(POST-GAME) Providence (MSG), Sat. Feb. 9, Noon, CBS SN, 570AM
Think about how many dunks, layups and charge makes, probably a dozen in total, we blow this team out without all those problems, which have been plaguing this team all year.
Good teams do the little simple things right and they do them right consistently all the time. We do not.

Hold on, Chris just called a timeout. :)
I get the timeout being funny LAUGH OUT LOUD!!! This game was not lost on timeouts it was lost on effort from all involved. We did have 4 TV timeouts for motivation!!!!
Agree, was just working my frustration off w lame joke.
Time to jump back on the fire Mullin band wagon for a week. Inconsistent play falls on the coach.
Does anybody really think he's going to turn this program around? C'mon, getting dominated at home to DePaul, G'town, and Providence is inexcusable.

I really hope he resigns at the end of the year and allows Cragg to hire a real coach.

Sitting on a train waiting to go home and I just could not wait until then to post. This is without a doubt THE most frustrating St. John’s team I have ever seen. How they could come out this flat against a 3-7 team, at home, after winning a huge game on the road against a top 10 team, is beyond belief. And please. Don’t tell me it was because we missed Heron. We did. But this team has enough talent to overcome that against a team like Providence.

At what point, and I sincerely am asking this question because I really don’t know, does a coaching staff take responsibility for a team coming out so flat the way our guys did? I get that the coaches aren’t executing on the court but how much true influence do they have on a team’s mental preparedness? This seems to happen too often with us. One step forward and then two steps back. Maddening.

I love this board. When we play great against Marquette, everyone is in love with this team. Then we lay an egg against Providence and, all of a sudden, we're terrible, we suck, etc.

Like my golf game, this team is consistently inconsistent. We laid an egg today, pure and simple. No energy, poor effort. No excuses. Apparently, we don't have any leaders that can push the button to get these guys to play. Maybe they need to have a players only meeting before every game.

The one shining light was the play of Roberts. He played with energy and enthusiasm and made a nice contribution. I only wish that he and Williams had been given more playing time during the non conference schedule so that they would be better prepared to contribute during the league season.

This is clearly a Jekyll and Hyde team. It wouldn't shock me at all if we came out flying Tuesday night against Butler at CA.
We are new that ,think coach and Mitch are just getting a pay check enough about the talent of this team.On to next yr.team not not desrve to mention NCAA Torney their only shot is winning big east and 500-1
. We can probably tone down the talent on this Team refrain ... it’s not happening .. need more Basketball players and less Athletes ... 3 point shooting today was awful .. Other than Ponds , occasionally Trimble, Heron when he is able to play we don’t have the spot up shooters that nearly all other BE teams have . Clark has mailed it in the last couple of weeks . Why ? He looks uninspired ? Maybe , like Owens , thinks he should shoot 15 times a game ? He gave nothing today .

Gotta wonder, based on how Heron looked, if the injury is not a serious one. Not an excuse, but that would explain why the team came out flat. Would be a huge blow.

You're right, they are a Jekyll and Hyde team, but I've never been in love with this group. This was the exact same game as G'town. There was zero hustle and intensity in the 1st half. They played like a team that thinks they can just turn it on later in the game.

I want these guys to be confident when they get out on the floor, but I also want them to realize that they are not Duke. They can't just flip a switch and make things happen. If they scratch and claw for 40 minutes, they are going to win more than they lose. But this group of guys just don't bring it every game. After a game like Marquette, these guys should've wanted to run through a wall. And now? Back to square one. As I continually say, that is 100% on Chris Mullin. Why can't he get his guys to play an entire game?

Days like today I live the board because all you guys saw what we saw. We got disgustingly bitchslapped.

I’ve mailed the season in.
Shame on me.
“But the team did first, brother!
Honest!”
8-10 in BEC at best.
We beat Butler Tuesday.
Typical.
No way we beat Nova.
@Prov is a loss.
We lose to the Hall because Willard will have his team prepared and they have our number.
@DePaul is also a loss.
This team couldn’t beat St. Mary’s High School, Anywhere USA, consistently.
Pathetic effort.
Stunning Loss.
Hope Mustapha heals...for his sake...not ours.
We do not deserve it.

This team is in many ways more frustrating to watch than some of the much worse Mullin teams because they are so talented yet fail to bring it every other game it seems. As bad as his first year team was and with last year's team post Lovett, the effort was always there. Opposing coach after opposing coach talks about how talented this SJU team is, how tough to guard etc. yet we are below .500 in league play and may not even make the tournament.
Based on performance to date, it is hard to see this team going on 2 or 3 game run in either BE or NCAA tourney as we can't seem to put together three good games in a row (put together stretches of four good games in a row at start of BE play but had long second half lulls against Hall & Nova). We'll see but we better bring it against Butler. Hope Coach read them the riot act in the locker room.

As far as the refs are concerned we can’t blame them anymore for the lack of quality play by this team. Offensive aggression and teams that attack the rim will draw more fouls which is what happens to us because we have no rim protector. Offensively we pass the ball around the three point line trying for an open three point shot so we don’t draw as many fouls playing that game. You’re not going to draw fouls coming down and jacking up a three 5 seconds into the shot clock. Teams that emphasize the three point shot have Varied results depending on whether or not they are making their shots. It is extremely difficult to stay hot from three game in and game out unless you are the Golden State Warriors. That leads to our inconsistency. We don’t get to the foul line enough to score some easy points to negate when we are not shooting well.

Mark, completely agree with most of what you said. There was a lot to like about the wins at Creighton and Marquette. BUT, how can the completely listless, almost disinterested "effort" of today be explained? This shouldn't be about "well it happens". Twenty year old kids and everything right in front of them and.....this. Maddeningly, frustrating.

I am not calling myself a visionary by any means but I knew we were losing this game today. In my opinion Mullin is running a country club and that culture needs to change immediately. This is coaching and nothing more, and it kills me to sat that!

When the team bus rolled back into Queens, I'd let the guys know they'll be running wind sprints on the lacrosse field. Inexcusable effort once again by this group. Josh Roberts was the only one who looked interesting in hustling today.

Jack called it...huge letdown after looking like we turned corner again. This is why we need to stop talking about making runs...we can’t. We fight for our lives just to get to .500 and can’t stay there. Heron thing is shady and bruises aren’t reason not to play. Clark has been awful and the refs hate Mullin so we never get home cooking. Maddening team to watch.
You really are a jackass. Heron could barely walk.
Nothing posted anywhere about his knee specifically and didn’t see him. Watch your language.

"My back hurts" can't play, Ponds, we lose. I scrape my knee , never came out as a kid. Huron ,the pro scouts , will have the same thoughts as me. Your injury deflated the team from the start. It is a game driven by emotion and momentum until our team figures that out ,we as alumni and fans will be disappointed.

Down 46-45 at home in second half & allowing 24-11 run by PC says a lot re inconsistency of Johnnies.

No not everyone was loving this team,it like riding a 3 wheel bike with one wheel is not working. We have had 4yrs to get a 3rd wheel (like a big east center who could get us 8-10 rebounds in 4o mins protect the rim block shots and provide us with min 1o- 12 pts per game .Will cheer this team on but let’s stop deceiving ourselves we are at best a middle of the pack team
