Providence Game 2

You guys crack me up. What makes any of you think the school will get a coach in here who will do a much better job than Coach Lavin? I certainly don't have confidence in that...not one bit.

We could easily be longing for the Steve Lavin days several years from now.

Neither do I, but as I said before at some point you've to cut bait with someone who is not performing up to expectations and roll the dice that you can hire someone that can. And regardless of what happens down the road, I myself will never long to the "Steve Lavin days" just like I never longed for the "Brian Mahoney days" when Norm was the coach.

FYI Lavin has won one NIT game and one Big East Tournament game (which the refs literally handed to him) other than that he hasnt won a post season game at SJU.

If we are going by post season success then the Wizard has been abysmal.

We get so caught up in the recruiting rankings, well we have a top 3 class as seniors now witrh the # 25 player from two years ago and we still havent made an NCAA Tournament. So what good are the rankings if the coach cant coach the kids?

Well johnny fannies with the season on the brink of bustardoville and the providence friars coming to town to play in front of 3000 (quiet) fans at the Worlds most famous arena, we face a more talented and deeper team tomorrow that will be looking for revenge. With rasheed questionable and d angelo still not 100% the game outcome is predictable. For johnny fans looking for some hope and a tonic for depression the antidote doesn't come saturday against the friars of providence. Steve lavin who is quite the virtuous person has not been able to bring the program to the level hoped. Stay thirsty my friends stay thirsty.

So, in your opinion, within just 7 days, the 12,000 "loyal" johnny fans, including at least 2,000 students, who showed up to outscream a large Duke contingent, will now stay home - either disinterested or pouting. As far as I can tell, Lavin, whose coaching abilities I am ambivalent of, is a lot more loyal to his players and this program, than our win-starved fans. Give me Creighton fans any day, who filled an arena with positive energy despite a 9 (NINE) game losing streak and a season already in the dumper.

I'm not gonna give Lavin a pat on the back for being loyal. If we payed each fan millions of dollars they'd show up to every game. So it's not like Lavin deserves applause for sticking with the team he was hired to stick with.

Jack, everyone gives credit well deserved to Harrison for turning it around. Harrison gives Harrison the blame for being the jerk who deserved to get booted. Coach K likely would have booted him. You know, loyalty has little to do with how much you are earning, and once you have a career you will understand that the best managers are loyal to the people below him who earn far less. Our fans get so damned hung up on Lavin's salary. Look if we don't win, if he was making NR money, he gets fired. And if we win, his salary is irrelevant. I wish we'd just judge him on performance - the salary is none of our business because very few fans are kicking in big time to pay it.

I still don't understand why he deserves credit. He was paid to do a service for our basketball team and he's in the midst of attempting to do a good job. I don't need to have a job to understand that if your are getting payed a lot of money, and probably won't get hired elsewhere, then you probably won't leave your current job. Only other job he would get is his espn or fox job and believe me he doesn't wanna show his face around espn again without making a tournament with his own players. All his credibility will be gone.

Lavin is a lot of things and he could talk his way out of anything but he hasn't really done anything that gives me the impression he's a loyal person.

Why? Because coaching - HS, AAU, and yes, college has a ton of dirtbags who treat kids like meal tickets, flushing them as soon as they've lost value. No doubt that Lavin had a vested interest in Harrison turning himself around, in Jordan returning to the roster earlier this year, for Obekpa to reverse his decision to leave, and Greene also - BUT if you listen to the kids, no one at SJU who is gone from here has ever disparaged Lavin, and some, like Polee and Garrett have spoken highly of him. Our tendency as fans is to take losing and then not just focus on inability to win, but to disparage every aspect of the guy. None of us, EVEN THOSE WHO CLAIM TO HAVE A FRIEND OF A FRIEND OF A FRIEND who picks up towels in the AD, really know Lavin, his intentions or work ethic. Everyone interprets everything out of context. So if Lavin means that on an off day I have to get as far away as possible, yoga, meditation whatever - to keep sane because this stuff is killing me - then right now its perverted to mean he's lazy and doesn't care.

I'm all for him not being renewed if we don't turn this around, but the rest of this fan garbage is just that.
Gun to your head Beast, if SL lands a stellar class, but season ends badly, (no NCAA T) would you cut bait or stay the course with him?

Paultz, you know I respect you, so I don't think it's a loaded question.

If this season ends badly, it will be at least partially due to the Harrison injury and maybe Jordan. That's not an excuse because a deeper bench with very talented but not ready for prime time freshman could have shouldered that burden, but...

If he lands a stellar class he will be back, and I would stay the course for one more contracted season. Now, if his contract was running out at the end of this season that would be another story. I'm guessing he has reasonable assurances from AD that he will be here next season because he is recruiting hard, has one big recruit, and is a finalist with others.
Respect you as well Beast & frankly I go back & forth on this. The possibility of landing a stellar class frankly is hard for me to resist. I appreciate your response.

With you Paultz. Go back and forth as well. On the one hand, the prospect of foregoing a strong recruiting class and starting over (again) is frightening. On the other, difficult to imagine Lavin (very much to his credit) recruiting any better - this year or any other - than he did his first 3 here, and with those 3 classes now Sophs-Seniors we have a 6 man rotation and yet another season is hanging by a thread in January. Losing players to NBA is part of recruiting at that level so Harkless/Sampson no excuse, same will happen with a Diallo. So current approach, even with strong recruiting class secured, is similarly frightening and difficult to get excited about.
Excellent points re: one and done folks & constant need to scramble to replace them. My hope is SL sees that and complements the Diallos of the world with some 3 & 4 star kids capable of developing and spending four years here. I also hope we can get better at transfer game, occasionally bring in talented Juco kids & get in real early with recruits.(maintaining consistent contact). Reloading, not rebuilding is my desired outcome. Can SL do that? Not sure.

Instead of having a "team"with potential to dance, I prefer a "program" that will do so much more often than not. I just hope, if SL stays, we evolve into a stable program with far less turnover & drama. I know many programs suffer with the latter, but with the right mix of kids I think we can get on a more consistent, successful track.

Yeah his loyalty is off the charts, oh wait, except for the two years recruiting he took off so the team could suffer again with absolutely no depth. Loyalty.......yeah

We could easily be longing for the Steve Lavin days several years from now.

Frankly if we can't do better than Lavin then we should downgrade and get out of the BE.

I knew Lavin wasn't going to make much of our Program when he had no clue what to do against Gonzaga in the NCAA GAME 4 years ago, with Norm's players. Sure DJ was out but, we had played other BE teams tough that year to get the bid. Mark Few virtually undressed STEVE as a incompetent bench Coach then. It hasn't gotten better.

Great recruiter? Who says? 1 GOOD CLASS, despite half of then never playing here or only played a year or 2. Many minus points for not getting a balanced roster of Players who have BE Skills. He gets credit from many here because he got athletes with HS reps but, not necessarily fundamental BB skills. Pointer is a dervish but, can he hit the 12-15 jumper consistently? NO!

Harrison has heart but, so do kids playing for Providence or, Creighton or any of the BE schools. He's become our 3rd Leading Scorer , over 4 years because for most of the time, he's our only option. HE ALSO HAS TAKEN ALOT OF SHOTS to get those points and, not at a really good %.
Did Felipe or Malik shoot the ball that much?
i don't know and don't want to look it up. I've grown to like DLO but, we do overate him since we really have no one else that can score like him, on this team? Jordan? Shows flashes of a City kid game, goes inside but, misses a lot of bunnies and doesn't finish. His jumper is ok, not great and unreliable. His press clippings, which we embellished, were that he was going to be the 2nd coming. He isn't and he is too turbulent and off the grid too much. And, way too many turnovers.

Lavin would have been ok with sticking with this Group of Players if he had recruited some decent froncourt players with some skills at BB. They did not have to be 5 star quality either. 3-4 would be fine, if they were 6'8" and 235 lbs. Except Sanchez who, basically, wasn't very much in the BE FOR 1 YEAR. Orlando did not bang inside either.

PC last year exceeded all forecasts and won the Tourney with 6 players. Why? They had a TEAM WITH balance and BB skills Cotton, barley 6' tall was a gamer, BATTS banged and could score. Harris killed us. Fortune and Henton were well rounded players. Our team does not have those balanced skills and is why we don't win in the BE.

That is on Lavin! CO is a 1 trick player with no offensive skills and will never get them. He still can't shoot free throws. You can't win in the BE with a Center who isn't capable of some offensive contribution.

So, think before you jump on the Lavin bandwagon for him to continue . Many are saying, wait. why? Even, if he got all 5 MCD ALL AMERICANS, HE WOULD COACH THEM TO 4TH OR 5TH IN THE BE AND a at LARGE NCAA BID, AT BEST!

Face it.. Losing Lavin doesn't hurt that much. Certainly, for us fans, not as much as these terrible losses and inconsistent, amateurish play at times.

REMEMBER TOO, and you know who they are, many fans here were pleading for Norm to get that final year with his recruits.. It wasn't good strategy then and keeping Lavin now isn't either.

Those thinking we can win the BE tourney? are you kidding?

TREMENDOUS!

I would give him a two year extension so that means he has 3 years left. I would tell him he needs to demote Rico Hines, and a hire a young hungry assistant who wants to be out there and recruit. Pair him and Chiles together. Have two hardcore recruiters. . Whitesell is comparable to Dunlap so I want to keep him in place. I do have a problem that Whitesell appears to be overlooked by Lavin during games and he more relies on Rico for suggestions..

Trim the budget by not paying Keady and Darrick Martin to be high paid assistants? If he is not getting results take away a few of the perks he has maybe things will change.

Rasheen Davis of Manhattan would be a tremendous addition Imo. Has great recruiting contacts throughout the country. Well schooled from time at L'Ville & Xavier.

So let me get this straight Beast: you want to give Lavin credit for convincing Obekpa and Green to return to the team but absolve him of any blame for them being disgruntled and wanting to leave in the first place? Also when you talk about flushing a kid down the toilet are you talking about how Lavin Flushed Ron Roberts down the toilet after the kid committed to us, and just a few months before school was about to start? You think the guy's a stand up guy based on how you interpret things. Others on here think the guy's a snake oil salesman based on how they interpret things. Yet others fall someone where in the middle based on how they interpret things. Whether you want to see it or not, there's plenty of merit to each position. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and that doesn't make another person's opinion "garbage" any more than it makes your opinion "garbage"

Ron Roberts was released from his LOI because LAvin felt he was a grade B recruit and wouldn't see much time here. NR recruited at a lower tier than Lavin and after discussion with Roberts explained he'd be better of in a program where he would get more run.

No, Monte, I am not speaking about opinions. I am speaking about personal attacks on his character, intentions, and efforts based on us losing rather than objective discussions about factual information.

Keys to the game:
-We need to execute on offense.
-We need to limit turnovers.
-We need to close out on their shooters.
-And we need to win the rebounding battle.

Focus on Henton and Dunn and take our chances with the rest of 'em.

I thought you weren't responding to my posts. Your claim that he took two years off from recruiting must either be an exaggeration or commensurate with you being off your meds for that period. The worst recruiting year was for 14-15. 13 -14 he had one scholarship - jordan

Probably not.
But another assistant coach at another school can.

Isn't it pro forma to release a recruit if he asks when there's a change of coach? Do we know if Roberts asked for a release since he was recruited by the previous staff? Regardless, the same will happen with all the Lavin recruits if, and when he is fired.

@SportsInsights: #NCAAB #StJohns - Rysheed Jordan, Knee - is upgraded to probable Saturday (1/31) vs. Providence

Could we do any worse?
Lavin 0 ncaa appearance with his recruits.
1-2 in the NIT and that one win was on a last second shot.
What's so holy about Lavin? I just don't get it.

Never said he was holy. Just saying the next hire COULD be worse given our hiring track record. At least we are relevant again and we play in meaningful games. We are no longer a perennial 150+ RPI team like we were years ago. That's all I was saying...we can be in worse shape with our next hire.

This doesn't mean I'm satisfied with the results so far under Coach Lavin. But at least I enjoy watching the games again, unlike years ago.

The thing that I can't stand about Lavin is his quotes.
I think that he thinks us fans are stupid. Telling us oh we're headed in the right direction, and rebounding is overrated, or his dumb quotes like that one after the Creighton game. Then he says he's under no pressure to win, that tells me he doesn't care, or why even say that?
Then after every loss watching him shaking hands with the opposing coach, smiling, joking, laughing. I really hate happy losers
Say what you want about coach k, and boeheim, and cooley. They maybe sore losers but atleast you know they care and hate to lose.

To me it's not about losing. It's about his post game quotes and reaction with the opposing coach that piss me off.
