(POST GAME) St. Peter’s, Wed., Nov. 25, 7p, FS2 / 970 AM WNYM
This was as ugly as it gets. We deserved to lose but didn’t.

If this team doesn’t commit to playing some interior defense we are going to get hammered against bigger teams. Even the last play Posh whiffed and the kid missed the slide by and they had a second opportunity on the tip. Way to easy.

Are we suppose to be happy beating a MAAC team by 1 at home now? I don’t know. I don’t feel good about this game at all.
Posh was out of steam down the stretch. Obvious on both ends. Kid played his heart out and had nothing left in tank in last few minutes.

Right now we are the equivalent of a decent mid major team. Same as St Pete's. Of course it's one game and we didn't have Champ. We'll get better, but so will most teams. Think we found some good things tonight: Cole, Posh and Moore (offense) to name 3. Not sure why CMA played Wusu so much. Thought Earl should have been in for last 5 minutes of game. Of newcomers, wasn't impressed with Toro. Very early, but we did about what I expected; pulled out a win against an evenly matched team.
lol, Wusu has almost half as many points as all the returning players. He wasn’t the problem. The problem was Earlington, Dunn, Robert’s, Caraher, and the rest of the guys who didn’t step up. Talent gap becoming apparent, and it’s obvious that our classes are getting more talented. Need to keep that up and rebuild.

Can't say it was "obvious" tonight. Why is Earlington allowed to brick threes???Toro???

That's what happens when you don't get much time to practice and have a team full of newcomers, it's going to be a learn as you go season, not only for the Johnnies but for other teams as well. This season due to covid is going to be absolutely crazy and unpredictable. There will be some teams with no practice for 2 weeks after a positive test going into a game. There's already been a few upsets tonight.
The color commentator in the UConn game just mentioned the same thing. And, I agree. I just didn't want it to happen to us. ;)

Dylan Wusu, Vince Cole, Isaih Moore and Posh Alexander scored St. John's final 22 points.
Zach B

Thinking the rotation will ultimately shorten with Williams, Caraher abs maybe Roberts receding. Defense has to stiffen. But I think we have many more solid options on offense than previously and a gem at the point.

Re: Wusu who did you want to see in there. I think you probably wanted Dunn but he was clearly hurt and not coming back in. Some could argue Wusu deserved to be out there if Dunn wasn't hurt. Lord know the others didn't.

What do you guys think was up with the vets? Dunn, Gwill and Duke led this team last year. They just let these new kids come in and take the reigns??

Something was off w/ our vets.

New players were as advertised. The talent level is raised. Thought Wusu played solid. Injuries to Dunn and Earlington are concerning. Both took shots to the head.

Posh was excellent. He’s a true freshman carrying the load. Of course there were mistakes but overall he was real good. It’s the defense or lack there of that is troublesome. Toro, Roberts and Earlington waved at players driving to the hoop. Way too easy.

Disagree, St. Peter’s had 10 practices going into the game and lost two top players from last year to transfer. Getting beat consistently off the dribble is not from lack of practice. Defense is desire and starts with taking pride in keeping your man in front of you. Protecting the rim and help rotation should be second nature at this level and we showed neither. I believe it was Mean Gene who pointed out, just a horrible defensive game.

The problem was the defense, and since we can't simply overwhelm the opposition with overall talent, then we're gonna have to dig deep and play harder and smarter on the defensive end.

Disappointed in Dunn and Earl, because they both proved themselves last year as capable players. Roberts and Caraher had their moments, but didn't do it long enough or often enough to prove anything. I'm surprised, but not shocked, that we won by only one. I figured it would be 6-8.

I thought I was told the strength of this team was SJU finally has depth, no?

agree and CMA will have no part of that. He’s a defense-first coach and these kids weren’t up to game speed except for a few of them. It will change and yes we do have depth. This one was tougher than I thought because I expected them to come out MUCH stronger defensively. The losses in the off-season have nothing to do with our defense. We need to up our game fast.

Another thing: I'm a person who try not too get too high or too low after one game or even four or five games. So, we need to put things in perspective. We probably need to use that analogy, more so, in this sort of season.
