Providence (MSG), Wed., Jan. 10, 6:30p, FS-1

I bet your Son is dazzling them at Cooper Union with his perfect use of Paragraphs .

CU is a great , great school that most People don’t know about . Son must be a Brain .

Do they play BB ? I hear the Pace Setters want to scrimmage them next year .
Thanks. Even though he is an engineering major, I have always stressed paragraphs with both my kids.

He never like playing team sports. His sports through HS were MMA, wrestling, and track.

Really? Did Chris hit more clutch free throws than he missed. You remember misses from one or two games but not the ones he made? Incredible.
Is it true that Mullin misses free throws in the tournament that led to them losing at the buzzer to Temple?

Cause if that happened I wouldn’t be able to forget it either

Temple yes his Junior year, Terrence Stansbury then I think hit game winner.
And I believe against Georgia his Frosh or Soph year? Was real young so not 100% sure on that

Mullin missed the front end of 1 and 1 in a tie game. Terrance Stansbury then hit a 25ft buzzer beater. Stuff happens.
Mullin was distraught, but he said he was coming back for his senior season right after the game.

I look at it differently. I love that he got those out of the way the last few games. The kid can clearly shoot.

Luis was so nervous his first two FTs that he shot line drives and now his shots almost touch the ceiling.
I was thinking if Brady hit those two, his legend would cray grow. But alas hes not ready for the pressure. But i think its a good learning moment. Glad we hung on so it didnt turn into a bigger deal.

You got the Temple game right. No costly misses against Georgia or any other NCAA game. Did miss a key FT at Nova his sophomore year.
However still shot 85% for his career at SJU which contributed to many many wins.

Thought against Georgia or Alabama on Russell/ Goodwin team?
Maybe didn’t directly hurt us but thought he had a pretty big miss
Could be wrong

I think CRP had Brady in the game because he’s shown in practice that he is a great FT shooter. Kid is a freshman, with freshman nerves at times. Brady will win us some games at the FT line in the future.
The kid “under pressure” has nailed big jumpers at key times in three BE wins. Yeah he missed some FTs but taking & hitting those big perimeter shots trumps any BS theories about him “wilting under pressure” last night.

That’s why I said “at times.”

Interesting that you mention Vegas since that's what the Big East is to me. One minute you are doing great, and the next you wonder where your stack of chips went. It's not minute to minute or hour to hour like Vegas, but these conference games come fast and furious, and every one is a war.

It's like that old game Battleship, where you have to avoid land mines. I'm sure there have been a thousand video games with the same theme, but I'm old school. which is just another way of saying old. Like Panther2 wrote, unless you have a NCAA invite sewn up, every game has implications. The guys are playing well, but we have to go through Donaga next. One of our guys has to step up like Superman to help s survive The Test of a Warrior.
Bill Parcells always used to say that every win just raised the stakes even more...not lowering it.

I'll be rooting for Providence whenever they are not playing us. Tough team with a great young coach and a real star in Carter.
Providence under Cooley, like UConn, is another disillusioned group who fantasize that the Garden is a second home court. We must use the rest of our home Big East schedule to disabuse them of this fantasy. Very important to turn out Feb 3, especially with Pitino’s let’s play in Carnesecca mind games.

Latest comments from Zach:

Well, St. John's is off to its best start in league play since 2000-01. Some thoughts to follow on the narrow win over Providence.

- The second half wasn't good. Poor shot selection, shaky rebounding and just not crisp basketball. Guess what? They still won. For a program that has often found new and inventive ways to lose over the years, finding ways to win is important. St. John's wasn't good in transition, shaky inside and committed 13 turnovers, but still prevailed. Handling adversity well is an important trait.

- RJ Luis made the game's biggest plays. The jumper when Providence cut the lead to four late and the offensive rebound with 6.7 seconds to go. He has so much raw talent. Going to be fun to watch him develop. Rick Pitino said again that Luis can be a first-round pick after next season if all goes right.

- Thought the crowd was OK. Too many Providence fans for my liking. Official number was 11,832. Would expect better numbers for Marquette a week from Saturday.

- Some negativity: I hated how St. John's handled the fast start. Up 20-5, they acted like the game was over. Settled for jumpers. Didn't defend with enough focus. Got sloppy. Pitino went to some very odd lineups. It's a good lesson. A game is never over until the final buzzer. Could've easily come back to bite them.

- Big boy schedule coming up. Seven of the next nine games are Quad 1. Back-to-back road games on tap at Creighton and Seton Hall, followed by Marquette and Villanova at home, at Xavier, home for UConn, home for DePaul, then at Marquette and Providence. 5-4 during this stretch would be huge.

- I'll admit it. I wasn't sure Daniss Jenkins was good enough the first month of the season. He's proven to be better than advertised. Over the last 12 games, 10 of which are wins, he's 12.6 points, 6.3 assists, 4.8 and only 1.6 turnovers. Awesome numbers. Best of all: He's often at his best in difficult times. He keyed that 17-5 run after Providence had gone ahead in the second half.

- There wasn't an immediate update on Brady Dunlap, who looked like he turned an ankle. Chris Ledlum wasn't 100 percent, but gutted it out for 15 minutes.

- Lastly: St. John's is 37th in KenPom, 34 in the NET and is 6-3 in Quad 1/2 games. Around a 7-9 NCAA Tournament seed on most Bracketology sites. In great position.
