Providence, Fri., Dec. 20, 8p, FOX

English led George Mason to nothing in the A10, and couldn’t sniff the NCAA tournament with Devin Carter. Including losing to a historically bad Georgetown team in the first round. Now he has a 7-6 team. This guy stepped into a program that was NCAA annually under Cooley and has it trending downward. If he was the SJU coach the “Is English the Guy” thread would be at 70 pages.

I know some here don’t like +- as much but I like it and I know our staff looks at it a lot and English mentioned it in his post game interview. It’s not the end all be all but I think it’s a good barometer
But you forgot to add that our staff are also hockey fans and PC has a very good hockey program (maybe even more popular than basketball) so English has more cause for reference.

I think it can be flukey for a game (if you happened to be on the floor for a run), but also believe that it absolutely is telling over the course of the season.

But dont forget, he’s got a cool motto.

Zuby's dunk from Sim made Sportscenter top 10. Earlier Daniss was on the list for an assist on a dunk. Double fun. I am not gonna read this thread but I bet it was crazy. Brutal wins beat brutal losses any day of the week.

And think of how providence fans feel. Their team couldn't put away a team that shot so poorly. It's all a matter of perspective. Our 2nd half rebounding and defense in the second half was enough for the difference.

Nothing to show statistically for Ayo in the boxscore but a plus 7 (during his 8 minutes) for the team while getting thrown into a fire is commendable.
brought a lot of energy on the defensive side, which was needed in second half.

In all due respect, I am calling Bellevue because you, Maher, and anyone else who are fans of the +/- are all nuts.😉
If I wind up in Bellevue, it's not going to be because of the +/-. LOL

Seriously, it is just an evaluation tool. Its not meant to be looked at in a vacuum. It's best value is in conjunction with other evaluation tools.

Don’t worry, if you wind up in Bellevue. I will gladly show you around and introduce you to all the nice people. 😁

I get it. But my major beef is we are inundated with stats, it becomes difficult to follow and make sense.

I’m not sure if it’s my damn eyes or backed up by facts, but to me bludgeoning teams on the boards and with defense has made Houston a top team the last five years or so. It’s not pretty, but can be effective.
That’s a perfect comp. Last year they only had two guys averaging 35+ from 3. Also think Kadary being in the Cryer/Sasser role at end of games is pivotal to this team really making a run

You could see he was frustrated w his team not being able to avoid SJU domination on offensive boards & yield so many second chances, as well as succumbing to SJU D pressure.. That said, his choice of words about SJ’s strengths was dumb and locker room fodder when they come to CA as you suggested.
Especially since I'm sure English spent a lot of time in game prep stressing what St. John's did best, and how putting a body on someone under the boards and protecting the ball were needed to win. The fact our guys still did it tells you how good they are at it.

All we have to be is average from the perimeter, as long as the defensive intensity is there for 40 minutes. If we get that, I truly believe this is one of the best (top 10-15) teams in the country.

We're at 31.7% from three right now as a team. Real easy way to get to 33-34%....Scott and Luis have to get into the low 30's instead of 27%, which I think they will, and Zuby & Kadary have to stop shooting threes. Glover getting more PT will probably add a tick to that as well.

I know basketball in general these days is all about the three but with the way Kadary, Smith and RJ get in the lane, with the amount of fouls we draw, I just think there's more than enough offense- especially if we're turning people over- to get us deep into the tournament. But the D has to be there all game, every game.

Good post. If we hit our free throws around a 70% clip as a team, we'll be fine. We're gonna get to the line; we just have to make our freebies. Defense will travel and there will be games in which we'll hit our share from the perimeter. It's gonna come down to making shots from the charity stripe more times than not with this group.
