St. John’s is Surging, and Opportunity Knocks Wednesday
The Red Storm were 1-5 in BIG EAST play and it was looking like a young team with some heightened expectations was going to be a year away. In the second season of the Mike Anderson Era, as much as a starving fanbase is waiting for St. John’s to find and sustain success, that could have been understandable with so many young pieces following an unprecedented offseason. But, Posh Alexander’s motor hasn’t stopped, and neither has the Red Storm’s. St. John’s has won four in a row, and five of its last six, to hop into sixth place in the BIG EAST at 5-6.
What’s been the difference?
“Toughness,” said Julian Champagnie after Sunday’s 75-73 win at Marquette.
The Red Storm have certainly elevated their toughness, and the results are showing on the defensive end. Over the last six games, St. John’s has allowed just 69.8 points per game. Over the previous six before that, a 1-5 stretch, the Johnnies were allowing 86.2 points per game and allowed over 90 on three separate occasions. A common thread to the recent surge? Junior forward Josh Roberts has started each game and the players have talked about his presence in setting the tone to games defensively.
In Sunday’s win over the Golden Eagles, the defense came up huge, turning 12 MU turnovers into 19 points. Instead of falling short down the stretch, the Red Storm are finishing games. On Sunday, with less than two minutes on the clock in a one-point game, Alexander stole the ball from Marquette point guard D.J. Carton and finished on the break to push the lead to 71-68 with 1:26 left. After two Marquette made free throws, freshman Dylan Addae-Wusu scored a tough bucket on the drive. That’s the revealing thing about this run for the Johnnies. Their freshman duo has performed, and Champagnie, who had 22 points on Sunday, leads the conference in scoring.
In big spots, underclassmen are delivering, and it’s rubbing off on the rest of the roster.
“I think they’re growing up,” said Anderson of his young players. “That’s when you’ve been battle-tested, when you’ve been in the fire. When you’re talking about freshmen making those kinds of plays. That tells me they’re getting better.”
