Was tied up all day today but recorded the game on my VCR. Will watch later but spoke with Weatherman on my way home and he gave me the lowdown. We continue to take care of business. Very very encouraging so far. Onward and (hopefully) upward.
VCR?  What's that?

I'm very encouraged so far the way we look with 9 newcomers, big test Wednesday night, will tell us a little bit more how good we are or can be.... Go Johnnie's.......

I could be in the minority but Mathis play so far is being overlooked. His activity/quickness defensively is noticeable. He’s a nice compliment to posh picking up full court.

Were you really tied up all day or did you and her take turns? :)
You know Monte well :)

Very encouraged with Posh's 3 point shooting. Looks clear he put in a lot of work on his shot and he seems comfortable and confident when he takes it.  Could be a big key for him and the team to exceed expectations.

You know the thing that could not compare to the quality of Betamax.

Did not follow game I am in NOLA
but from stats seems Wheeler had a nice game but I don’t see comments on his play (?)

Very solid and very in control. Did take 3 3’s which I hope he cuts back but they were good looks and he went 2/3. Hope he bottles up this performance.

He is among the least talented of our players offensively, but he is a perfect fit on defense.  Almost every steal we get, it seems like he's a part of it.  He either gets the steal, or is applying pressure that leads to the steal.

What's most comforting is the fact that it seems we can finally afford a player like that.  In the past, his lack of offense (he missed an easy layup, and a jam yesterday) would be crippling to our team.

Monte, don’t let SJUFAN2 fool you. He is old.

Just watched the game. Great first half. Not worried about 2nd half. Yes we were a little undisciplined and careless, but with the game out of reach, kids have a tendencies to take risks that they wouldn't in a closer game. Also, as others have said, CMA experimented with combinations. I see the rotation coming into focus. The top 8:
Champ
Posh
Mathis
Wheeler
Wusu
Coburn
Soriano
Smith

Next 3:
Stanley
Pinzon(apologies to those of you who had him pegged as Naismith award candidate)
Nyiwe

Of the top 8, Smith most likely to slip to bottom 3. Of bottom 3, Stanley most likely to move up to top 8.

Maybe coach goes with a 9 man rotation. We'll see. No way I see him going for a 10 or 11 man rotation. I still say we could have a problem, against better comp, getting points after Champ and Posh. I love Coburn's game and shot, need to see him do it against Indiana, etc before I anoint him the next Bootsy, who he reminds me of from outside. So far so good. I'm cautiously  optimistic, as I almost always am. .

St. John’s hosted recruits Devere Palmer, Dwayne Pierce, Jaylin Lewis, Devin Vanterpool and Markell Alston from Queens powerhouse Christ the King, per a source.
Zach B

They won't be coming, I had to kick one of them out of my seat.

Other than that they seemed like very nice young men. Unfortunately attendance was lacking (the student section was particularly disappointing) but I think it's hard for a high school kid to watch Anderson's teams play and think anything other than "where do I sign up"

Great post but as president of the Omar Fan club I gotta insist he’s part of the regular rotation. Whether that means he takes one of the top 8 guys spots or coach goes with 9 I’m not sure. In two games not only has he yet to take a poor shot, he hasn’t missed one. 10 for 10 and I’m a little surprised more guys aren’t talking about it.

Fwiw Once Roberts started getting minutes last year we went 9 deep for the most part. Went 9 deep his first year too.

Also, one observation about this team is that many of its skill sets come in twos.  Here is a short list:

Wheeler / Stanley
Smith / Coburn
Mathis / Wusu
Soriano, Champ and Posh are all obviously one-offs tho I assume the hope is for Nyiwe to eventually be able to fill a similar role to Soriano.

Agreed on the guards but I think Stanley will do most of his work in the paint. Not sure Wheeler will be the dirty work guy in the BE.

Think we lost Pearl Washington as a recruit by security kicking him out of a seat at Alumni Hall back in the day. /media/kunena/emoticons/blink.png

Wheeler and Stanley clearly have similar size, length and athleticism and I assume will be used similarly at the point of the press.

I agree that O'mae is strictly an interior player at this point and Wheeler flashed a 3 yesterday. I'm not prepared to call him a sharpshooter off of one game any more than I'm ready to build a statue to Coburn or throw Stef Smith in the dumpster off of one game - my view is that all of the guards can play and they all will contribute in different degrees in different games.

I don't know what Wheeler's eventual fit will be here. Other than. Pinzon he seems to me the least comfortable player out there so far. He contributes, but he isn't playing free and easy like the others. It's as though he's trying to think and play instead of just play. Until he just plays it's hard to tell what role he's going to fill. But he will definitely be a part of the rotation.

Interestingly when Soriano was out coach played Wheeler and Stanley together some, presumably to make up for the loss of size. I'd love to see Nyiwe progress to where he could give us 10 minutes a game behind Soriano. He has an interesting skill set - I don't know if conditioning or something else is holding him back from getting more minutes. Something else could be that Stanley and Wheeler are simply more productive than he is right now, but you can't produce your way to being 6'11" and sometimes you need a guy that size as we've learned the hard way over the years.

And I suspect that Soriano is going to have trouble staying in some games.
