I agree that a loss against Villanova wouldn't change the Johnnie's season. There's still a lot of basketball to play. Villanova is top ranked and the player match ups certainly favor Villanova.

A Johnnie's win would create excitement about a possible bid to the tournament. A win will have to be earned with some excellent play tommorow night.

I'm excited to see how well the Johnnie's can play against a top ranked team.

St. John’s is Surging, and Opportunity Knocks Wednesday

The Red Storm were 1-5 in BIG EAST play and it was looking like a young team with some heightened expectations was going to be a year away. In the second season of the Mike Anderson Era, as much as a starving fanbase is waiting for St. John’s to find and sustain success, that could have been understandable with so many young pieces following an unprecedented offseason. But, Posh Alexander’s motor hasn’t stopped, and neither has the Red Storm’s. St. John’s has won four in a row, and five of its last six, to hop into sixth place in the BIG EAST at 5-6.

What’s been the difference?

“Toughness,” said Julian Champagnie after Sunday’s 75-73 win at Marquette.

The Red Storm have certainly elevated their toughness, and the results are showing on the defensive end. Over the last six games, St. John’s has allowed just 69.8 points per game. Over the previous six before that, a 1-5 stretch, the Johnnies were allowing 86.2 points per game and allowed over 90 on three separate occasions. A common thread to the recent surge? Junior forward Josh Roberts has started each game and the players have talked about his presence in setting the tone to games defensively.

In Sunday’s win over the Golden Eagles, the defense came up huge, turning 12 MU turnovers into 19 points. Instead of falling short down the stretch, the Red Storm are finishing games. On Sunday, with less than two minutes on the clock in a one-point game, Alexander stole the ball from Marquette point guard D.J. Carton and finished on the break to push the lead to 71-68 with 1:26 left. After two Marquette made free throws, freshman Dylan Addae-Wusu scored a tough bucket on the drive. That’s the revealing thing about this run for the Johnnies. Their freshman duo has performed, and Champagnie, who had 22 points on Sunday, leads the conference in scoring.

In big spots, underclassmen are delivering, and it’s rubbing off on the rest of the roster.

“I think they’re growing up,” said Anderson of his young players. “That’s when you’ve been battle-tested, when you’ve been in the fire. When you’re talking about freshmen making those kinds of plays.  That tells me they’re getting better.”

I'd obviously be thrilled with a win, but am hoping for a competitive game. Fact is, none of the teams we've beaten recently are close to Nova level. Without Bouknight, UCONN is just another middle of the pack Big East team. We've certainly improved, but it's gonna take a magical game by us, and a horrendous game by Nova, for us to pull off an upset. As Logen said, this ain't a make or break game for us. We'll play hard and hope for the best.

You mean a magical game like this:

Last place team 0-11 in the conference beats the No. 1 team in the country for their first league win.

That Nova team was full of NBA players. Wow

I'm not really worried about this game I'm more worried about the after. These kids are putting an emotional high on this game and if we lose in ugly fashion I worry about the team psych afterwards.

If I'm coach Anderson I'm strongly considering backing off the pressure tomorrow night. Gillespie isn't turnover prone and I think you can expect Villanova to be able to beat our press. Once they handle our pressure, then you are basically giving up open corner and wing threes or layups. They are too well coached and prepared. Don't see them getting rattled like most other teams and rushing into bad decisions. Some token pressure is fine but I would be very hesitant to overcommit and over extend. They will make us pay.

Maybe just play them straight-up in man to man.

Not only does it go away from what we do best as a team, nova is one of the last teams I want to see in a half court back and forth game. They’ll execute us to death. Of course they may just do that against our press anyway. Regardless I wanna go down doing what we do best.

This may not be a break game, but it's certainly a make game.   Win tonight and we are the buzz of the Big East.

Bring our A game, tough defense, protect the ball, get good looks, don't back down, and we will see where it lands.   Perfect time to play Villanova as we trend up.    Not mandatory to win, kind of like a practice SAT.   Do extremely well with a win and the league is put on notice.

Guaranteed Villanova will not take us lightly.

By the end of the day today, we will all have a better idea of where this team stands going forward.

Duke of Earlington" The Thrilla in Carnesseca.

Id like to see the Duke get back on track offensively tonight.  Nova doesnt really have a big so if the Duke can find his rhythm, there are alot of minutes to be had.

I think we get good Duke tonight!

We’ll need either one of him or Moore to have a good game off the bench.

Does anyone know what radio station the games on tonight, I'm going out with customers for dinner and want to listen. Thanks in advance....

More like both of them.

They seem to be either or so far this season.

Not surprisingly, Nova near the top of many BE team stats, but they are 10th in rebounding and last in blocks and steals. Posh, Dunn, Wusu, Williams (if playing) and Champ ought to be able to take the ball strong to the hoop w/o a shot blocker to be afraid of (that is, if refs aren't giving them too many flop calls).  Also Daniels will turn the ball over (see his Tulane stats) so either Posh or Dunn may be able to turn him over in their half court offense. Hoping for the best, a fairly close game even if we don't win.

Sometimes the basketball gods are kind. Have a K of C Zoom meeting from 7:30-8:30, but saved by 9 pm start!  Go Johnnies!!
