“Ponds is the linchpin to everything St. John’s does. He’s a good three-point shooter (36-for-90, 40%), he’s an effective scorer off the dribble who can finish at the rim with a variety of acrobatic moves that create space despite his 6’1″, 180 pound frame, and he’s skilled at drawing fouls around the basket (his 44.9% free throw rate — FT attempts divided by FG attempts — is one of the tops in the country; he’s 79-for-97 at the line). His ballhandling and vision is key to their transition game. And in the half court, they need his ability to attack the basket and kick it out to open shooters in the corners when defenses collapse on him. Without him on the floor, defenses don’t have to collapse on drivers, which in turn takes away their open looks from three-point range. For a team who takes 40% of their shots from three-point range, that’s a big problem.

Ponds is officially listed as day-to-day. I’d expect him to play, but with St. John’s who knows? Marcus LoVett was listed as day-to-day for damn near three months last season and wound up missing nearly the entire season.

Creighton is in nearly the same boat at this point, unfortunately. With Damien Jefferson also day-to-day, and Jacob Epperson done for the season, Creighton’s bench is woefully thin.

“Without Damien today, there were a couple of times where I felt like Marcus needed a break, or we just needed to get him off the floor for a second to calm him down, and we couldn’t,” Greg McDermott said in his postgame radio show after the loss to Villanova. “Ty-Shon had a stretch in the second half where he was a little rushed, too. But I talked to my staff, and we were like, we just have to roll with it — we have to go with what we have.”

“It was unfortunate DJ couldn’t go today,” McDermott continued. “He’s played some good basketball for us. I don’t know for certain when we’ll get him back, but I’m hopeful we can get him back on the practice floor soon and at least have him for part of this next road trip.”

If Jefferson remains out for Creighton, and Ponds remains out for St. John’s, this might well become a war of attrition on Wednesday night between two teams riding their top six or seven players.”

With a win on Wednesday, Creighton can become the first visiting men's basketball program to ever beat St. John's at Carnesecca Arena in four consecutive seasons.

Since joining the BIG EAST, Creighton is 13-2 across all sports at Carnesecca Arena:

Volleyball 6-0
MBB 3-0
WBB 4-2

I think after the Marquette W people overreacted a bit as to how much of a home court advantage CA is. Pretty clear now, especially after losing to DePaul twice (or more?) in a row, that our advantage there is overblown.

What's funny about Creighton is I went to the MSG game during their first year in the Big East (when they had Doug). They were ranked #12 I believe, and we beat them. They haven't been nearly as good since yet we can't beat them at CA.

Small sample, but going 1-0 against #12 Creighton at MSG and 0-3 vs unranked Creighton at CA should be noted.

What an asinine quote. This is what you get from an inexperienced coach and inexperienced assistants who don't know the college game. If they don't make the dance this year, he should be fired. Ridiculous comments. I don't want to hear the excuses that his son is far away and his family split up.

Surprisingly, I've seen a lot of Creighton fans down on McDermott this year. They're rebuilding after several successful seasons and losing a player to the NBA, but despite that still in contention (especially if they beat us). Not sure what their fans expect.

Thanks. I found it and set up the DVR. Hopefully its really on down here.

Creighton is the main attraction in that town. It's admirable the fan support they get, but also have high expectations apparently.

He's a very good coach and just one reason why the Big East is such a competitive league top to bottom. Winning away is a tough proposition and winning at home not a given
Since we broke an even longer losing streak against G-Town (down in D.C.) earlier, I guess it is time for Mullin to end this Creighton streak.

I live and die with this team and am so much nicer to be around when we win.

Come on guys, do it for my wife!

P.S. Tony in Fairfield, you are being punished, Syracuse any time of the year sucks, but the middle of winter is the worst.
So true. The team needs to get a win tonight. A loss will make getting into the NCAA tournament an uphill battle and not making the NCAA tournament would be a huge disappointment with the talent of our starting five. I hope to see Ponds out there tonight as I don't see how this team can overcome playing without one of the better point guards in the country.

I was extremely optimistic about our team last season until Lovett stopped playing and more so this year after the arrival of Figueroa and Heron. It will get harder to maintain that optimism if we come up short of the NCAA tournament. There is always the proverbial next season but that is often the same as the year before.

I am trying to get myself pumped up for the game tonight but have a very uncertain feeling that I didn't have before I saw Ponds wasn't going to play against DePaul. I love being a fan of this team but the last few seasons have been very challenging as have too many seasons for a very long time.

I apologize for the rambling but I have to believe many of us feel the same.

Creighton has 3 players (7', 6'11", 6'9") that are taller than anyone he has.

Years of experience should tell us how tonight will play out - (1) it will be announced that Ponds will play, (2) many uninformed fans will celebrate, assuming we can't possibly now lose to Creighton at home and (3) we'll get whomped.

Creighton's only player over 6'7" who will play tonight is Krampejl who is 6'9". Epperson who is 6'11" is out for the season and I do not see anyone on their roster who is 7'0". They are not a big team, especially with Epperson out.

Freshman Sampson Froling is listed as 7' tall. Checked their stats, averaging 10.5 minutes, 4.7 puts, 2.2 reb.

That's just the type of kid who kills us. He's the type of kid who will have his game of the year against us. Not saying that we can't overcome it especially if we can bury our 3's consistently but we all know how it goes against us with kids like that.

If Ponds doesn't play and play well we can lose to anyone. That is the reality. If Ponds back thing doesn't linger and he gets back out there we will be fine and make tourney as 8 or 9 seed which is what many of us hoped for before year started.

I haven't been either pro or anti Mullin as far as coaching this team goes. But, if we don't make the NCAA Tournament this season then maybe something needs to change. I'm still hopeful but I agree with you Andrew, tonight is a must win. Otherwise it's Big East Tournament Championship or bust.
