in his hands. I'd also like to see him go hard after a loose ball every now and then. However statistically his stats are very close to Sir Dom's stats at the end of his soph year. And there were many on this board who were calling for Sir Dom to transfer right up until his senior year. Some kids take longer than others to develop. Maybe Malik transfers out after this year, but if he returns I am not about to write him off . Hopefully he comes back a much improved ballplayer with a better understanding of his strengths and weaknesses. And hopefully CM will find a roll best suited for his skill sets and size, with him swinging between the 2 and 3. The one postition I hope to never see him play again is PG. Again, not giving up on the kid just yet.

That is Matt's intention for sure.

Pointer had far more raw talent than Ellison and that is what finally kicked in for him. Pointer was ranked the #25th recruit in his class coming out of high school, Ellison was a 3 star prospect. I just don't see it happening for him, given the IQ level demonstrated.

I've been writing on and off with a season retrospective, which includes this paragraph re Ellison:

"I was thinking about other dumb St John’s players the other day (no I don’t think I’m wasting my life thanks for asking) and one of them sort of reminded me of Ellison: he was athletic and had good size and looked like he should have been better than he was and was clueless for three years: Dom Pointer. Yes, Pointer was more gifted physically that Ellison and was more highly regarded coming out of high school but the point is that they were both dumb as rocks and sometimes the light just goes on, no matter how dim the bulb."

Don Emmanuel was the other one I thought of where it just all of a sudden clicked. (David Cain was a different animal because Cain never really played until he was a senior.) Having sat through two years of Ellison's ineptitude I don't see where the percentage is in having him transfer now, when he's on the verge of possibly not stinking. If he's atrocious there'll be enough depth next year where it won't matter and and if the light bulb happens to go on we are here to bask in its glow.

to even compare them two is crazy. Ill take Dom's offensive shortcomings for his stellar defense. He became a solid contributor and an amazing dunker/finisher his last couple of years. Ellison possesses none of what Dom had. I think Ellison is a decent bench player who needs to have a role, a role that does not rely on him scoring or distributing the ball. Ahmed has solid offensive skills, just need to make smarter decisions.

I too would like to see Ellison swing between the 2 and the 3, during practice that is. During games would like to see him take a comfy seat on the bench until gar-barge time. Wish I was as confident as some of you that Simon and Clarke will eat into Ellison's minutes but I have a feeling even if they are both vying for the Wooden Award, Malik will still get extended playing time.

This game was really frustrating too watch. Team came out total flat and looked unprepared. No ball movement no cutting a lot of playground 1 on 1 basketball. My brother a "casual" fan said they look like a middle school team. Dribbling off there leg,no hustling for 50/50 balls, committing awful fouls. Lovett looked totall disinterested (he did play 33 min) he had 1 assist/ Fruedenberg had 2 in 6 minutes.
We had 3-4 fast breaks early where we dribbled down court and turned it right over.
We got hammered in the paint, and I know we lack size, but box out.
I give Cooley/providence credit. But Mullin was right when he called the performance "brutal". After 30 games we should expect better. When we lose it not even competitive. I can't put it on one player. Staff needs to take some of the accountability. Team desperately needs real leader on the floor all great teams have one. And congrats to Ponds. Hopefully he takes a leadership role next year.

Monte, most on this board called for Sir Dom to transfer? How about everyone on the board wanted him to transfer.

And this is a guy who ended up our top ten all time lists in at least two categories while carrying his team to a NCAA bid his senior season.

Ellison will make his decision and do what is right for himself. He knows what is ahead for him more than any of us. Our coaches seem to look out for the players more than most do.

As a fan with high expectations for Simon I think there's a good chance that Ellison sees a future with more playing time elsewhere

If he leaves or stays I'm grateful he came here. We needed him these past two seasons

We'll know in a month or so.

I don't recall Donald Emanuel ever having much potential or anything clicking with him. He couldn't have averaged more than five or six points a game as a senior. I recall he devolved a mediocre outside shot his last couple of years, which he had no business taking as a big.

I for one didn't want Dom to transfer and I'm sure many others didn't either. Besides we were down to what 6 players. Sir Dom and ME are not on the same level as players.

For next year......

Guys I most want back:
Ponds
Lovett
Owens
Yakwe
Ahmed

Guys we pretty much know will be here:
Simon
Clark Jr.

Guys I wouldn't mind having a small role:
Mussini
Williams

Guys that could transfer and I wouldn't shed a tear:
Ellison
Amar
Fruedenberg

If I was gonna compare Ellison to exRedmen who sucked and then had the lightbulb go on their senior season I'd go with Chudney Gray. Pointer had abilities Ellison could only dream of. Ellison has the sucking part down pat, let's see if the lightbulb goes on. Lovett and Ahmed are 2 guys with better talent IMO that need to get under control. Ponds is light years above everyone on this team.

In complete agreement except would place one of your wouldn't shed a tear category into it's own would throw a party for category.
