Providence, Fri., Dec. 20, 8p, FOX

This is a good early test on the road in the league. Should be a decent barometer of where the team is at the moment. A solid win would say that a top-3 finish in the league is realistic. Lose and there is a lot more doubt about that. I think the reason Pitino & Co have been coaching the team so hard (and generating unhappiness with some players) is because they know the margin for error this season is slim to none. This is a game that may make the difference between slim and none.
Ah, there it is again. The next "Barometer" game. 🤣

If we're going to accomplish big things this season this is a game we have to win. Providence is not that good even with Hopkins. They've had one good performance this year and four bad ones. Our roster is significantly better than theirs. I think we have two win at least 2 out of the next 3 BE road games (Prov, Creighton, X) and losing this one puts us behind the ball there and would make it a long 11 days until that Creighton game.

Stylistically this sets up well for us on the offensive end again. They switch everything 1-4 and make teams beat them 1 on 1. They try to completely take away the 3 point line. They don't force any turnovers but have been decent on the glass but did just get shredded there by the Bonnies. Offensively they are going to launch 3s whenever they can. Almost half their FG attempts are 3s. Definitely a good thing for us that we just prepped for DePaul who is very similar to Providence in that they both want to take 3s on offense and run teams off the 3 point line on defense.

A couple things concern me though. Providence is going to have 6 days to prep for this game coming off a tough loss to the Bonnies. They'll probably alter their scheme a bit to let us shoot more (something DePaul didn't do) and might even throw some zone looks at us. The second thing that concerns me is that this is going to be our first true road game and Providence is never an easy place to play no matter how good or bad they are. A lot of veterans on this team but none of them have played in a true road game since March. Always hesitant to back a team in their first road game this deep into the season.

after last night... think Vegas sets this one around -7.5

I've watched Providence a good amount.... they are not good. do they have some players- yes... but very un-impressive so far. The DUNK/AMP will be the best thing they have going this year... one of the toughest venues in the BE....

All that said....

I expect a work-man like 20pt win... not a blow-out 20pt win.

Fair points. I feel our offensive rebounding and physicality could be a difference maker. I think we can get PC on their heels driving ball and generating FT opportunities. Obviously taking crowd out of game as early as possible would be a plus, but easier said than done.

My chronic gripe has been taking care of the ball and patient ball sharing/ movement, which granted is often more difficult on the road.

Want Brady to see 1 go in. I know he is struggling and a bit gun shy (passed up an open 3 last night) right now.

He is an important piece, a sniper who every really good team needs. Need him to get his confidence back.
Comfortable with the first 6. Anything after that is a noticeable drop-off.

Marvin "Bad News**" Barnes's- 66

Bill "Beaver" Smiths- 71

** colorful Friar, one of the greatest college Power Forwards I've ever seen, but....Bad News really meant Bad News:

1. the Pistons would eventually bench "Bad News" Barnes, who said "News didn’t come here to sit on no wood."

2. Often a colorful personality, Barnes once refused to board a plane from Louisville to St. Louis. Because the flight was scheduled to arrive (Central Time) before its departure time (Eastern Time), Barnes famously said, "I ain't getting in no damn time machine." He rented a car instead.

3. star Detroit center Bob Lanier reflected on the dysfunctional Barnes, stating "In the ABA, Marvin Barnes was a great, great player that had issues. They took a chance on him, but Marvin was still into street life and he affected Eric Money. Money (a Detroit product, who played college ball at Arizona) could shoot the in-between jumper and he might’ve been one of the best that ever played. A few years ago I ran into Marvin in Houston and he said, ‘Bob, I used to get get high all the time and Eric started to get high with me.’ When somebody tells you that and this is 20-some odd years later, you want put your fist right through their head. And I adored Marvin Barnes – I liked his personality and he's as charming a guy as you'd ever want to meet. But in terms of him trying to be part of the team that wins a championship ... man..."

4. Barnes's nickname "Bad News" was derived from his frequent off-court problems, which began when he was a senior at Central High School. He was part of a gang that attempted to rob a bus. Barnes was quickly identified, as he was wearing his state championship jacket with his name embroidered on it.

5. In 1972, while playing center for Providence College, Barnes attacked a teammate with a tire iron.

6. Barnes violated probation on October 9, 1976, when an unloaded .38 caliber pistol and five loose bullets were found in his bag at the Detroit Metro Airport as he was preparing to board a flight to St. Louis. On May 16, 1977, he was sent to the Adult Correctional Institute in Cranston, Rhode Island, where he served 152 days. Upon release he returned to the Detroit Pistons. Barnes was later arrested for burglary, drug possession, and trespassing.

Friday night, St. John's will try to win on the road in Providence for the first time since February 6th, 2021. The away arena has been a house of horrors for the Red Storm, they've only won 5 times there since the 2000 season.
