Well, St. John's is off to its best start in league play since 2000-01. Some thoughts to follow on the narrow win over Providence.
- The second half wasn't good. Poor shot selection, shaky rebounding and just not crisp basketball. Guess what? They still won. For a program that has often found new and inventive ways to lose over the years, finding ways to win is important. St. John's wasn't good in transition, shaky inside and committed 13 turnovers, but still prevailed. Handling adversity well is an important trait.
- RJ Luis made the game's biggest plays. The jumper when Providence cut the lead to four late and the offensive rebound with 6.7 seconds to go. He has so much raw talent. Going to be fun to watch him develop. Rick Pitino said again that Luis can be a first-round pick after next season if all goes right.
- Thought the crowd was OK. Too many Providence fans for my liking. Official number was 11,832. Would expect better numbers for Marquette a week from Saturday.
- Some negativity: I hated how St. John's handled the fast start. Up 20-5, they acted like the game was over. Settled for jumpers. Didn't defend with enough focus. Got sloppy. Pitino went to some very odd lineups. It's a good lesson. A game is never over until the final buzzer. Could've easily come back to bite them.
- Big boy schedule coming up. Seven of the next nine games are Quad 1. Back-to-back road games on tap at Creighton and Seton Hall, followed by Marquette and Villanova at home, at Xavier, home for UConn, home for DePaul, then at Marquette and Providence. 5-4 during this stretch would be huge.
- I'll admit it. I wasn't sure Daniss Jenkins was good enough the first month of the season. He's proven to be better than advertised. Over the last 12 games, 10 of which are wins, he's 12.6 points, 6.3 assists, 4.8 and only 1.6 turnovers. Awesome numbers. Best of all: He's often at his best in difficult times. He keyed that 17-5 run after Providence had gone ahead in the second half.
- There wasn't an immediate update on Brady Dunlap, who looked like he turned an ankle. Chris Ledlum wasn't 100 percent, but gutted it out for 15 minutes.
- Lastly: St. John's is 37th in KenPom, 34 in the NET and is 6-3 in Quad 1/2 games. Around a 7-9 NCAA Tournament seed on most Bracketology sites. In great position.
