Smits averages 2 points and 9 minutes per game. This is not Rik Smits...
Lol ok. You see their game today?
Level of competition was dreadful. Need to see him versus a team that can provide a challenge. While he was "scoring at will" he also had 3 T/O's and only 1 Rebound in 13 minutes. Always helps being 7'1" but over 3 years at Valpo most he averaged was 12 points and 1 block.
7-1 with touch has to be respected. Roberts as great as he’s been will be giving up 5 inches.

I get it, but it’s his first game that he scored at all and the opponent was atrocious. It’s good to get him some burn in a game like that, but he likely won’t get a ton vs us. If so I’d plant Steere on him a bit as he’s also getting his first minutes.

Agree. Smits had some excellent moves down low. Can't allow him to get the ball without a double team Coach Anderson knows this already.Since Smits wheels left and right I would have someone waiting as he turns around Roberts and charges into his helper.

Their fans have zero idea of what SJU does. One guy expecting huge double digit wins because of our “over aggressive” defense. They’re gonna have a harder time than they think. We’ve beat some pretty good teams this season and are a lot deeper. I’m ready to go at it here.

I don’t know Smits’ back story but he had attempted exactly 3 shots until a 30 point blowout against a completely overmatched opponent. Maybe he is the second coming of Kareem and just got eligible or is coming off an injury but I seriously doubt SJU is designing a defensive scheme to negate him.

Agree, any somebody was mentioning doubling him... he has done nothing except on game against an awful team. Doubling him????

It was his 3rd game of the year. Joining a team that was rolling. Maybe they were taking advantage of the opportunity to work him in slowly. I can only imagine what you would say if, let’s say after butler we had one more cupcake against Mount St Mary’s, and in that game Steere were to go off to the tune of 16 points in 10 minutes.

I’m not saying he’s not good. He’s a grad transfer and has a ton of experience. We have played big guys like the ones from WVU and Arizona before. Just saying after one decent game I doubt we start doubling him. If he makes us do that, then Butler is gonna be that much better and we are in trouble. I hope Steere gets a little more time on the court anyway. We can use his size and those fouls etc. Smits is a lot further along than Steere regardless.

Key stat: Baldwin has just 10 total points on 4-for-28 shooting over his last three games. He has also not attempted a single free throw during this stretch. Due or remains cold?

Smits isn't a bad player and gives Butler a deeper bench. He probably won't get a lot of minutes on Tuesday but we have to be aware of him when he is in the game

We have the type of high energy defense that could keep him on ice. On the other hand, I am a life long Johnnies fan, so I also look at those stats and say......uh oh.

Agree totally. I just think that with Anderson here, we don’t walk into a ton he hasn’t seen nor is unaware of. His consistency of record over a large body of work makes me feel like we go into plenty of games a ton more prepared than we have in the past under other coaches. There will still be times we get smashed but it’s not gonna be a mystery why.

Sears after practice with Heron participating apparently

Interesting matchup. Butler usually seems to be more finesse and making tons of 3's. But we are usually more scrappy and athletic. If we can stick to our usual formula of good rebound margin, forcing lots of TO's, and playing good defense, we could be in good shape. One thing is for sure though, if we leave tons of shooters open for 3 like in some OOC low major games, we won't have the luxury of them missing a bunch. They will be right at home playing like that.

I found Harkins' analysis of St John's on point and he accurately points out ways Butler could win. I really like the breakdown of the St John's players. Harkins has scouted them very well. He accurately points out a weakness in CMA's system. I'm an Arkansas alumnus and surrendering the three has cost us some important games. It's a calculated risk that Mike will take. It usually pays off, but sometimes it bites his teams in the ass.
Additionally, it is important to mention that surrendering 3-point shots is not something new in Coach Anderson’s system. While at Arkansas, his opportunistic defensive scheme consistently surrendered a high percentage of points from beyond the arc.

But, Harkins overlooks Mike Anderson's coaching experience and the heart in this blue collar team. The Johnnies are playing above their expected abilities and they have the confidence after defeating Arizona. Mike will have this team ready for whatever Butler tries to do. The Johnnies will have a few surprises planned for the Bulldogs. I do agree it will be a very close game and should be exciting for the fans.

Harkins predicts : Butler Bulldogs – 69, St. John’s Red Storm – 64

I predict St John's will win by 5. St John's 69-Butler 64 It's going to be a dogfight ;) till the end.

Not only does this matchup mark the conference-opener for both teams but it also signifies a meeting between two of the most pleasant surprises in all of college basketball so far this season. Butler and St. John’s were both expected to finish in the bottom three of the Big East this year but are touting a combined record of 23-3 heading into this game with eight KenPom Top 100 wins between them (six by Butler).

Butler might be the nationally-ranked team (and expected favorite) in this game but St. John’s will boast the home-court advantage in Carnesecca Arena. With tip-off approaching, let’s dive a bit deeper into this matchup by analyzing St. John’s as an opponent, three potential keys to success for Butler, and a pregame Hark’s Bark.
