Providence (MSG), Wed., Jan. 10, 6:30p, FS-1

IMHO after 30+ years of attending the Big East Tournament (not to mention the regular season games) it has become apparent that every fan base has a distinct personality. It is like the different clans of hobbits, you can always tell a Took from a Brandybuck or a Bracegirdle.

Villlanova: squeaky clean preppy kids who are either majoring in finance, are in finance, or have a family member in finance.

Georgetown: Also preppy kids, but smarter and more diverse than the Nova crowd. Remember Ewing as a player even if born after 2000

Providence: Angry Southies who weren't smart enough to get into Nova or Georgetown and have a UConn inferiority complex. Routinely drunk and obnoxious. Worst fans in the league ... except for UConn, of course.

SJU: Geriatric Italian-Americans from Queens, their offspring, and kids who go to school with their offspring. Still think SJU is a national powerhouse. Delusional, basically.

Seton Hall: The New Jersey version of Providence.

Creighton: Mormons, basically. Honestly my favorite fans in the league, they're impossible to hate.

Marquette: Midwest Nice versions of Nova kids

Xavier: Older Midwest folks who love their team, hate Cincinnati, and know absolutely nothing about basketball.

UConn: No description needed, but "drunk hicks from the sticks who are hoops nouveau riche" works

DePaul: A mythical beast, I've never met a DePaul fan. At least not that I know of.

Butler: White (all of them, and VERY white), polite, preppy Midwest basketball lifers.
That’s a good comp.

I have had the Italian-American from Queens part locked in since birth, and am closing in on the geriatric part.

My son however just roots for SJU since he goes to Cooper Union. There is symmetry because Cooper Union is a neighbor of SJU’s Manhattan building, which is also used for its students (and was bought by SJU bought from Cooper Union).

Yeah, yeah. I know. Way too long winded a response. But I am responding to one of your posts, so…😉😀

A final thought on last night: The Providence fanbase has consistently and impressively churned out black belts in the art of obnoxious a**holes. The Big East’s Cobra Kai, if you will. Even my college age son noticed it.

While UConn fans have since become sensei masters, Providence has had a longer history and is deeply rooted in the culture of this art form, dating back to the conference’s inception.

They continuously never fail to disappoint. Must be something in the New England water.
The Nassau County Catholic high schools pushed a lot of my children’s friends and classmates to Providence. Now they are back. The amount of Providence Alumni in the Metro area, most younger, has grown a lot in the last twenty years. There were very few of them in 108 so I can’t personally comment on behavior but respect the opinions here.

Me too but not just cause of his injury. Missing foul shots (which almost cost us the game) at the end of a game, once again, is indicative of a player who’s not ready for that sort of pressure. And those two missed foul shots were not even close.
I look at it differently. I love that he got those out of the way the last few games. The kid can clearly shoot.

Luis was so nervous his first two FTs that he shot line drives and now his shots almost touch the ceiling.

Having gone to HS in Fairfield County the preppy like kids went to either Nova or Providence. Big fan of Thayer St. If you were a little better academically it’s GTown. Not a lot my class went to Uconn, Storrs is the shits that’s why they’re student pop gets picked off and run over during spring weekends and they raised in state app/tuition.

Ha ha ha. Like Larry Wright has the balls to question a Pitino move playing Conway for a few minutes. This guy is hilarious.
See reading comprehension is important.
Someone had asked a very valid question about why Conway appears in games sort of like our version of where is Waldo?

My post was simply a response to the OP.
And actually my post was a quasi defense of Pitino, though he doesn’t need it.

Since at my age, I am unable to multitask, I just root for the team and am not on redfans. Now when I wake up at 4:30 am, I read the game thread. A lot of insightful posts. Have to tip my hat to Marillac, as hard as he has been on Jenkins since the beginning of the season, he recognized his importance to the team yesterday and acknowledged the good things he was doing.

One thing I don't agree with is the posters who said we are going to Creighton playing with house money. Total Fallacy. The only way we can play with house money in the Big East is if we get to the last two games of the season with a 14-4 record so no matter what happens in those games, our spot in the tournament is guaranteed. At present, we are 4-1 with games against Creighton, Seton Hall, and Marquette coming up. Ain't no house money on the table, we need wins. We can come out of this stretch 7-1 or 4-4, as we have seen there are very few easy wins in the Big East. We need every win we can get beginning Saturday.

Let me give you an example. When I was involved in AAU, we would go to the Big Time tournament in Vegas every summer and sometimes I would take my wife. Now if I go downstairs and with $500.00 and win $1,500.00, I would go upstairs and give my wife the $1,500.00, then go back down with my original $500.00 and continue gambling, that is playing with house money. No matter what happens on my second trip downstairs, I am a guaranteed winner cause Mrs Panther ain't giving shit back.

Happy to get that win last night, hope everyone is having a great day.

That’s all well and good Panther. But what I am really interested in is what did you do with the $1,500 you won, during the times your wife did not accompany you to Vegas. 😁😉

Great post panther but this line (Mrs Panther ain't giving shit back.) had me cracking up!!

happy news to wake up to. Teams must be quaking in their boots knowing that we aren’t a pushover any more with Pitino at the helm.
Hmmm, quaking in boots ? I doubt that McDermott , Hurley , Smart , Miller wear boots . But , might have seen the chinks in our armor last night .

Providence will be a tougher game at the Amica Mutual Arena next time . Count on it . Like Michigan , they exposed our lack of quickness on defense as they made their 2 nd half run .

Pitino going Zone slowed them for a while but , then they started burying the 3’s and out rebounding us .

Carter was from Mars last night . Terrific game for him . I think he was expecting a call on Luis for over the back on that great rebound . But , he did foul Luis when he grabbed the ball . 5 th foul .
I was surprised that Pitino didn’t have the ball in Jenkins , Dingle or Alleyne’s hands more down the stretch . Plus , they are better foul shooters than Dunlap , who is 60 percenter .

My wife and I just got out of a matinee of MJ the Musical. On the way there, received a couple of “Let’s Go Johnnie’s” chants walking to the theatre (I am wearing a Columbia Jacket with the STJ logo), chatted with a Nova fan while waiting to get in and then chatted with a fellow Johnny fan (I am wearing a long sleeve polo shirt with the STJ logo) during intermission. The buzz is there.
Funny, at the end of the game, I ran into the first guy that acknowledged my St. John’ gear on my way to the Broadway show. We had a quick chat and he is a recent St. John’s grad working in midtown. And boy was he stoked about the win and the team.

Interesting that you mention Vegas since that's what the Big East is to me. One minute you are doing great, and the next you wonder where your stack of chips went. It's not minute to minute or hour to hour like Vegas, but these conference games come fast and furious, and every one is a war.

It's like that old game Battleship, where you have to avoid land mines. I'm sure there have been a thousand video games with the same theme, but I'm old school. which is just another way of saying old. Like Panther2 wrote, unless you have a NCAA invite sewn up, every game has implications. The guys are playing well, but we have to go through Donaga next. One of our guys has to step up like Superman to help s survive The Test of a Warrior.
