Providence, Fri., Dec. 20, 8p, FOX

You have the ball and a creative point guard on your side, in this situation with the game tied and you having the last shot, most good coaches do not call a timeout. The worst that happens, you miss but go to overtime just to make sure you don’t miss and leave enough time on the clock for them to get a rebound and go down court.

What you don’t do is call a timeout giving them a chance to set their defense and possibly match up better. If you’re behind, a different story but we weren’t.
I agree SJU85. Also , I trust Smith to do the right thing with the ball in that situation whether it be to shoot or distribute. I trust Smith in that situation more than any PG we’ve had here in a long time , especially when the opposing team has no time to set up their defense.

rick did the right thing.

and if you notice, rick steps onto the court and yells the play to smith. rick also directs traffic while smith runs the play.

i think if there was less time, he probably calls TO. but with 17 secs left, he had enough time to give the direction.
I don’t agree and I don’t think there is a right or wrong thing to do here. A few friends of mine, one of which was a former college coach would have called a time out, others wouldn’t have. Those who would have may have reminded the team of the time situation, when to go to the basket or who not to give the ball to, or who should be going to the offensive boards and at what point. If you notice from the replay, Zuby was the only one remotely close to the offensive boards.

This is a fan site, where we express different opinions. I never stated Pitino was wrong, I just said, I would have preferred a different approach. And while D Smith is a smart, experienced PG, he did end up taking a poor forced shot. Zuby was fortunate and skilled enough to have the ball careem right to him and have the presence of mind to put up a quick shot. Kudos to him.

He doesn’t think Zuby ending on a guard was skill or a designed plan. He thinks that was pure luck and a timeout would have somehow only allowed us to design a perfect play that Providence would have no time to also scheme against.
No, there is no such thing as a perfect play but I think we could have gotten off a better shot which the majority of the time will win or not win the game.

Having a tie game at the end was fortunate for the team. If the Johnnies were up one, that would have necessitated a deliberate foul from PC and with the way the team was missing fouls, I would have hated to let the game rest on a few foul shots.

Disagree, PC had plenty of time to set up as the Johnnies were not rushing the ball down the court. Second of all , Smith did not do the “right thing” he picked up his dribble, had no one to pass it to and forced up a bad shot.

I think it would be prudent if many of you looked at the last sequence and be objective. Watch the shot taken, where the rest of our players are after the shot, and how many were in position to get an offensive rebound. I realize that my point of view is unpopular as I just don’t agree with the final strategy which may deem blasphemous from those who hold Pitino on a special pedestal but again my thoughts are only an OPINION.

They were not in position to rebound because they were presenting themselves for a shot in case Smith passed it. Again if they don’t get the rebound it goes to overtime. That is the worst case scenario unless Providence wins on a full court heave.

I have seen many college games in this situation, and more times than not, I have seen most of the good coaches let them go.

Not to mention the ball was in the hands of Smith, who on the previous possession hit a clutch pull-up that extended lead to 3. Absolutely the right decision by Pitino not to call a timeout.
Agree. Big difference between having defenders in retreat mode than in deny mode after a TO.

We won......it got us back in the National Rankings in the coaches poll........one game at a time from here on out.
