(POST GAME) (@UBS Arena) Kansas, Fri,. Dec. 3, 7p, FS-1

Im just going to enjoy the rest of the season and have no expectations.  Unfortunately, the ncaa tourney drought will continue.

On offense we need guys like Mathis, Smith, Wheeler, and Wusu to knock down open shots to keep teams from ganging up on Champ and Posh.   We need better ball movement, crisper cuts on the floor, and less careless ballhandling and passing.

On defense, our transition game thrives by all five guys being capable of guarding there man, pressuring the ball on double teams, and allowing Posh to pick his spots to roam and steal.

We had not done either well vs lesser competition and last night glaring deficiencies present on both ends of the floor against a very good and deep kansas team.

USB Arena

Quick thoughts:

Took me 2 hours and 15 minutes from where I live in NJ which is just 25 miles away.  Obviously that is a NYC problem and not an issue with the arena.

The parking arrangement an strategy needs a lot of work.  It simply has to be improved.

My biggest takeaway is the crowd.  I have never seen more Johnnies apparrell in one place in my life.  Without getting into the MSG vs. UBS debate, we do need need to play some games at UBS.  Geographically, it is clearly Johnny territory and people came out.

Lastly, they have to move the behind-the-basket fans closer to the court.  Our student section was absolutely great last night, but they were about a mile from the court.  Just my two cents.......

In the layouts shown to SJU before the game, the student section looked much closer to the court.   I'm pretty sure this will be worked on and improved for future basketball games.   I understand why there are fences erected so you cannot enter via Hempstead Turnpike by foot.given that is a treacherous road to cross.   The Arena could have been placed on the massive property with parking all around it but I'm sure they chose better visibility from the parkway and turnpike.   The new parking garage hopefully will provide easier access to the stadium.   I found the whole thing confusing, getting dropped off in the ride share area and having to go all the way around the building by foot for pre game.

Very impressed that you chose to travel from NJ for the game - the sign of a great fan.

I would love a coaching job where I can coach a mediocre  team ,lrecruit mediocre players, have a mediocre schedule for yrs and get paid a few million

The failure of every single coach since Carnesecca to build a sustainable winning program and not go directly from SJU to coach anywhere else is a sign of how hard the job is, especially coaching for private schools with $$ constraints.   Lavin and Mullin tenure ended abruptly due to mediocrity.  Roberts, Jarvis, Mahoney ended because of even less successful teams at the end of their tenures.   .  .

It's clear that none of our coaches were given the $$ budgets for staff infrastructure and facilities that other schools enjoy.

I used the Silver lot. We planned on getting there early and arrived at the lot at 5:30 or so, breezed right in - we were in our seats in Section 105 by 5:40. I saw something about people not being let in? We had no such issue and plenty of people were going in with us, we could see what I would call the "main" gate was not open yet, so we entered through the Southeast gate that I believe is also used for Suites.

We stayed for the entire game including the handshake line and still got out of the lot in about two minutes. At that point they forced us West on Hempstead Turnpike which was not beneficial but honestly added about ten minutes to my trip. Seems like my experience was better than some and it surely seems like they have work to do on how to route traffic effectively after the game. Depending on where you parked in the lots I'm sure things got worse over time. And I understand we got there early and everyone didn't have that luxury when deciding where to park.

After going I suspect the South lot is best for anyone who wants to head East on Hempstead Turnpike after the game - can anyone verify that? Also, when I looked at the Arena parking maps Emerald looked like it was only accessible from the Cross Island, both pre and post-game - can anyone verify that?

Yes, Emerald lot can only be accessed off of the Cross Island, exit 26D. In that lot you either walk around the racetrack to the main gate or they have shuttle busses. We were not deep into that lot, so the walk was about 10 mins. If you are all they way in the back of the lot, the walk will be longer. When you leave, you can only go South on the Cross Island.

I'm only a few miles from UBS so I got a ride there.  My uber 10 minute ride home was $21, almost the cost to park.   By the time I got home the price had dropped to $10.

He’s getting criticized, from my point of view anyway, because a few decisions he made, when the game was still very much winnable, cost this team the chance to win the game.

I’m not as ready to give up on all these players trying to learn this system yet, not even close actually, but I am definitely proceeding with caution.

Several keep referring to Anderson's "system"....what is the system and why does it take a half a season to learn ?

I used to see some aggressive defense but that's been missing.  I don't see it or a "system".

*shrugs shoulders*
Shouldn’t every single coach and their coaching staff have some kind of a system, or a philosophy, or, at least, a collective train of thought?

You just pulled in 7 (or is it 8?) new players who all came from different coaches so to expect any kind of a full cohesion 7 games into the season seems kind of silly to me.

I played for 2 coaches (varsity HS and AAU) who had pretty different mindsets when it came to styles or “systems” so I’m not shocked they don’t seem on the same page at all. My HS coach was all about pressing and a very fast pace. Hell, we ran primarily a motion offense or 4 corners play and we normally hoisted up a shot within 7-10 seconds. My AAU pressed much less and emphasized a half-court offense with more of a zone defense.

Now, if it’s mid-January and we still look lost, then there’s a major problem.

My take on the Kansas game-

Nice arena with some issues to be fixed-parking, when to open the doors, etc. Surprised to see so many Kansas fans attending. Uber was the way to go.

Missed seeing replays on the giant screens. Seats comfortable and sight lines great.

Refs were bad. Lots of tricky-tacky fouls called, and many fouls missed. Didn’t let the kids play when the should have. They did not however affect the outcome.

Kansas’
#33 McCormack was setting illegal screens all night and used his body to create space (not called).
#30 Agbaji used his off-hand to fend off defenders the whole game. Has great court sense.
#2 Braun played like an All-American-He was everywhere with energy.

The 2 technicals resulting in 4 made free throws and Kansas possession was a knife to the heart. (Inconsistency of the refs had CMA go ballistic.)

Kansas had more FG attempts (70 to 55), and rebounds (47-29). We missed 10 FTs (16-26) and allowed 19 offensive rebounds.

Self is a great coach, and knows when to use timeouts. CMA not so much.

SJU looked very helter skelter the whole game. We still don’t value the ball (17 TOs) and seem to play without a plan.

Posh, Champy and Wusu can play, and they play with heart.

Outlook-
This team will gel and be better than last year’s team and will be dancing in March (April).

Since when are you supposed to lose games?? That’s a losers mentality. Conversely, if you want to use that analogy , his teams also haven’t beaten teams they’re supposed to beat by the amount of points he was supposed to beat them by. FDU, St. Francis, NJIT. All three of those games should have been laughers but they were far from that.

I didn’t mean to imply he doesn’t warrant any criticism. Just pointing out the job is not as easy or forgiving as just a big pay check.

I'm not ready to give up either, but I'm less concerned about the newcomers learning CMA's system, and more concerned about the skill level and athleticism of the newcomers, and how effective they can be in CMA's system.

That’s definitely a legit point. I’m leaning in the direction of skill level unfortunately. Still, I think it’s fair to give them another month and a few league games before anyone jumps ship.
