Potential Grad Transfers

Should have said “scheduling” of a visit
Now I'm even more confused. Are you able to tell us with whom we are scheduling a visit?
No, just my expectation
Got it, thanks. Assuming both Yakwe and Owens leave, we have three scholarships to give, right? What do you think the staff is targeting? One grad transfer, one sit-out, and an uncommitted class of '18 signee (ala Trimble and Wilson)?
Last I heard, after Owens situation, 2 grad transfer bigs & 1 sit out transfer.

Of course this is a highly fluid situation. Would think Matt A has a very long list to review. Considering high volume of transfers, it is not easy to get ball moving quickly, (unless you had someone in your hip pocket) Even then, the best plans can go in the dumper due to a lot of reasons.

My gut says he comes up with a big or two who will help to position a good returning group to contend for a Dance spot.

Fair enough, which is why Coach Mullin has to help Matt convince a talented grad transfer that we are a good destination for them. If we don't replace the guy we appear to be losing with at least comparable talent and add another serviceable big man, future doesn't look bright. Suspect part of their sales challenge may be that until he says so, it is not certain that Shamorie will return.

Certainly agree on your first point & think CM is good at closing. Not to beat a dead horse, but we need another recruiter to beat the bushes in coordinated fashion with Matt.

All eggs in one basket, contrary to best recruiting practices, is the problem as my friend Panther adeptly pointed out.
Why do you say we aren't a good destination with potential competitive team and possible starting role available? That would seem attractive to me.
(1) perennial losing record; (2) lack of an attractive campus; (3) sub-part facilities; and (4) limited, if any track record of staff developing players and sending them to the NBA.

Because (a) the allure of playing for two BB Hall of Famers has worn off and, (b) three consecutive losing seasons with half your recruits leaving is easy to recruit against.

Recruiting has been haphazard at best and the entire staff shares in the blame. There is no reason TT in Lubbock, Texas should field a better group of players. There is no reason Rick Stansbury in year two in Bowling Green Kentucky had a better team. There are a dozen shit hole locations I wouldn't defecate in that players go to that should be considering St. John's.
Going into year four the staff needs to make a recruiting "statement" in November with early commits. Period.

There looks to be a decent amount of 13 and 7 guys who could potentially be available if they want a change of scenery. If Matt reels one in, we are in decent shape. If he pulls two of them in, I think we could make a lot of noise if styles of play mesh well.

Add to the above general negatives a couple more that may impact recruiting a grad transfer big man or two this year: (i) until Shamorie pulls his name from draft it is not certain he'll return which clearly impacts team's competitiveness and (ii) of three best big men staff have recruited to date, one (Sima) transferred after a little over a year, another (Owens) appears about to transfer and third (Yakwe) has regressed and is rumored to be strongly considering transfer. That is why Coach needs to get involved in selling prospects that our program can be a good fit for big men.

Give me a guy that can consistently score low double digits and rebound and another borderline guy like that. That will make me happy

All good points, but i think analysis for grad transfer is somewhat different. I think heavily weighted toward the playing time factor. Don't think campus is that big a deal for one year and player probably thinks they are already developed. Answer is probably somewhere in the middle.

Chance to play in the dance could be a big factor also for some especially those who have never tasted it.

For most of better grad transfers, suspect that is the biggest factor, as in most cases they presumably are getting plenty of playing time where they are.

I guess except for the guys who grad transferred out of here, all of whom would have had plenty of PT yet inexplicably left. Sheesh.

That and a couple of lobster rolls and a pale ale (or two).:)
Very true especially since spring is here :)
Albany guard Joe Cremo told ESPN he is transferring. Averaged 18, 4 and 4 this past season. Grad transfer. Love his game.
Damn UAlbany hit hard lost their top two guys. They are both good I've watched them play a few times, Nichols is a baller and Cremo is nice too.
