(POST GAME) Providence, Tue., Feb. 1, 9p, CBSSN

Just back from the Arena. Very frustrating loss. I felt that we were going to lose when we screwed up the final seconds of the first half (see Seton Hall at MSG). That said, Posh was absolutely magnificent and almost carried us to victory despite the obvious deficits by the rest of the collective group.

Stat of the game by far:  Minus Posh (3 for 4) the rest of the SJU team shot 14% from the line (1 for 7)
Minus Watson (6 for 11) the rest of the Providence team shot better than 95% from the line (21 for 22)

Rough season.

There is something uninspiring about this team.  I can honestly say, even when we made some nice runs in the 2nd half,  I never felt like we were going to win this game.  Given the lousy free throw shooting, poor rebounding, untimely turnovers, and stagnant half court offense, it was easy to see closing the game was going to be a tall order.

I haven’t posted much since I can’t watch the games, but on paper this seems to end out season. We really need to win the next 3 games given the killer stretch we have coming up. This should end CMAs non-losing season stretch.

I like a lot feel bad for Julian. Maybe the pressure was too much for him and seeing his NBA bubble pop can’t feel good.

I’ll keep positive and hope for a miracle run to end the season. So many of the things you guys post about seem fixable.

I think the most frustrating thing is that most if not all of the major deficiencies are very fixable but it's February and none of them have been fixed even a little bit. And even if they do miraculously fix some of them in the next week, it's too late. Barring a miracle 4 day run at MSG in mid March this season is already toast.

I felt the same way.  After Providence got the lead back to the halftime margin, I was never confident.

We never had the lead, and the ball.

Plus, anytime the Anderson offense goes to work late in the game, you can't have confidence.

The bonehead play at the end of the first half isa big reason we lost this game. It goes back to coaching

There were many bonehead plays. Fouling with 8 seconds left on the shot clock at the end of the game was asinine, doing a pullup on the rim after a dunk.............just to name a few.

Free throw disparity is a joke.

Too many empty possessions after our 47-46 lead.

Got killed by too many baskets as our D held them to last seconds in shot clock.

Smith and Coburn gave us much less than expected this year.  That's why absence of pinzon really has hurt us more than expected.

Mathis has given us what we could've expected.  Was a warrior last night.

Three empty SJ trips at crunch time sealed the verdict.

Kudos to Cragg and AD staff for filling CA for 9pm game.

Nothing else to add.

It is what is is…… yet another disappointing season.

CMA is, by all reports is a good and decent man, but he has not distinguished himself this season with his coaching performance.

College basketball has changed during the past decade to a “long ball game” that emphasizes outside shooting and the 3 point shot which seemingly CMA has not adjusted to on offense or defense (see open shots of St.John’s press, etc.).

Yep, We Certainly Are St. John’s.

Another super disappointing loss that we could have easily won. Agree with mm52 that Mathis has given us everything we could have expected based on his 3 years with Rutgers and has been one of our more effective players the last 3 games.

After they took the 72-70 lead and then give up the 3 to fall behind 73-72 the back to back turnovers on the next 2 possessions, just totally unforced, was the game.

Agreed it is what it is. One thing that gets my goat is the lack of discipline or foresight of these players. Things like stepping on the line when you inbound the ball, taking ill advised shots, setting a solid pick, just baffles me. Some of this in on the coach but I believe some of it lies with the players. Whether its lack of basketball knowledge, instinct or just not getting it seems to be a curse for SJU.

As a side note, one other example I argue with my kids about was last year (they seem to think it was fine, shows competivness). We were down by 7 points with about 4 seconds on the clock and we took the ball out under the Providence baskets. I forget who it was but he rolled the ball up the court as to not take time off the clock. I jumped up out of my seat and was like "you gotta be kidding me", 4 seconds left down by 7 and you roll the ball up the court?  Pure common sense seems to be lacking on these teams.

Yes, Posh played great, but he also made some terrible plays that killed us. Bad foul at the end of the half, some really bad passes. I favor him anyway because his effort level is incredible, but he did make some really bad plays that cost us. And like the whole team, the free throws set us back.

The bright side was Providence +2.5 was the easiest money I've ever made in my life.

The not so bright side is this program sucks and is going no where under this coach. But we just gave him an extension so the school which makes 50k a year per student can't afford to buy him out, and hire a competent coach.
The University does not make $50k a year per student. Not even close.

We don’t defend the ‘3’ because Anderson’s copy of Clair Bee’s Basketball strategy was written before the 3-point shot came into effect. /media/kunena/emoticons/sick.png

Gotta change something up. Sit Champagnie.
I'd start him at center the rest of the season. At least he'd have mismatches there while on offense. He's overthinking the NBA. Time to get back to the most basic basics for him.

It's not like it would be a worse move than having Nyiwe in at the end of a tight game.
Champ would get lit up in the post at center by the big bodies. There is no black and white answer to getting him to hit his shots. Maybe try to set up more mismatches for him, or get him more cuts to the basket. But they are doing that already. He just needs to fight through it and get better.

Where are all the people, who said before the season started that Chanpagnie should and could play the 3, because the NBA evaluators said it would better prepare for the pro's? It has always been obvious that he does not have the skill set to play the 3 at the collegiate or pro level.

You just made me think of something. Champ said that he wanted to play the wing more and less in the paint this year.  But, maybe being match up against 4s and 5s gave him a mobility advantage that he took advantage of.  Now, when a 3 is guarding him, he no longer is quicker than the defender.  He's facing more athletic dynamic defenders.  That takes away his drives to counter when they played him tight on the three point arc. It also has a way of getting in your head, making you feel like you have to get the shot off quicker than you may really need to which impacts even open looks.  I don't think its pressure for the NBA.  But, it could be less favorable matchups.
We don't control who the other team chooses to guard him.
