(POST-GAME) Marquette, Tues. Jan. 1, 7pm, FS1 / 970AM

here we go, bombs away,
I counted 1069 posts, where it was pointed out that this SJU season was to be all doom & gloom, since we had no backup big man. that was just in the first 7 1/2 days of july. here we are - " After 14 Straight Wins to start the season, #SJUBB moves to 13-1."
then there is the obligatory posts - that the team SJU just beat is not that good. #16 sucks, imagine how bad #17 is.
then there is the how a team with 4 guys playing 35 minutes or more could not possibly beat anyone posts.
stephens sucks.

Great win!

Really enjoyed being at CA tonight. One positive about having these games on campus is a true home court advantage. I imagine the recruits felt the energy and that can only help.

-Our defense was strong. Intense and very few lapses

-We did a good job managing our fouls. No ridiculous ones

-In addition to the good ball movement, whenever there was a mismatch, I noticed Simon, Ponds and Heron backing the defender down low. Even if they don't get the shot they want, this can provide us with an inside-out effect. I like it.

-When we were up by ten, we stomped on their throats and finished the deal. Sign of a good team.

-Greg Williams is coming. Enough said.
Great game and great medicine for StJ fans. My lasting memory of the game and Coach Carnesecca was his fist pump in support of the Johnnies on National TV with 20 seconds to go in the first half. I met the man first in 1959 and have hundreds of personal memories of him but this gesture of enthusiastic support in a very emotionally needed win night will be on top of my favorites.
Can someone who is smart at those things get that clip of the "pump" and reproduce it here. Those that missed the moment will be touched . He still breathes St, John's.
Jon Rothstein:

St. John's has the best roster in the Big East and it may not be close. The Red Storm roll Marquette by 20 in Jamaica. Quad 1 win. #SJUBB

Jeff Goodman:

It was Ponds in the first half, Heron came alive in the second half. St. John’s with a HUGE win at home against a ranked Marquette team. Showed a lot of maturity bouncing back after getting hosed by the refs at the end of the Seton Hall game. Most important win in Mullin Era.

Best thing is that our whole team is starting to find their role, both on offense and defense. Simon is showing up more and more now as that X-factor guy and defensive stopper. Heron looking less awkward in the lineup and finding his range both inside and out. Figueroa very balanced and has been from the start. Clark has found his range and keeps getting better. In addition, we have guys on the bench starting to be able to be relied on a bit. Greg Williams stepping up, Trimble serviceable on defense and can’t be left open on offense. Dixon maybe in a slight rut, but if he ramps up his defense that will all change. Having Keita back also huge for our depth and his size and fouls.

Looks like things the coming together. Need more efforts like tonight. Play with a chip like that every game.

The only red flag of the evening was Ponds experiencing pain in his leg near the end of the game. He seemed uncomfortable sitting on the bench with him holding his right leg in a stiff straightened position. Then after the final buzzer he was clearly limping while walking. Hopefully it isn't anything serious.
I saw when this happened. On the final timeout the team managers thought it was a 30 second timeout, when they realized it wasn’t they ran to get the stools and in that moment one of them ran into shamorie. Possibly banged knees. Probably just a small knock on Ponds

Fire the manager ASAP... probably a Seton Hall inside job... ;-).

Great news to wake up to! The only thing that would make this better is if someone told me that whiny former Duke player was crying on the sideline.

Just a took at peak at their board. Interestingly a lot of their fans thought SJU would win this one with quickness and shooting. Some picked us to blow them out.

Dickie V:

"A flat out A+ performance by St John's. Chris Mullin should be PROUD. They dominated a quality club in Marquette. Very impressive tonight".

Important big win. Nice to see the guys running on all cylinders. Need a little more form the bench, but tonight njot needed. Let's go kill Georgetown down there!

Wojo was extremely complimentary:

“They’re an outstanding team. … Offensively they’re a juggernaut,” said Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski, whose team had beaten three top-14 squads this season. “A lot has been made of what they’ve done up to this point. We’ve played at least a half dozen, ‘high-major, big-time teams,’ and they’re every bit as good, if not better, than the teams we’ve played.

Pretty high praise indeed. When we're making shots and sharing the ball, our first team is as good as about anyone. It is also great to see the guards continuing to rebound as they do. I also expect that Keita will continue to improve and become an important aspect to the rotation. But, it is good to see that blending him last night had no detrimental impact to the offensive efficiency. And, as he gets settled in, I think Heron and Clark will settle into their more natural roles as well. Looked pretty darn good last night.
