(POST GAME) Xavier (MSG), Mon. Feb. 17, 6:30pm, FS-1 / 970AM

The last 5 minutes of this game had nothing to do with a talent disparity. Awful shot selection (primarily by 1 guy) and poor execution when they got the ball back with a chance to win.
Obviously a pet peeve of mine but we have no talent disparity. Defense and hustle are talents, we put up 70+ “talentless” points in 37 minutes and then a lack of talent takes over? I don’t buy it. Our “best player” shoots horrendously but then decides he is going to win the game on his own? We have talent, we just don’t know how to win.
Of course we have talent. This is Big East basketball. Our guys hustle and work hard nearly every play. But if defense and hustle is part of talent, then so is basketball IQ. So if trusting your teammates. So is rising to the moment. None of these were on display with the game on the line. That we need an upgrade in talent is true beyond a single doubt. Every game, taller, longer and more athletic players are getting rebounds right over the backs of our guys without fouling, purely by using their superior size and athleticism.

There are players on the way that should fit perfectly with CMA's style. But right now, there isn't enough liquor in my cabinet to make me feel any better.
So you think we have enough talent to win 38 minute games but our guys turn into pumpkins after that? I don’t, Every team has deficiencies in talent and can use more but IMO we have enough talent to win now. And by the way, those taller, longer, more athletic players got exactly one more offensive rebound tonight than we did. They got more defensive rebounds simply because we took and missed more shots. But funny how those more athletic players turned the ball over so much against our unathletic team. We have enough talent to win now and the lame excuse that our lack of talent is the reason we don’t have a better record is nonsense. We beat ourselves down the stretch of games
Champaignie went charles smith on us at one point. Doh!!

He played well tonight though. But that sequence of missed layups was brutal.
He wasn't the only one. How about Roberts blowing a layup and dunk earlier and slow footed Caraher blowing put backs.

Looking forward to next year's team, with more shooters.

Can't remember the last time I've seen a road team win, despite being -18 in turnover margin.

Actually, Butler came close. They were -17 in turnover margin, and beat us.

That is hard to do, and we've "accomplished" this twice. So, I don't want to hear an analyst, in the upcoming Creighton and Marquette home game, say that a team can't turn it over against us, "especially on the road," because they certainly can.

There's a floater that is taken 2 to 3 feet from the basket not Fiqueroa's chuck behind the foul line. That's a floater?
I believe in all three big east wins SJU had a double digit lead with five minutes to go. Many other games they had smaller leads with five minutes to go and blew them all. Tonight they had seventy points with more than five minutes to go and ended up with seventy four.
They cannot make a shot in crunch time. In just about all of their non conference wins they had comfortable leads with five to go. Hopefully Cole next year will turn out to be a clutch shooter.
What was surprising tonight was SJU got a terrible game from LJ, no points from Roberts and Caraher in thirty minutes , shoot thirty five per cent from the floor and take a good team down to the
wire. What a difference a couple of shooters could have made to this season. The
Common theme....playing not to lose with too much time left. We had them on their heels and needed to continue to attack. Too many bad shots by LJ.

They were 5-7 for a reason. Average, at best, guard play. We turned them over at will.

Gotta be better then this year. Just one thing and I'm very serious about this, I'm really hoping LJ goes or you know what you'll get every game. 15 30ft 3 point shots where he make 3 of them. With him it's just catch, he's thinking what to do with it, ahhh screw it I'll just launch it and pray it goes in. His shot is becoming a joke.

That's what cma calls it I guess, I don't know basketball anymore.

Revisionist history, but this team would have been better had LJ stayed in the transfer portal, and had Heron gone pro. Would have given Anderson more of a chance to work with his type of players.

Now, I would have been first on the panic line had this happened over the offseason, but even if the record were slightly worse, I might have felt better about things (but probably not, because I hate losing).

How Figueroa can look any of his teammates in the face after that game, I don’t know. You’re supposed to be a leader of this team and instead of deferring to the 3 or 4 guys who lead them to that point, he just starts selfishly chucking the ball from all spots of the court. It’s really inexcusable and it’s shocking. He’s regressed big time this season.
100% correct. With 1 minute and 29 seconds remaining he takes a bomb from God's country, especially since he was shooting 2 for 15 at that time.. We needed to penetrate and pick up a foul,
Heat check.

We can agree on this, which is what i wrote in my first post: The game was lost by just awful play in the end game. Just so unusual for a home team to blow 4 late leads this year. Looie's style kept lesser teams closer than they should have been, but our good teams turned it on when they had to.

Two things. With 10 seconds left they should have driven to the hoop. If fouled it would have been the 10 on Xavier giving us 2 shots. Also I've watched a number of games where we need 3 point shooters on the court at the end. Caraher is never put on the court. We lost this game because of poor coaching in the last 3 minutes

I dont think we get enough play in the box...as with Mullin we often have guys on the 3 point line passing around perimeter....you dont have to be 7 ft tall to float the baseline...

Troll or oblivious much?

Yes no doubt ! I totally agree. Terrible shot
Also Caraher in far too long with Julian C on bench just brutal
Another horrible loss when we should have won

LJ looked terrible tonight because when SJU gets into its half court offense they have no shooters and other than Dunn driving to the basket no one can create a shot other than LJ. Xavier , like most big east teams play tough half court defense and if SJU doesn't score off a turnover they are pretty much finished.
LJ, Heron, Dunn, Williams, Caraher and Rutherford all shoot 37 or 38 per cent from the field and they play the most minutes and take the majority of shots. It is just a bad shooting team who have really over achieved because of their hard work and pressure defense.I believe they created forty six turnovers in the last two games vs teams that practice against the press for days before playing SJU knowing that is their offense.
I think LJ struggles because he always getting the ball a 3 point line and going one on one with the dribble
If he's back next year, it will be the same thing with him, chucking shots and missing. He needs to go over sea and play for money please.
