Question for someone that was there: How much of the FT woes should be attributed to a ridiculously tough behind the basket student backdrop? and flashing lights? And how much was just ineptitude?
I was there about 10 rows behind the SJU bench. I wouldn't attribute it to the backdrop, you have that in a lot of places. It's The Dunk (Amp) it's known to be rowdy, and this was nothing apparently because most of their students who are not seniors / uppderclassmen are home. It was clearly tension and nerves. First real road game, it was typical pressure. Hard to simulate that and practice it unless you live it but hard to imagine they shoot THAT bad from the line with that kind of volume again.

If Rick calls a timeout, PC gets to not only sub, but plan for multiple attacks. Instead, Pitino allows Smith to time it perfectly...make the shot or go to OT. Zuby sets the screen, forces the switch, that leads to a 6'2 188lbs guard in Bensley Joseph trying to box out at 6'9 240 Zuby Ejifor. Joseph is in such a bad spot, that he fights like hell to get position, and falls to the ground because Zuby is an ox in the paint. That leads to the offensive rebound and the rest is history.

It worked out, why try to play revisionist history. I get if they lost but like why this way?
Logic is a wonderful commodity. Thank you.

Thanks Dave. I enjoyed the Carl Banks.

Well if you look at the shot, it was a forced almost fade away. You are making up a scenario that was not planned at all to justify the result. As I said, I’m glad we won but if you watch the replay, Zuby got the rebound cause the player in front of him fell down but there were 5 PC players in position to get that rebound. I would rather have seen a solid play to get off a much better shot. This time the ball bounced our way, next time, maybe not.

rick did the right thing.

and if you notice, rick steps onto the court and yells the play to smith. rick also directs traffic while smith runs the play.

i think if there was less time, he probably calls TO. but with 17 secs left, he had enough time to give the direction.

But this was a solid play. It's why you have a senior point guard and you trust the ball in their hands.

What play do you want to draw up with 10 seconds left that isn't fundamentally different than that anyway? We don't really have great shooters to roll off screens or anything. And, like Dave said, English probably puts in better rebounders to prepare for grabbing a rebound. I don't like the idea of letting them get a quick breather, set up on defense, and get their head together. Embrace the chaos a little bit

with our personel... some times the best Offensive play, with Zuby/Luis/Scott... is the 2nd chance opportunity

What scenario am I making up exactly?

We come down in a tie game, run the clock down perfectly, get a decent look at the exact right time, so that when it missed we got a chance at a putback. Which we scored on at the buzzer.

I can’t think of anything better that could have been drawn up if a timeout had been called.

Seton Hall burned two timeouts in a similar situation last night and didn’t even get a shot off.

Not to mention the ball was in the hands of Smith, who on the previous possession hit a clutch pull-up that extended lead to 3. Absolutely the right decision by Pitino not to call a timeout.

You have the ball and a creative point guard on your side, in this situation with the game tied and you having the last shot, most good coaches do not call a timeout. The worst that happens, you miss but go to overtime just to make sure you don’t miss and leave enough time on the clock for them to get a rebound and go down court.

What you don’t do is call a timeout giving them a chance to set their defense and possibly match up better. If you’re behind, a different story but we weren’t.

Providence should have tried a "hack a Shaq" on Zuby if he touched the ball in last sequence the way he was shooting f/t's in the game

This actually could be a serious concern and not only Zuby if we cant knock down free throws especially in the one and one.

Zuby was also 12-13 against Georgia and 8-12 against Bryant. Definitely just something upstairs.

FT is something we really need to fix. I think it can definitely be fixed. Not sure our 3pt can get much better. If we're going to be a really physical team, we gotta knock them down.
