Providence, Fri., Dec. 20, 8p, FOX

3-7 but... we haven't won there when full capacity since early 2017. a Marcus LoVett masterclass.

A win Friday is long overdue. I remember the loss @PC last year being especially frustrating
It’s too bad we didn’t get to see more of Lovett and Ponds playing together .
That would have been something

Marvin "Bad News**" Barnes's- 66

Bill "Beaver" Smiths- 71

** colorful Friar, one of the greatest college Power Forwards I've ever seen, but....Bad News really meant Bad News:

1. the Pistons would eventually bench "Bad News" Barnes, who said "News didn’t come here to sit on no wood."

2. Often a colorful personality, Barnes once refused to board a plane from Louisville to St. Louis. Because the flight was scheduled to arrive (Central Time) before its departure time (Eastern Time), Barnes famously said, "I ain't getting in no damn time machine." He rented a car instead.

3. star Detroit center Bob Lanier reflected on the dysfunctional Barnes, stating "In the ABA, Marvin Barnes was a great, great player that had issues. They took a chance on him, but Marvin was still into street life and he affected Eric Money. Money (a Detroit product, who played college ball at Arizona) could shoot the in-between jumper and he might’ve been one of the best that ever played. A few years ago I ran into Marvin in Houston and he said, ‘Bob, I used to get get high all the time and Eric started to get high with me.’ When somebody tells you that and this is 20-some odd years later, you want put your fist right through their head. And I adored Marvin Barnes – I liked his personality and he's as charming a guy as you'd ever want to meet. But in terms of him trying to be part of the team that wins a championship ... man..."

4. Barnes's nickname "Bad News" was derived from his frequent off-court problems, which began when he was a senior at Central High School. He was part of a gang that attempted to rob a bus. Barnes was quickly identified, as he was wearing his state championship jacket with his name embroidered on it.

5. In 1972, while playing center for Providence College, Barnes attacked a teammate with a tire iron.

6. Barnes violated probation on October 9, 1976, when an unloaded .38 caliber pistol and five loose bullets were found in his bag at the Detroit Metro Airport as he was preparing to board a flight to St. Louis. On May 16, 1977, he was sent to the Adult Correctional Institute in Cranston, Rhode Island, where he served 152 days. Upon release he returned to the Detroit Pistons. Barnes was later arrested for burglary, drug possession, and trespassing.
Great recap on a real character. I was living in RI at the time and vividly remember points 4 and 5.

I left one out, Marvin is on the Celtics, sitting on the bench next to Tiny Archibald, snorting cocaine he's hidden under a towel, when Tiny and another palyer realized what he was doing they moved away from him on the bench.

Best one is him refusing to get on the airplane/time machine, now that is actually funny. Point 2

Committing a robbery in your HS state champ jacket with your name embroidered on it is pretty good too. Point 4

Driving to PC for this game, very excited to be in that gym. Been trying to make this trip for 3 years and there's usually been a snow storm or something in the way.
A couple of years ago I got seats through SJU behind the basket, at a table. Face value-$400. :) But we didn't pay that.

Out of all the years of my going to away games, Providence leads the pack, something like 20+ games there but that includes the Ocean City Classic in 1974, three game tournament. Which we won, beating South Carolina along the way who had a guy named Jackie Gilloon from NJ. Nothing special there, just liked his name. (When googling his name for spelling verifiction, saw that he passed away a few years ago at age 65). It's a pretty simple Amtrak ride, drops you off about two blocks away from the arena. And there's a hotel that connects to a mall that connects to the arena so you don't have to bear the Rhode Island weather.

Also includes the game where Jayson Williams had an encounter with a PC fan involving a chair. I was sitting with another SJU fan who was arguing with PC fans after that incident, who disappeared leaving me alone. But I survived.

The Sly Fox used to run bus trips up there and pre-game festivities were held at what some people call a "gentlemen's club" close to the Providence Civic Cener/The Dunk/Amica.

The providence matchup will be completely different as they have the athletes depaul doesn’t. We need to play with the same intensity and limit turnovers. PC game will be a close one and a tough place to play. We are going to need to win more than half these road games to get where we want to be. This will be a big one to get against at PC team that hasn’t yet found it’s stride.
If we come to play defense, we should win…we have more talent irrespective of Hopkins

Going to be the usual biased road whistle in the Dunk, so our roster depth will be tested. Expect 1 or 2 of our guys with 2 fouls when they take their sweats off. Does 2 fouls and sit to halftime apply here?

Fair points. I feel our offensive rebounding and physicality could be a difference maker. I think we can get PC on their heels driving ball and generating FT opportunities. Obviously taking crowd out of game as early as possible would be a plus, but easier said than done.

My chronic gripe has been taking care of the ball and patient ball sharing/ movement, which granted is often more difficult on the road.
Agree 100%…big believer in getting layups or FTs before settling for 3s

Wonder if that s why RP sat RJ to start game…he is so aggressive and tends to get early fouls

65,,, nice recap of your trips to the City once ruled by another colorful character, Mayor Buddy Cianci**, and home to some fine Italian restaurants, IL Forno and Caprricio among two of the best. Being the red-headed stepchild to Boston leaves the locals with a "knock this battery off my shoulder" attitude, that carries over to their loutishness. For our Johnnies rooters who travel to this game, good luck, enjoy and bring home an important "W". Visit Federal Hill for great Italian shops, also where there's many bars and restaurants.

The Friartown Faithful are a loud obnoxious bunch, so there is an intimidation factor that seems to sway the refs.

** Cianci was forced to resign from office during both mayoral tenures due to felony convictions. His first administration ended in 1984 when he pleaded no contest to charges brought against him involving kidnapping and torturing a man Cianci believed was romantically involved with his ex-wife. His second stint as mayor ended when he was forced to resign following his conviction for one count of racketeering conspiracy, and he served four years in federal prison.
